Some years ago I had a foreign student from Albania and I praised her people for being known as the best drug smugglers in the world. She took the compliment (it was intended as such) as a compliment and responded in kind, telling me that we, the Bulgarians were famous for being the best car stealers. Frankly I was flattered, I knew we were good but I didn't know we were famous for being the best. We both felt warm and Balkany inside after this exchange. PS. For a VERY long time I actually thought that "shipter" meant "albanian drug smuggler" and not simply an "albanian". I had ALWAYS heard "shipter" in the context of drug smuggling.

thats rather an old 90ties stereotype from Germany about the Polish, because right after the unification most cars were stolen by some polish criminal gangs (sometimes in cooperation with criminals from other countries from the east'/balcan which over time then took over this business and nowadays Polish ppl are not seen anymore like that). The stereotype about Polish is now gone. The Romanians (meant were indeed rather Gypsies - who turned later due to political correctness to Sinti and Roma) were (and are often still) not seen as car thefts but rather as general thefts/doing crimes (often by instructing children to pickpock) while living overcrowded on social welfare and making everything messy - if not playing music in the metro or buglaring.

@@publicminx it's just more banter ig. My grandpa's been using this joke for romanians since he can remember. It's the same as Montenegrins being super lazy and Serbs being full of themselves. And I can confirm the stuff about gypsies being all pretty much true. As "protected" as they are from the EU they are quite a nuisance in public spaces sometimes. I've had my phone stolen openly on knife point and caught some kids slashing our family's car's tires. They also frequently make a mess out of the recycling stations when looking for clothes.

A story from my military service here in Serbia. An ethnic Hungarian, who didn't speak Serbian very well, went home for the weekend. When he came back we asked him how it was. He said it was great, and that he met a girl. When asked what was that girl like, as the Hungarian language has no grammatical genders he mistook the pronouns in Serbian, and added "Great, I fucked him". The whole dorm fell to the floor laughing.

I'm a bulgarian and love Bulgaria and our people, mostly. I have been in Romania twice and can say that I don't like Romania as a territory, don't like the buildings and overall nothing, but the people were something else. One time, when I was 20, I was running to catch the bus in Bucharest and fell, I missed the bus, so I stood up and sat on a bench waiting for the next one. Seconds later elder people gathered around me and started talking to me. I didn't understand what they were saying, but they looked concerned and I could tell by their tone that they were asking me something. A man took a napkin out of his bag and handed it to me. I was confused and just stood there with the napkin in my hand and then they pointed at my knees. I was wearing a dress and my knees were bleeding from the fall, but for some reason I didn't feel pain yet and didn't know I was hurt. But the romanian people saw it and came to me to help. I will never forget this.

Our relations are unexplainable but you get the point. The reason for the rudeness is some people are really selfish and they care only about themselves not trusting everyone and that's why. Bulgarians are also one of the biggest materialists ever like wanting more than they need, even if they live better than some poor African countries or other 3rd World countries. We are still trying to unite the Macedonians with us however but they really refuse and want to stick with the Serbs and other Ex-Yugoslav members. Still, there are always those crazy bulgarian nationalists who claim the entire world belongs to Bulgaria ("Македония е Българска", "България на три морета"), or all our neighbours (Romania included) are secretly planning to take over our country and so on 🙄. I've heard stories of families who disowned their son/daughter for marrying a Romanian, Greek, or hell, even Croatian. Unfortunately, there is no getting rid of them anytime soon, which is really sad because I know we can be kind and friendly to our neighbouring countries. It’s crazy that not a lot of Serbians even know about it today. From my understanding it mostly happened because of Austrian-Hungarian empire playing good old devide and conquer. At the time serbian government was under influence of Austria-Hungarian empire(although nominally independent Serbia acted almost like a client state) and they saw it as Russia gaining influence in the region so they needed a proxy war to mix up things. If you're his friend, he will flat out call you an idiot if you're wrong. That pushes a lot of people away, but it takes an enormous amount of courage and love to not sugarcoat things and genuinely want to see your friends improve. In that way, he's the kindest person I know. Btw his main area of focus is evangelizing to the gypsies in Bulgaria; he said they absolutely deserve every bit of hate they get, but he loves them enough to want them elevated out of their laziness and theft and ignorance. Vampire just means Avar (Ubor/Obor) which was the name of Hungarians before the next dynasty changed it to Magyar. The word still exists in the Hungarian language and is pronounced “ember” today. It just means “human” and is a cognate of “Hebrew”, “Hombre”, “Umbrian” and “empire”. “Vampires” are just an ancient joke, slavs called Avars that because the OVERlords “sucked their blood” in the form of taxes and tribute payments.

