Good job , I am impressed at the steadynesss of your hand , breath control is a tough skill to learn as a young watchmaker , even tougher to maintain as a seventy three year old like me . I do have to take more breaks than I used to. One thing I do is to use a ruby or a sapphire for final polish and sizing. Once again thanks.

Thanks Larry, I also have more than 35 years of experience restoring old watches and clock movements. But last 20 years i have only worked with cross-support lathes, so I was afraid I have forgoten how to work on the t-rest. But, obviosly, it is like riding a bike...

Hi Luis, thanks for the good words! Yes, I still do such things... Actually, i did this video for a friend, who asked me how to repivot a balance staff. It was easier for me to show with a video rather than explaining. But, there is something important - it is much beter to turn entire new staff than repairing broken one. And, sometimes it is easier too. I made the video to show that it is possible to do and to show one way it can be done, and never intended to suggest this is the right way for solving the problem... But I see now that people get me wrong...

I noticed your steel cut pretty easily. Did you re-temper the pivot after you finished?
@nevenbekriev
@nevenbekriev 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, I did the pivot from a piece of guitar string. This steel is already hardened and tempered to proper for pivots hardness. No further thermal treatment is needed In Watchmaking usually steel must be hardened and tempered to blue priot to turning. After the part is ready, no thermal treatment is aplied. Hardened steel is easier to turn then soft steel - it will not bend and will give good and smooth surface. But You need tunsten carbide cutters...

Hi - loved your video, it has given me direction. What diameter was the pivot wire (guitar sting) as I need to repivot a balance staff?
@nevenbekriev
@nevenbekriev Жыл бұрын
Hi Chriss, The diam of the guitar string and the drill bit in this video is 0.25mm. Actually this way of repivoting is good for train and 'scape wheels, but is not that good for balances. I did the wideo as a friend asked me how to repivot a balance staff, and it was easier for me to show than to explain it in language, that is not native to me... The best way to solve the problem is to turn a new staff on the lathe, it will take (to a skilled man) practically the same time like the repivoting of the brokem one.
