Thank you and screw those people! Bakerfield is where most of my favorite stuff was based: Buck, Merle, Wynn Stewart, the Maddox Bros and Rose, etc. All those Okies and Texans were drawn to the area for work, and they brought their cowboy songs and fiddle music- Thank God they all met up in Bakersfield and accidently created the best music.

I grew up on the Hill, Lebec, just south of Bakersfield in the 60's and early 70's. I've seen or met most of these folks. I took guitar lessons From the Mosleys at the Mosrite Studio. You could drive around Bakersfield on a Saturday morning and watch all the new talent playing on flatbeds in store parking lots. There just never will be anything like it ever again. I'm a lucky man for having lived it.

My grandpa and grandma and my dad came from Meeker Oklahoma to Selma California which is about 15 miles south of Fresno and about 100 miles north of Bakersfield on 99 in the 50s and this is the music my dad listen to. He would tell us “this is Okie music“ 😆 (which is actually the truth ) and I thought that’s what it was called instead of Country music. so the story is the same there as it is in Bakersfield. I also had a cousin in Sacramento that had a country music newsletter. His name was Bucky and he interviewed all the country music acts that came into town. I also stayed in Pixley for a while and that’s where Roy Buchanan is from. Merle Haggard was always considered as a local boy that done good and was everybody’s favorite.

I grew up in Modesto. My daddy played an electric slide guitar and mama played whatever she wanted to. By ear. Chester Smith was my uncle by marriage. My world was all about music. They would 'sang' in Honkey Tonks. Mama wrote a song the Quaquin Singers recorded. We were emersed. The Maddox Bro. and Rose were local icons. When my mama, Judy Blevins, and my aunt Nikki Smith/French/Grass would go out and sing, they took us, toddlers. Put us to sleep in the the car parked in the back while they played. I vividly remember some of it. They sewed red dotted swiss dresses to wear when the played in Firebaugh. Those dresses were cut and made into dresses for my sister and I.

Excellent, thankyou. It’s one thing to read about Bakersfield and it’s music, it’s another to see the place itself on film - ultimately, going there would be my preferred choice….maybe one day. The Maddox family had such an enormous influence on musicians in and around California, it’s always puzzled me that they don’t get cited more with the resurgence of interest in this kind of music. I love Merle Haggard. ‘Okie’ always nonplussed me though; but as time has gone on, and having heard more anecdotes about his friendships with people like Willie Nelson - not to mention the sheer volume of pot that they smoked - I’ve come to the conclusion that Merle was being a little mischievous with the lyrical content of that particular song. Thanks again. Marc.

@@georgesanders5006 Wow. That sounds like an amazing collection. It’s a shame you had to sell them, but I understand. Cathy was my grandmother. My family has a number of copies of her North Pole Rock record, but they are rare. I spent $250 on one I found on Ebay a few years ago. It wound up being one of Global’s better known songs because it was used in so many Christmas compilations. We’re very proud of it and play it every Christmas. I also bought a copy of Henry’s LP with Tally a few years ago, but it wasn’t as expensive. I also have an original photo that they used for the front cover of the record sleeve for that LP.
