I recently transcribed the will & testament of Elizabeth Mayes of Baldock, from 26 December 1730. She names many persons and places in and about Baldock. A lengthy will & testament record for the time. Elizabeth Mayes was married at least twice, and she names her sister Anne Hilton who is named in Hertfordshire Archives, Poor index: from St Martin, London to Baldock, "Ann Hilton", 3 January 1704. Also mentioned, "The King's Head" on Hitchin street. I posted the transcription to Family Search website, I was originally looking for "Hewes" of Royston. Whereby I became an investigator of who was who about Royston, Baldock, etc., from about 1600 to 1730s or 40s.

I live in Baldock. You missed out some of the pubs….The Orange Tree, Hen & Chickens and the George VI. It looked quiet for a Sunday? Inside the church are banners from the Christian crusades as the area was owned by the Knights Templars. There has been settlements in Baldock before the Romans came to town as there is a natural spring, Ivel Spring, close to the station. Thanks for putting the town on the map.
