It was a 700 bale day and my trusty Ford 4610 got a fuel line plug less than 200 bales into the day. When this happened, we had to call in the reinforcements-a neighbor’s 25 hp Kubota L2501. What ensued next was awesomeness and hilarity, all in one.

I have a Kubota L2501. When I first saw the caption,I thought I didn’t want to see someone abusing a tractor that badly. I grew up on a farm where we had dairy, beef, and hogs. I grew up baling hay. I have to say, I think the Kubota did very well. I agree with you. Just because you can do something with something, doesn’t mean that you should. Thanks for sharing this. Really enjoyed it.

I have to say that made a believer out of me in Kubota. Just this past weekend I got my F150 super crew with 6.5' bed and an 8,000 pound wood chipper stuck at a buddy's place. He got out his L2501 and pulled me right out (the truck was helping). That tractor has got to be producing a lot more power than Kubota is claiming.

As someone who stacked thousands of bales on wagons on the farm I grew up on: Ur doing that the hard way, deadlifting those bales straight up like that, using two guys, and handling the bales twice! You only need one guy on the wagon, get yourself a good hay hook for one hand, makes grabbing the bales off the chute and handling them much easier. No need to deadlift the bales vertically over your head to the top of each section of stacked hay; just use the hay bales as a stairs, start the next section on the floor of the wagon before you top off the first one, and then simply step on the first course of bales of the second section to make yourself taller and finishing the top of the first section is a snap! If you are short in height, you can even make a stairs out of the first and second courses of the second section, so that you only have to walk up the stack and put the higher bales in place. When we were going through the field, the side view of the wagon when it was half loaded looked like a stair case low at the front of the wagon and gradually going up towards the back. That way you only work hard to lift bales vertically at the end of the load - much less tiring when loading hay all day! Give it a try, I think you will find it much easier!!
@TheScientistHayFarmer
@TheScientistHayFarmer Жыл бұрын
I do thousands of bales each year too. The kids don’t like the stairs. I personally don’t like stairs either. It’s much easier and less effort for me to lift a bale up there than to step up while carrying the weight of the bale. The stairs are also slower. Sometimes I might leave one bale in front of the stack to stand on to help get the bale to the top of the stack but the repeated stepping up and stepping down while carrying weight is just making you do more work. And for heavy hay I need two or even three guys on the wagon otherwise I feed the hay too fast and one guy can’t keep up. The last thing I want is to slow down because a guy can’t keep up with the rate of baling. Good luck with one guy on a wagon when there’s 1200 squares to make and it’s 90 degrees out. The kids don’t like the hay hooks and I’m not really a fan either. If you lift a bale correctly no deadlifting is required to get it over your head. Lift it, kick it up with your knee to the undersides of your arms, and push up.

Well, it's the weight of the tractor that becomes more of a concern than the HP for baling. The Kubota just looks a little funny because farm tractors, generally, were build with more ground clearance for field work. Kubota's just are built more for hobby use and probably even were intentionally designed to fit in an automotive sized garage.

A few things to check on your 4610. 1- change the fuel filter. 2 - check the on/off valve on the fuel tank and be sure its not plugged, there should be a screen on top of it that can get plugged up. 3- check the fuel inlet line to the injection pump because im pretty sure there's a screen in there too. 4- check the air filter/ intake pipes for restrictions/obstruction.

@TheScientistHayFarmer Жыл бұрын
I would. I am not familiar with Kubota tractors though this experience has made me a believer. That being said, working a little tractor this hard regularly would probably cause premature wear, something you wouldn’t get on a larger tractor with more power, like a 3901. I’m afraid my video could have done a disservice. It shows it’s certainly possible to do this with a little 2501 (and the guy I borrowed it from square bales with it all the time) but my video might also imply it’s ok to do this, which I state at the end, at least in my opinion, I don’t think it’s very wise. If I were to add another tractor (which I’ll do someday) I really will consider something like a used 3901 at the smallest. That hydrostatic transmission was just so nice for square baling.

Sounds like the HP and particularly the torque were there, could have just used a bigger flywheel to even out the variability from the plunger. On a larger tractor, the larger engine flywheel accomplishes this, but if you wanted to bale regularly with a smaller machine, adding a bigger flywheel on the implement side would probably resolve. Also, don't forget while the tractor is 25hp, PTO is only about 20hp on the HST model, making this even more impressive. I have a vid on my channel showing how to up the hp/torque on the 1.6L engine in this machine. It's a sweetheart of a motor and little tractor.

Considering that self powered NH 273 is only 17HP. it doesn't take much to run the baler. I did some baling to test out the new used one with my B2410, worked effortlessly. It's the back and forth from the plunger that is not good for the little tractor, so yeah, not really something you want to do all the time with the 2501, which is just a tiny bit bigger than the B2410. I bet you had a bit of getting land legs back once you were done with the tractor going back and forth those 500 bales! LOL

It doesn’t take a lot of power to run the baler itself, no, but you still need additional power to move the baler and whatever you’re pulling behind the baler, such as a full wagon in my case. Additionally you need enough weight to the tractor, especially if you do any kind of hills, in order to keep the baler from controlling you. I do bale one hillside field that is fairly terrifying to bale with a wagon. Even my 63 hp Ford was using all it could to get the baler and a full wagon to the top of the hill while baling.

I’m not exactly sure what you’re trying to say here, but custom baling is simply baling somebody’s hay for them, usually for a fee. If you own property and you pay me to come bale it up for you, that’s custom baling. It has nothing to do with whether or not you’re treating hay with preservative. Hay only needs preservative if hay is being baled too wet, and the preservative accelerates rusting on the baler.

Need more horsepower with bale kicker, throw bale to back wagon. Wait for kicker belts get upto speed before start baling. Great see square baling with "Sperry Newholland" baler!

The amish put small motors on there bailer they work fine

Baler itself doesn’t require a lot of power. A small motor on the baler to power it is a lot different than also having to power your tractor, pull the baler, as well as a wagon load of hay behind baler.

Just wait till all that shoves you down a hill, just because it can pull it, dont mean it should, that baler weighs what that tractor does, then you add a few thousand pounds of hay make for a disaster
