I went to school just off Soho Road for eight years, and had to wait on Soho Road to catch the bus home. It was alright if you were in a group, but very sketchy if you were alone. I was mugged three times, and a gang of youths chased my friends and I with sticks once just for being white. My best friend lives in Lozells, so we sometimes used to walk along Soho Road together. People used to heckle us as we walked by, sometimes leaning out of their cars as they drove past, to yell "coconut" at him (brown on the outside, white on the inside) for hanging around with white kids. These were not just other kids, they were often adults, and it was quite frightening. I went there not so long ago to visit a nearby business, and people were yelling at me out of their cars as they drove past. One group drove up to me and asked if I wanted to buy drugs. I appreciate what you are trying to do, and the business owners you interviewed seemed like decent people, but Soho Road is not a nice place. Maybe it's a different experience if you're not white.

I am a former Birmingham resident and sometimes visited the Soho Road and have purchased Barfi other Foods and Arts. But crime figures do not lie. If you live somewhere you become acclimatised to your surroundings and see those activities as normal. I know it is a dangerous area at night and remember hearing back in the 1990s from the Police saying to make sure you keep your car doors locked while driving through and gang crime is rife in the greater Handsworth area also around their is a proliferation of HMOs with assisted living and all the associated problems they bring. I am not saying its one of the worst roads in the UK but I would like to hear your views on what the worst roads in the UK are ?

Best cities UK - Liverpool, Glasgow, London. Worst cities UK - Bristol, Sheffield, Birmingham

Lots of memories of this place growing up. Memories that are set in stone, how life changes and we forget where we came from.

I would not take B&B opinion seriously! We all have opinions, and he could have said more offensive comments. Truth-be-told there are many areas in Birmingham which are deprived, poverty-striken and run-down. Soho road is definitely one of those areas. Yes it may have some nice indian shops, but it has gotten much worse in the last 30-40 years or so. Soho road used to be one of the main indian streets in the UK, but given the huge influx of Asians, its appeal is not the same as it used to be, the same as southall where these areas as mentioned have increased considerably in crime. I myself would not want to live there and for most people. I think only certain generational indians/south asians would live in Soho road, or new immigrants who do not want to assimilate. If you are offended by a youtubers comment, good you didnt experience the UK in the 1960s till 1980s where racism existed and was the norm, much more than the 2000s. It's called 'entertainment' I know a huge percentage of the shop / business owners don't actually live in the area themselves as their wealth has allowed them to live in leafier more affluent posher suburbs. Let's not kid ourselves Soho rd and the wider area of Handsworth has it's fair share of problems. The independent businesses are not the cheapest or best value for money and there is a lot of social issues with drug abuse/ poverty.

That location is not "far away" from soho road. Its at the top end of the soho road and the area at the start is just off the soho road with all the rubbish on the floor....actually.

There are more videos out there featuring the Soho Road. From Backpacker Ben, Wendall, Joe Fish and Going Globull to name a few all giving their own insight. The strength of the Soho Road and what it specifically shares with the North Laines in Brighton is the huge range of independent businesses. North Laines is seen as one of the best shopping in the UK. Not just for diversity but inclusivity. Could Birmingham Pride travel down Soho Road ???? Just today I was shopping in North Laines and an independent cake shop had a window display with cookies decorated with Eid Mubarak. Encompassing all communities.
