In the Balkans the schooling system and school in general greatly differs to that of the rest of Europe and the US. Plenty of school pranks and shenanigans happen on the daily. In this video we cover some of the most popular.

Something you forgot to mention is the out-of-control bullying of weak kids. People in the US think bullying there is a problem, they have no idea how bad it is in the Balkans. If you're a nerdy, shy, awkward, eccentric and/or antisocial kid and you go to one of the lower-tier high schools that are more akin to prisons than schools, you're lucky to make it out of there without being emotionally scarred for life. They'll humiliate and pummel you all day right there in the classroom, and the teachers completely don't care, neither does the principal.

When the school provided us with newspapers to read, we turned them into heavy artillery and the fight became even more frenzied. When the teachers had enough and told our parents not to package the food in tinfoil, we had roughly two weeks of cease fire then the "bullets" began flying again. The teachers confiscated soo many pack of cards from us that in the end we crafted our own deck from torn out notebook pages. Ahh... I Miss those times...

Having lived in Bosnia, post war, this brings a lot of memories. Our school had 2 sets of each grades from 1-5. Each school year you had a rival class which caused chaos. I know that during the winter months we had snowball fights outside. Once inside of the classrooms, we would continue this by throwing chunks of coal at each other. My school did not even have central gas heating, but it did have old coal burners. I remember when we ripped the doors off of the hinges as we were pulling on the doors of the rival classroom, playing tug of war. It was a shit show trying to escape back into our classroom, at which point the other class ripped our doors off. Our teacher was in tears a lot of the time, I felt bad for her later on as she was an older educated woman. I remember that right after the war she did not receive her regular pay, and she would be paid in fucking sacks of flour, kilos of sugar, oil and other necessities. I'll never be able to explain this period of my life to my western friends. This video brought back a lot of memories.

Greek here. Our Balkan schools might look like shambles, old, terrible aesthetic and broken things, but i only have good memories from it. Some things I remember are smoking, even in class, random students casually walking the isles and even entering classes and teachers having a fight with them trying to get them out. One time someone opened the door and left a stray dog in my class, all the students went crazy and it was pure chaos. Another time someone fell from the window of the first floor to the ground, stood up and walked away like nothing happened. And then there was Carnival time, when we would arrange some fiesta with a different theme, one year would be a wedding, the next a funeral and everyone would participate, even teachers. And of course the tallest of all boys would be dressed as the bride! Madness!

In Hungary, everyone was dreesed up as Hitler at school carnival. Everyone had weapons in classroom ( airguns, throwing knives...). It was soo good to go inside the school building and see somebody without a shirt running on the hallway while holding a long chain. You went into the classroom and saw A) exorcism B) gypsy kids throwing things at each other C) someone with a stolen motorbike doing donuts D) a student beating an other student to death with a fishing rod.

Greek student here. In Greece students basically have a tradition of shutting down the school forcefully on their own accord for a few days each year as a form of protest to the ministry of education. Now desks and doors and chairs are broken and so on, but one time during one of those instances a kid drove a car inside the main building, was pretty interesting...

We also shut down the school again when the train incident here in Greece happened earlier this year, not as protest of course, but to lose more lessons, although we didn't wreck the school surprisingly. Hungarian from Romania here. I remember high school, the fights and smoking and all that. But what mostly stuck with me is how everyone was playing cruce in the back (and cheating at it) so you could hear "minus trei, în p*zda mă-tii" during class. The professors could take away the cards, but they'd just go and buy news ones during the break. So the principal, in a breakdown just said in my class "why can't you instead play chess?". A proposition which the entire high school picked up, so from then on you'd have students bringing in chessboards. So within 24 hours you'd hear "șah-mat, în p*zda mă-tii" from the back of the class.

One more hungarian here, from the 90s. I'd like to add some, directors notes. If your school preexisted before the soviet collapse, it wasn't named after someone important, but instead it was called *number of similar schools in the country* + "th" + *purpose of training / goal profession* + "school", very convoluted. Other than the toilets, one very hot spot was the gym dressing room. I fondly remember spraying my name on the shower wall with body spray and lighting it on fire. Unrelated, not so fond of a memory is a teacher breaking my arm in an "disciplinary act", she wasn't fired btw, she got promoted. Accurate video, 10/10.

