I played EA early on an took a break from it for a long time, but came back and played again when Bard got released. One thing that I really appreciate is how many different ways you can do the same quests and the different dialogue etc that was created for that. It can really make every playthrough slightly different depending on how you handle each situation. It really gets tiring though only having a level cap of 4, it would have really boosted the game if it had even been upped to 5 just to give people a taste of the fun to come - Fireball, extra attack - maybe next patch? I think it's looking great though, hope it releases early next year

Level 5 is the best level in D&D 5e. You finally feel powerful, unless you've been multiclassing. Leaving it out of EA was a mistake, IMO. Not just for the fun factor, but all those level 3* spells should be playtested too. *to anyone who's never played D&D: You get level 3 spells at level 5. D&D is stupid that way.
@Dark3nedDragon
@Dark3nedDragon Жыл бұрын
@@matthuck378 You're probably going to be capped at level 4 in Act 1, at least for almost all of it. Whether literally capped with a 'max xp reached' pop up, or most likely the XP gain from 4 to 5 being so insane in Act 1 that it is functionally impossible, but with quests early in the next Act that will shoot you up to 5 quickly. They designed all of the content around 4, not 5.

I would love to be able to gain more levels even if there is no benefit to it. The characters are powerful enough, I don't need to gain more abilities, it just feels SO bad reaching level cap so early and then playing on for hours more gaining no xp.

I simply don't expect the missing races to be added in EA at this point. If I had to take a bet I'd say we are are getting a "class patch" before Christmas holidays, then they'll attempt to do a "focused sprint" for the last stretch of development with no more EA updates, trying to get it done for a proper release by late spring.
@scalpingsnake
@scalpingsnake Жыл бұрын
Depends on how long they are willing to wait. They technically could release it in Q3 next year without even technically delaying it. But there is so much we simply don't know. It very well could be they expected it to go quicker than it has so are simply not wasting time putting things into EA that don't really need testing. My guess is spring yeah with the latest being June (no idea how against a summer update they are though). In terms of what we need to see: Monk, Paladin, improved reaction system and multiclassing. I do wonder if multiclassing will make it or if they save that for release.
@TucoBenedicto
@TucoBenedicto Жыл бұрын
@@scalpingsnake Yeah, sure, it depends on a lot of things. My guess is that they are TRYING to release the game as soon as possible, so ideally in the first half of 2023. They already sounded more than disappointed enough to not be able to achieve a 2022 release and in February 2022 their public statement was "We expect to have another year of development ahead of us".
@VesiustheBoneCruncher
@VesiustheBoneCruncher Жыл бұрын
We might get monk but I don’t think we’ll see Paly until launch. Most of it’s mechanics are tested elsewhere or unlikely to introduce bugs. It’s the hook to get people back for launch as the class is so obviously strong as the CRPG party ‘leader’ - big two handed, full plate and great at social? Yeah, leave that for launch. Same is true with the two remaining races. Half-orc Paly is a trope, and Dragonkin especially only going to midlevel gets that obvious Paly friendly stat boost. So yeah, they are keeping Paly back.

@@TucoBenedicto Yeah I absolutely take that as a year from when they said it but I do think it gives them an out to release it later too. I think we both realise at this rate with how often they are updating it's unlikely to be a feb release :/ Who knows maybe the next 2 patches are chonky though.

I genuinely don't think it will be coming first half of next year, and I don't think Larian wants to release it first half next year on purpose. First half is just packed with game releases, and I doubt they want what happened to Horizon: Forbidden West when Elden Ring came out to happen. They aren't going to want to release too close to Diablo 4, or Starfield for example. All the talk will be focused on those games (regardless of how people feel about Bethesda or Blizzard currently, the games are going to be major releases and dominate the attention of content creators, streamers etc.) and Larian seems to want BG3 to be something more than a niche game. They want it to be bigger than that, so pulling a Sony and releasing Horizon so close to major releases and losing the attention war would be disastrous, unless they truly feel like they can outcompete those other games, and I just don't think they can. I do think they are disappointed by not being able to release the game 2nd half of this year, because it has been a wide open field for anything RPG or RPG adjacent. I think they'll be kicking themselves for a long time for not being able to hit that time frame.

