Imagine, for a second being an ancient heretic astartes, who was there all the way from the heresy to 42nd millenia, has fought in countless campaigns and raids, seen hundreds of chaos lords raise and fall, only to die to normal human using a plasma weapon whom you disregarded as just a mere mortal during what you considered a mere skirmish

During dark imperium, my friend and I split a starter set with primaris and death guard, we glued them together and left them unpainted, grabbed a couple of books, rulers and various things to use as cover. I played death guard while my friend got to use the primaris marines. He moved his hellblaster squad up first and overcharged his captains plasma weapon.... it blew up, killing the captain there and then. To this day I will not get over the fact that his first death and kill in 40k was his own captain.

Plasma is perfectly safe to use on overcharge, just inform you nearest Captain before firing so he may administrate the proper safety rites.... by shouting the plasma into behaving. What I imagine the re-roll 1 aura from Marine Captains to entail.... not a metaphor he just yells at it and the plasma is like "Sir, yes Sir!!"

Usually when the imperial guard have to face the astartes, something like THIS is involved... ends with a crater down range and a crater from where the shots were fired.

Death comes in many forms in 40k, as with plasma weapons "misery loves company" always comes to mind.

Firing a plasma weapon on overcharge it's basically like a game of Russian Roulette you'll either miss the target incinerated or it'll go off in your hands like a 25 pound bomb

Plasma weapons offer an interesting look into the psyches of the races. It is in my opinion a bit of an eaqualizer on the battlefield. Sure it risks turning the gunner into "the light in his squadmates lives" but those glowing orbs are eaqually lethal to unagumented humans, Aeldari, Ogryns, all the species of the Tau,Greenskinz, most smaller forms of bugs, Necrons and even the Astartes.

I was in the middle of painting a chaos marine with a plasma gun when this popped up in my feed... Praise slaanesh.

A Spacemarine with a boltpistol or even a bolter is surprisingly light on "stopping power". Other Marines, armored vehicles or the many, many armored enemies in the fare future can take a lot of bolts! But a Plasma-pistol is just the thing to up your game. Or a Volkite Serpenta, it you can find one.

I've always been more partial to that other mainstay of Imperial energy weapon tech, the Vape gun. Noone ever calls a melta that of course, but it's still listed as one of the official nicknames. The bio-plasma of the Tyranids is another mystery, they even manage to cram this mode of attack into something as small as a gargoyle without significantly affecting their proclivity to explode.

I will be using "whoop mode" from now on in my games. That's the perfect way to describe it. You just tack on an "s" at the end if you roll a 1.

I am about to utter some heresy I think on a channel such as this BUT I do not play this game, however that being said. I do so enjoy the exquisite story telling and the passion with which it is told. The story, the STORY gentle listeners is truly where the heart lies. Ah my prefer ranged weapon that can destroy my enemies with great effectiveness, though considering the inherent dangers many are right in not using these weapons. Plasma weapons are needed across the Imperium military, they are powerful weapons that when used properly they can win entire wars and battles, and no matter these weapons will be held in high regard.

I love 40k plasma weapons I feel like they are pretty realistic in terms of how they work and how dangerous they can be. Most Scfi worlds plasma is just another weapon to be used and its fully understood. In 40k it’s a powerful weapon but an ancient one and barely understood so a though using them can turn the tide they are just as likely to kill you as save you from an enemy. I don't care what anyone else has to say on Overcharge. A Plasma Gun-toting band of Ravenwings sacrificed the last of their squad with it just to win me my first game - from that day onwards, I was a true believer. About that battle: Ork field generator destroyed, decisive Dark Angels victory.

Have to admit I've always had a soft spot for plasma weapons. My first Death Guard Plague Marine I'm working on now has a plasma pistol.

Look!!! It's Erasmus Pattern Plasma Cannon MK I on thumbnail from Eternal Crusade. Even though I'm solely and foremost Devastator player must say I never liked plasma cannons although they are very effective and deadly in the hands of skilled user which I'm not. I'll take melta cannon over it anytime ofc. My choice of weapon is Requiem Heavy Bolter, more than 1500 hours invested in game and just 25 euros, played the game since it came out in 2016., took a break from it until some year ago. Was playing my first ever Rogue Trader game. First combat, first session after a lengthy character creation with lots of backstory planning with GM. First roll of the dice. My plasma pistol overheats and explodes in my hands, killing my fragile ass. Moral of the story: glass cannons do NOT work in Rogue Trader. Or 40k in general, I guess.

I love how lore-packed warhammer actually is, every part of this universe has even just a sentence of lore and I think it's absolutely fantastic. The amount of time and thought put into it all is just brilliant.

On your point about tournament play, I consider it the most "fair" way to play as the tournament documents and rules set the expectations before the games. When playing a game with luck, often mitigating that variance (without cheating obviously) and knowing your odds is important. Of course balance in an asymmetrical game like warhammer will never be great, and warhammer lies on a far end of the scale with regards to variance. Understanding that is one of the most important steps to having a healthy mindset and fun with a tournament

I love guardsmen stories, they are my favorite. Plasma weapons have been a huge part of my 40K experience from my humble guardsmen to my awesome Dark Angles Hellblasters.

The Imperium's plasma guns are basically the sci-fi equivalent of medieval iron cannons with their mutual tendency to distribute themselves and their gunnery crews across the battlefield.