Hungarian here. Sharing some of my experiences, or even some I've heard from some friends who went to different schools. -School radio plays "Rostás Szabika" -A random washing machine spawned in the halls -The lever that was supposed to be pulled during a fire pulled itself due to bad engineering. -A random guy told the guards that he was a food delivery man delivering food to one of the students. They let him in. He proceeded to steal the food of 4th graders, and some wallets. -An everyday talk with the PE teacher includes, but not limited to: Favourite alcoholic drinks, legalization of weed, etc... -If a teacher wasn't one of your liking, feel free to tell him/her that her mother is a whore. Worst possible outcome for you will be guilt, which we all know you won't have. -Try to defend your friend from a psychotic 4th grader with a sharpened stick. -As stated in the video, if you feel generous, invite your teacher to a shot of pálinka, he/she'll appreciate it. -2 girls in your class, one is annoying and ugly, second has a moustache. -Going to school drunk/high. -Your school celebrating graduating students by a parade through the city on tractors. I could go on

let me add some random memories to this bueatiful list (still form Hungary) - PE = half of the girls are chatting in the changing room instead of actualy going to PE, half of the guys are nowhere to be found - during "PE" 2 guys poke their heads in the girls' changing room like in a cartoon holding an egg (that they presumably stole from the grocery store during "PE") asking the gariffiti girl for a marker - same 2 guys decorating the egg then proceeding to break the classroom wall's wooden covet thingie to use it as a slide to break the egg as they make strange noises - stealing an armchair from the trash outside, replacing your chair with it in the classroom and when the teacher notices acting like you don't understand what their problem is - getting so drunk on the school trip that you microwave a bag of chips and then try to get it out with your bare hands - also so drunk on the school trip that you accidentally learn how to put both your legs behind your head but then failing to do it when you sober up - slapping the teacher in middle school??? - during every break between classes, most of the boys blasting their favorite songs on the school's music player thingie (idk what you call it in English) in the hallways and dancing to it while actively blocking the way to the "cafeteria" making most of the other students afraid to go get their food - breaking into the school and sleeping on the mattresses in the PE classroom, getting a shitty coffee from the vending machine then drinking it on a chair in front of the school entrance as you wait for the teachers to arrive like this is your house this is all that came to my mind at the moment :D

Honestly, my Dutch school wasn't much more normal. - We once had the fire alarm go off and the teacher just expected us all to keep working (there was an actual fire BTW!) untill the fire department came and jelled at him and allowed us to get out. At that time we could already smell the smoke from the floor below us as it was pretty bad. - Teachers handed out smokes to students in the break in the schoolyard - During chemistry class, teacher once got a massive , and I mean massive, metal container, filled it with explosive gass, lit a burner under it, and let it explode for fun because it was as he said "cooler then the experiments in the book" which called for a smal container/less gas. Almost landed on my desk/head! But it was cool XD - Our sysadmin had a computer with 6 DVD burners that was used almost fulltime to mass produce illegal copies of ms office, photoshop, etc for students - The fruit machine we randomly got was so bad the bananas and other fresh fruit in it were literally frozen. If you got a banana, it broke in two once it fell out. For a year. And they wondered who no-one got fruit. - Significantly less funny, but there were so many students bringing knives into school and threatening others with it that they had to install metal detectors. Overall it was a pretty good school, and I enjoyed my school years, but it definitely had a lot of weird quirks!

I'm Romanian and almost 36 years old. Back in my day (man, I sound like an old fart) this is almost exactly how school was. The most memorable event happened when I was in 6th grade; all the trouble makers from my school (about half the boys) went to an "all out war" with the trouble makers from another school. Shit was so "epic" it took a full week of de deal with the aftermath. On the plus side, the teachers were good sports, no one from our school got into serious trouble......despite the "war" being pretty serious (injuries and all).

As a Greek person who is now giving Panhellenic exams and is about to be done with school once and for all, I can confirm this 100%. Not one day would go by without me and the boys wrecking havoc all over the building. We would throw chairs and desks around (even break some of them), start fires, troll the teachers, give haircuts in the toilets, and so much more. Even though I, much like everyone, hate school with all my heart, I admit that I'll miss all the times we'd cause chaos. We had a good run.