I forgot this game existed. I forgot this game existed like a year ago, and I’ll forget it existed again long before it’s released. Idk how much press it’ll get once it’s “finished” after all this time. Frankly, I expect that, if I ever play it, it’ll be because somebody mentions it like three years from now and I happen to be reminded when there’s a sale on. 🤷

I am 36 yr old, and i have to admit that i never ever played Baldur's gate series. It was right after i fell in love with D:OS's series so much, that i really wanted to play more games from Larian studios. And when i heard that they are making BG III, i started having interest in that game more and more. The absolut interest and desire to play BG III came to its peak after i've spent days in listetining their soundtrack for the game, which reminded me alot of the sweet soundtrack from D:OS 2. The soundtrack is fantastic and i could almost play the game in my head. So, what have i decided to do while waiting for the game? Well, here comes your beautiful channel, Mortismal. I watched your reviews of the BG's Enhanched Editions and... here i am, installed the first game and started to play it in order to get familiar to the story, when BG III finally comes out. I myself echo your concern about the "after act 1" of the game not being polished enough. Also I'd like to see/test out a reaction system before launch. Because many classes in 5e, such as the Bard, rely on abilities that use reaction to function. So a system that can use those abilities plus spells such as shield and other spells would be very welcome to test before launch. As the year has been very disappointing (to me) in regards to what has been added to the game I'm not hopeful they will add a decent enough reaction system to the game.

Two big things I am nervous about for BG3's full release (minor essay incoming): 1. Similar to what you mentioned, but more story focused- I'm worried that the next acts of the game are going to feel sparser or less compelling. DO2 felt like that to me, where the first area was so vast and had little secrets packed in every corner, and the rest of it felt less interesting to me. I'm really worried companion storylines might drop off or the plot becomes less tight-knit and compelling. 2. I'm a bit worried that the overall playtime is going to be significantly less than what I'd expect for a CRPG due to them insisting on doing all of the cutscenes, etc. Ties back to my first point- I feel worried that the EA of this game is a little too good to be true. I have this fear that the playtime after the EA section is going to be shorter. Ideally I would hope that it'd be twice the length of the EA playtime, but I am not sure if that's just shooting myself in the foot hoping for something like that. My worries are all completely founded on the fact that I LOVE what they have given us so far, so much that I suspect it might end up my all-time favorite CRPG by the end of things. I really love the companions, the visuals, the gameplay, and not to mention all of the little secrets and mechanics. A little gripe here, I'm not sure if it's unpopular: I really hate that they've focused so much on making all of the companions playable. I think it's a waste of resources. I think it's a cool idea, and I get that they did it before, but I and many others are not only totally fine with playing our own characters but most actually prefer it from my understanding. I get that it adds depth and replayability, but I think it's going to take away from them developing the friendships/romances/rivalries between the MC and their companions. I just remember back how in Dragon Age Inquisition, Bioware wasn't even going to have Cullen and Solas as romance options, but they added them later on because they had a little extra time. But due to that they were only able to make the romances extremely restricted based on MC race, which even though that bugged a lot of people, Cullen and Solas ended up two of the most popular romance options in the game. I'm just thinking that if even Bioware felt overextended doing the romances for that game, that Larian's gotta be feeling a little overwhelmed having to record/animate every single permutation of interactions between Gale+Astarion, Shadowheart+Gale, MC voice 1+ Laezel... etc etc I play CRPGs for the story, and in particular companions are a big draw to me, so I am very nervous about them being bungled post Early Access, because I suspect Larian has bitten off more than they can chew with this decision. And that's the end of my essay!
@tutes0133
@tutes0133 Жыл бұрын
These are very valid concerns and it's opened my eyes a little from the rose coloured glasses. Sidenote though: The Solas and Cullen romances were really good though. Solas felt so emotional especially during trespasser and Cullen was just really sweet. I felt a connection with him there

Completely agree with Larian’s insistence on making companions playable. I never felt like they were true companions even in DOS2. I haven't played early access at all. I am going to be waiting for release. My guess for the slower release of updates is that once they got the game closer to what they wanted it to be mechanically that they have been more focused on adding content primarily.

Love that when you talk to somebody you get a close up to the characters and NPCS. Make the game way more imersive and hope others big budget CRPGS copy this. im waiting for final release but is hard because BG3 looks phenomenal. Cant wait to play it.
@WikkeSchrandt
@WikkeSchrandt Жыл бұрын
It looks great, but it does require all NPCs/creatures to have really high quality meshes and textures. This isn't a priority for most CRPGs, as it chugs unnecessary resources and thus insanely increases system requirements, while most of the game will actually be played from an isometric perspective, where it's useless having such HQ models.

