It's HOT and DRY! What better time to go out and square bale! The 1st crop hay is ready to bale, and our newer seeding looks so nice, Alan, decided to square bale it. Paul went out with the 820 John Deere and the V Rake and by 1pm they were hooking up the Farmall 560 and New Idea 551 Square Baler. Now, because it's so hot, we decided to wait until it was cooler out to unload the wagons and put them up in the hay loft. The issue with that is we don't have enough hay baskets to hold all the hay and if we dumped the hay in front of the barn, well...the cows would eat it instead of going in to get milked. Alan's solution was to stack hay on one of the flat racks first and the rest would fit in the hay baskets. It was a great plan, until the Square Baler broke. It wasn't going to be a quick fix, so Alan decided to just round bale the hay instead. Our main Round Baler, the New Holland 853, had a cylinder being repaired, so we had to use our International Round Baler that we usually use for baleage bales. We put the 830 Case on the Round Baler and off we went. We got 3 fields baled in 2 days. The kids went to cool off in the Kettle River behind the farm, and we got our massive load of square bales up into the barn. Now, we are praying for rain, for us and everyone else who needs it!

Love watching your videos. Brings back so many good memories of growing up on a small dairy. Baling hay in summer, loading wagons, unloading wagons by hand. Working the hay mow was the worst. Hot, humid and always covered in itchy chaff while stacking bales. . Did you head down to the river for a quick dip to wash the chaff off? Boy we sure did. Kids playing in the river.... brought back more memories of taking a dip in a swimming hole in the five mile creek on a hot summer day. Sure do miss those days back in a much simpler time. Glad to see there are still a few pockets of those simpler times left in this now complicated world. You are helping your kids make beautiful memories they will carry with them their whole lives.

The stress of finding enough labor to handle small squares got me to switch to round bales. Even when I still had my 2 story tie stall barn......in winter I would set a round bale( flat side down ) outside the barn.........cut it into sections with my chainsaw.....drag the hay into the mangers. The only thing I used my hay mow for was for small squares of straw. A round baler that baled tight bales was a necessity for using the chain saw .
