Howdy do! I thought it was fitting to do a little breakdown of Angeline the baker while I baked. Its becoming one of my favorite banjo songs to play these days, and I had a good time playing through it. If you're just here for the banjo content, you can skip to 4:30, otherwise, you can enjoy watching me struggling to bake the simplest of baked goods before banjo-ing.
I think the mic I plugged in actually made the audio quality worse than my phone mic. I'm trying to sort that out, but there are some really choppy audio sections in this vid, sorry about that.

Phoebe - you are such a delight to spend time with... We are so happy that you've been speaking with us lately - we feel like you are our friendly neighbor down the road who stops by to play tunes with us in the evening on the deck :) You are always welcome - especially if you're bringing along some sweet biscuits!

I’m 70, and my dad had a banjo custom made for me when I graduated high school. I spent many hours in the kitchen of the firehouse learning from the man that made the banjo. I haven’t picked it up for many years. This makes me want to get it out. I love your videos. They make me smile! ❤ 🪕

Well done! Banjo is best learned by ear. There are no useful banjo tabs. Traditional music is shared through the air. Like a virus. ❤

Having started before KZfaq, and before the internet was even a thing, before CD's, and not always having access to a turntable, and having no one around that played this music (except for a friend that I saw every couple of months or so), I have to say that the Miles Krassen and John Burke tab books were very useful. And someone here on KZfaq has gone and recorded a tab-faithful version of every single song in the Miles Krassen book, which is also very useful.

FWIW, I'd love more tutorial content. At least one other KZfaq banjoist I follow posts song videos and then usually will post a tutorial a few days later. You already do an amazing job with the performance videos and I think you'd do a great job on the tutorial videos as well. If they also involve baking, well that's just a bonus. As for me, I always banjo when I grill. :)

It was a fun video. I'm happy to see how you do some technics here and there. I actually got the idea to learn playing a banjo earlier this year, and your videos played a big part in it. Somehow I came to the wise decision to learn clawhammer, in the middle of Europe where almost nobody seen a banjo up close, and I'm pretty sure that nobody seen how to play clawhammer. I'm still in the very beginning because it's really hard to figure it out how to do it just by watching online videos, but getting there sooner or later :) I hope.

There's plenty of Europeans playing clawhammer. There's a German guy that has recorded all the tunes in the Miles Krassen Clawhammer book and posted them on KZfaq, there's a great Italian player, Andrea Verga, and a guy in the UK that goes by Banjo Dai ... and many more..those are just my favorites that I can think of right now. I realize it might be difficult to find someone local, but maybe you'll end up being that local guy 🙂

"I should probably learn to read tabs." As someone who reads tabs, we should all learn to play by ear. :) I read tabs fine and can read sheet music (at least on other instruments), but learning by ear remains a mystery to me and I think that holds me back in terms of the musicality of what I play. Don't get me wrong, tabs are a tremendous resource for teaching and learning, but the best traditional musicians usually learned by ear and later learned to put that into tab form for others.

You make me laugh Pheobe. Just getting the cinnamon roles out and on the sheet had me laughing. I like this entire video concept and I think you should put together a tune called "Don't Burn the House Down" as a tribute to the journey of making the YT videos. I'd love to see in future videos just little snippets here and there of how you got into playing music, how you learn a song or add to it, leading up to where you are now with the YT stuff. I never tried anything musical until around age 55 when I started playing the fiddle. I wanted to learn by ear, but my fiddle instructor had me learn reading music so now I'm a bit dependent on having sheet music to learn by. I too can't do tabular stuff. Well I need to go back to fiddling with Angeline. Don't forget to do the dishes. Thanks for making me laugh.

Superb content. Please produce more. I love how you shifted to the higher frets. I'm trying to learn some music theory as I learn to play tunes. I think shifting up the neck like that is called a chord inversion. The hammer on/pull off is cramming two notes into one quarter note's space, thus making them eighth notes (I think..) You and Margo MacSweeney are the only banjo players I watch full screen on my phone so that I can try to learn how you are playing. More, please!

I have found that when cooking, it is ok to trust your instincts, but baking is more like chemistry. I also like hearing your thought process on the banjo. it makes more sense to the guy who cant even spell 'theory' without spellcheck. Trust your instincts there as well.

Thank you, that was great! It was very helpful to see it slowed down, and see the fretboard. I am used to learning from watching people just break down how they play a song, so I don't miss the tab :) You explained everything very well. This is a fun tuning! I am mainly a guitar player, but my Dad gave me his old banjo a few years ago, and I have only ever played it in G. So it was great to break out of that box! I would definitely enjoy more videos like this. I'm glad that the baking went well :)

Upvoting before watching the video just for the moon pie shirt 😂 Ok edit: watched it, banjo technique tutorial starts at 5:06. Actual song around 14:08 . Cooking definitely not a primary focus here 😂. I think the tutorial might be a little difficult for just any beginner to follow but not bad idea - maybe separate the playing of the song into separate video.

I’d like to see a review on the banjo you’re playing; how much does it cost; the pros/cons etc. It has a really nice sound to it. I’m a total beginner and got a recording king banjo and I love it; but the top thumb string makes an annoying buzzing sound; I don’t know how to make it go away.