@@WikkeSchrandt it would only increase the size of the game. fps would mostly be unaffected
@WikkeSchrandt
@WikkeSchrandt Жыл бұрын
@@devsirmeb Sure, it would if you had a top notch system. Otherwise, things like 4K textures, meshes with loads of vertices, cloth physics and high-res shadows can cause massive drops on average and even high-end systems. The textures especially can be a bitch, as it's not a single texture. It's at least a diffuse, specular and a normal map for each model, perhaps environment maps for eyes and the like. That causes it to not have to load a single high-res texture per NPC, but several. But yes, it would also significantly increase the size.

This reminds me (in DOS 2) of the battle against freakin fire sludges and oil sludges while trying to save a dude, before the definitive edition that fight was kinda broke, the sludges kept spawning forever until ur pc explodes. I didn saved the dude back then and the sludges got into the town and slaughter everyonde in that region of the map (that became impossible to reach with so much fire, mobs and lag) XD

If you look at the general rates of how much of a game everyone actually gets through, MOST people that buy a game never even see the second half. It makes sense from a sales perspective to neglect the late stages, because a) you already have the money, and b) the people getting there are probably into it enough that they let some things slide.

I don't doubt when/if it releases BG3 definitive edition will be a great game if you like DOS2 (I do), but I'm afraid what the almost AAA budget/scope of this game will mean for the future of Larian, either : -it's a huge success and they run the risk of becoming another CDPR after witcher 3 -it's less of a success than expected and Larian taking a big financial hit, meaning having to lay off a ton of people and killing the passion of the devs

Quick question: How well does BG3 handle line of sight in combat? Asking because D:OS2 was incredibly, gamebreakingly bad handling LOS on 3D terrain leading to AI constantly trowing attacks through cover, ignoring smokescreens and hitting you in melee combat on a ledge 3 times their size. Is BG3 fixed in that regard or is LOS simply not a real factor in battle so that you ignore it anyway?
@scalpingsnake

Good question. I will say upfront I haven't played the game but I have watched quite a bit. I was looking out for it and I do recall when a barb was using a throwing axe it got blocked but there was a tree in the way and the targetter showed him. I think immediately BG3 will be better as DnD has movement AP separate to your main/bonus action unlike DOS where using 1 AP to move could literally prevent you from doing an extra attack. I would guess the other stuff will be better too. Right off the bat they made sure fire wasn't as... natural xD so I would assume much less clouds. I think the main issue in DOS is how easy clouds would spawn as a side effect instead of actually using a spell that creates one.
@Hrafnskald

Line of sight is ridiculuously easy to exploit in BG 3. You can stealth into and out of combat, to the point that Rogues are easier to play solo than with a party.

Well said. This is why I don't jump on day 1 for a new game. It generally helps to wait a few years after release for a "definitive edition" that tries to smooth out majority of the bugs and issues. I am glad you acknowledged the issues with DOS 1. Even DOS 2 seems to have a rough second half despite it being the definitive edition.

@@Thalaranthey Or they will just keep doing what they are doing knowing that people will buy the product regardless. No offense but RPGs have been around a long time and almost all of them suffer the same legacy issue. Its not just Larian. Tech might improve but devs generally end up using much of that improvement on graphics than function. Ever wonder why AI in FPS games are still so lame? Problem is we like to make a lot of noise on youtube and all but push comes to shove we always give in. We gave in to micro transactions and we gave into always online... I do understand why the updates get slower. The more the game gets developed the more content do they need to check/overhaul with every update. It also shows that they are pretty much done with the content that is available in early access so they develope and polish stuff in later chapters. I honestly would be more worried if they would still pump out EA update after update. That also gives me hope for the lategame. They probably learned from DoS 2 that they need to triplecheck everything without the early access tests.

Obviously they have, if DOS2 is a marker Act 1 was great and after awhile in EA progress was slow. Then when the game released we got Act 2 and that act was essentially perfect and much longer than Act 1. Like in the video the final act(Act 3) was a mess however and hopefully isn't the case with BG3. We only have the beginning of the game to mess around with, they still have who knows how many more acts to completely do without the testing of millions of players. It makes sense that the updates for the beginning of the game aren't as rampant.

They've definitely made more than they are showing. They were adamant that EA would only be act 1, so the bulk of their work on the rest of the game won't be in the EA aside from testing out mechanics changes.