As a Romanian, my experience in Bulgaria was very nice. A guy (a little crazy?) drove us (my girlfriend and I) for free around town, and told us if we put some money for gas (we didn't pay him until then) he will show us more of the area. We were for the first time in Bulgaria and this was for us ... wow! :) Also, in other year, different place in Bulgaria, I got stuck with my bike on a hill and I called the hostel to tell them I am stuck, and they sent a truck to pick me up. For 5 euro!? Some people try to "warn" me that Bulgarians are such and such... I repeat them my experiences. :) My experience in Hungary differ: in my first day in Budapest they were trying to cheat me when I was buying food, selling me the cheapest food for the price of some expensive food. When I showed them THEIR pictures of the food in THEIR menu, the lady become aggressive. So... yeah. If any people from any country read this: if you want people to think nice about your country, just take into consideration that maybe they are for the first time there - as in "first impression". For me, nobody will change my first impressions about Bulgaria and Hungary. Sorry. --- Also, I AM AMAZED how the seaside is developed in Bulgaria compared to our seaside. I almost didn't recognise Varna, 8 years apart! :)

My father-in-law, a proud Hungarian, got angry at me for saying Hungarians descend from Finugric peoples and are therefore related to the Finnish. He claims they are full-blood Huns and (in full seriousness) that they built the Great Wall of China. Slowly but surely, while integrating in this family, I start to replace my lexicon with a more Hungarian-approved one, to the point where Hungarian words come so automatically that I don't realise non-Hungarians don't understand them. A few days ago, I was telling a story to a non-Hungarian friend, when he stopped me to ask: "but this place Felvidék you're talking about, where in Hungary is that exactly?"

@@TeXinat0r more likely it's because a lot of expatriated albanians before going to the USA lived and worked in italy, since after the 90s collapse and the conseguent migrations it was one of the easiest and safest place to reach. The northern and eastern border were litteraly a warzone because of ex-yugo wars and on the southern border, Greek border guards (in typical balkan fashion) would not respect the geneva convention if they saw an Albanian getting close to it. In italy the restauration sector is probably the easies one to get an employemnt so a lot of Albanians worked and still work in restaurants here in Italy. The Arberesh community which you are refering to (middle-age albanian communities that settled in southern italy) is a very small minority and they don't identify themselves as Albanian but as Arberesh because language and cultures developed in a very different way for them, and despite you can clearly see the common root, they have their own distinct traits.

As a Bulgarian I disagree that we are backstabbers. In fact while we were under Ottoman rule, the Turks loved us most (after themselves of course), because we were honest and hard-working. About that in the 2nd Balkan War, Tsar Ferdinand of Bulgaria made a very stupid mistake, which the average Bulgarian was against. Also in Bulgaria we see the Greeks as backstabbers, because they are represented as the clever, dishonest guy, who is waiting for others to be weak and stab them in the back. Unfortunately today, we are not as friendly and are poor and miserable to some extend due to the communist regime. Also Macedonia is Bulgarian!
@mydogsbutler
@mydogsbutler Жыл бұрын
Some (not all) Bulgarians are such backstabbers they even stab themselves in back. Bulgarians that lied by claiming to be "Macedonians" is what helped create the fake Macedonians Bulgarians now complain about. All they had to say is they were Bulgarians rather than try to troll everyone by ridiculously claiming to be "Macedonians"".
