This week we invite a couple of experts in balanced power, Joe Salvatto, and Michael Beinhorn, to discuss an often overlooked subject that can greatly impact the final product when it comes to recording, mixing, and producing records.
In simple terms, balanced power is a process that eliminates noise or distortion from incoming electrical current. Before the initial signal hits your devices and equipment for power, balanced power ensures you have the cleanest, most pure power by affecting the current itself. Balanced power is not conditioning power or adding “EQ-ing” to remove noise or interference, rather, balanced power eliminates that noise before you ever hear or notice it.
Equi=Tech has pioneered balanced power since the early 1990’s.

Hate to break in here, but... Cold water pipe grounding is illegal in the US, National Electrical Code sections 250.130(C)(1) and 250.52(A)(1). Although the NEC allows a few other options [section 250.130(C)], the best place to connect a ground is on the ground bus of the panel where the circuit is connected to its breaker. Not commenting on the efficacy of balanced power here, but I feel compelled to mention power ground since, while cold water pipe was once legal, due to PVC fittings, no longer, though I believe it's still legal in the UK (clearly labeled!).

Are there any sound comparisons between this Magic Box and a clean, unaltered signal? Or is it just cheap, paid small talk?❤

Had the same thought. I found a test with and oscilloscope that was compelling. I’ll try and post.

My mastering engineer gave his box to a friend when he moved. The next mix he got from his friend was drastically different for the better and the only difference was the equi tech

Wow! Shots fired! While Equi=tech were the pioneers in 120v balanced power, Furman has been in the balanced power market as well as some other lesser known names for some time. All it really does is supply 120v as 2 60v leg instead of a 120v leg and a neutral leg. Split phase comes into a typical US home as 2 120v leg. Use both of them instead of a neutral and viola!, you're using balanced power straight from the power pole as 240v. Your larger appliances may be running off 240v in the home. I have no dog in this race, just adding some clarity. Equi=tech didn't do themselves any favors by coming on a little strong in 90's with their marketing.

The statements about Furman are untrue and misleading, whether or not you have a “dog in this race”. We have the court records to back up a copyright infringement case that went on for years. It was Martin Glasband who approached the NEC board on two separate occasions in order to allow the commercial sales of balanced power technology (for which he held six patents) and successfully have it adopted into the code book. He did EVERYONE a favor.

@@jglasband Cranky much? I'm trying to help you here. What is untrue? Furman makes a competitive balanced power product. I'm not speaking to whether it's superior or inferior to Equi=Tech's products. This only lends credance to the concept. Personally, I don't speak to the efficacy of balanced power, because it's not on my radar. If it makes you feel better about yourself, then I'll repeat, Equi=Tech are the pioneers in balanced power.

Not cranky…just setting the record straight on behalf of my brother who is no longer alive to defend his work.

@@jglasband It exists! I'm not knocking it. You seem to have me confused with globusglobus1540. Take your battle there.
