Many American/Canadian/British and EU digital nomads have left Thailand for Bali. They said they are offended by the Thai 90-day visa run, which makes them feel "unwelcome"! I think Bali's new tax-free, long term visa will attract millions of digital nomads and boost the Indonesian economy in no time.

We just got residency in Mexico and they did an iris scan. It broke my heart to do that to my children. We wanted residency to get rfc which is a tax number to pay less capital gains and less tax on air bnb. I don’t plan on being here long but I feel all this nwo over reach has given me ptsd. I know we need to renounce Canadian citizen ship and get another elsewhere and same for our corporation. I’m terrified I’m signing up for darker countries knowing it’s affecting future generations. If it’s based solely on money it would be easier.

Agreed. We've decided to hold back on immigrating to a European country and instead we're staying put where we are however the trade off is that we're in a high crime country. For the moment, we can buy a little safety but it's so tough to know what the right thing is to do for our kids.

As somebody who has been living in Mexico and Colombia since COVID first hit the US, Bali always sounded like a great place to work remotely barring those intense lockdown restrictions from recent years. The 12-odd hour time differential is something to consider too. I feel like you can get a lot of the similar lifestyle elements in Playa del Carmen or Tulum too without going halfway around the world.

Hi Andrew, this is not true. the 5 years digital nomad was introduced by Minister of Tourism (Sandiaga Uno) without any approval from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights / Directorate General of Immigration and Ministry of Manpower. The Minister of Tourism wants to make Bali more famous but there was no cooperation between those Ministries yet. There would be big complains from Indonesian people in case the 5 years digital nomad visa is applicable because many foreigners will work in Indonesia without using work permit & stay permit and it would against many Indonesian regulations. Sandiaga Uno was just appointed as Minister and he wants to make new policies but it would violates laws.

I refused to request a study ID number. I'm not a number, I'm human and I want to be treated like a human and not under a number like a slave. I am from the EU and only people suffering in concentration camps in World War II were numbered here! Because I did not have an ID, one of the US banks even refused to cash my check with a student scholarship issued by the US office. So this is democracy and human freedom in the unbureaucraticUS.

Indonesia has always been very strict in my opinion. If my understanding of their visa laws is correct then a foreigner can only be there for a total of 31 years. 2x3 for temporary residency and 5x5 for permanent residency. What happens if someone marries an Indonesian or has other ties there. Seems very one sided.

@christryst 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, relationships even with close geographical (e.g. Australia) and cultural neighbours (e.g. Malaysia) can be frosty to outright abrasive which really serves neither side. There should be far more cultural exchange - it's cheap and easy. Would be great to see closer ties in future. I agree the laws in Indonesia are far too strict for foreign investment and residence. It doesn't serve Indonesia.

@@christryst very true. I looked at their history as well and see why they do it but they can have things in place to keep their status intact. They can take some notes from the Philippines. At least there people can own condos and get a residence permit in different ways.

I think this is not going to happen. If Indonesia opens the possibility to allow foreigners to own lands, the locals won’t have chance to own anything. Indonesia needs to be “strict” to protect their own lands from foreigners. They are open to foreigners as tourists, but almost no way for foreigners to be more than foreigners there.
@jaws2003
@jaws2003 2 жыл бұрын
@@violafairy I understand this given their colonial past with the Dutch. Many places in Asia are like that. I still think if they took some notes from the Filipinos they would have more foreigners wanting to spend money there. I think maybe foreigners can have a Hak pakai(not sure if I spelled that right) title but it's still restrictive.

you CAN buy it but it's not freehold many if not most of the locals don't have it either you can always sell it back it's no big deal in fact many foreign entities don't have much problem with it on second thought rent is cheap moneywise and even for me as a local i'd prefer rented property rather than buying a property since it makes more sense businesswise 🙏🙏🙏 especially at our 7% p.a. deposit rate ! 🤑🤑🤑

You have to consider that a Presidential election is coming up. Announcements will be made by potential candidates jockying for position. But even if this becomes a reality, if it remaining will depend on who is successful in the elections. Not least as minorities including digital nomads will be blamed by some candidates for many of Indonesia's problems.
