What humidity is best for ball pythons? What humidity should my ball pythons tank be? These are questions i see asked often online in ball python facebook groups and forums. Its often accompanied with questions like why is my ball python having shedding problems. Funnily enough the reason that a ball python might have problems shedding correctly is due to the humidity in the tank being wrong. This guide will solve your problem.

I keep mine between 70-80% and he does amazing. I let it dry out to around 65% then I re moisture the substrate/give a spray so it mainly stays between 70-80% after looking into the humidity in their natural habitat.

So I’m in the US and people told me I don’t need UVB, but two years ago I put it in my tank. He uses it on a regular basis. I was told a ten gallon tank was good but I did a 4x3x2 ft enclosure and he uses every bit of space. Also 2 years ago I did a night drop and once the lights go out he’s always out exploring. My wife and I handle him every night for an hour or two and he does really well (no stress). You always have great videos I’ve been watching them for years. Also just curious your thoughts on handling

This all sounds amazing! I also offer uvb and currently have a 4x2x2 which I also do a night drop! but will be upgrading next year to a 4x2x3

A good guideline when it comes to water for all animals is that you should want to drink it.

Thank you for all the guide care you publish, it's always very interesting and i learn a lot. For maintening humidity level i have read that it's better to pour water into the substrate than spraying because when you spray water there is instantly a very big increase of humidity level who could generate IR. Could you tell us what do you think about that.
@ReptilesandResearch
@ReptilesandResearch 8 ай бұрын
Yeah I’m not worried about that at all. Been spraying ball python enclosures for years. I get the premise though, you could vaporise bacteria etc. but I also think don’t such a have a dirty environment that it’s a huge concern.
@paulwhite9242

It's easier to pour the water into the substrate every few days-week vs misting multiple times a week. I also don't worry so much about ambient humidity in the entire enclosure so long as there more humid hides (and there's a few ways to do that). I wouldn't want it to be desert-dry but I don't stress about 5-10% variation

i keep mine about 60-80. i kept mine lower before and spiked it up during shedding, or the end of blue phase, but dav kauffmans video showed ball pythons living in like 94% humidity just fine. at 60-80 (usually around 70) i rarely have to spike it during shedding and ive never had an issue.

My ball pythons hide is halfway down into his 6 inch bioactive substrate. The humidity is always at 90+% and he gets perfect sheds everytime.

This was super helpful! I use coco husk & I add a bit of water at times to it. Should I worry about mold? I plan on changing it out every 2-3 months like I do with my cornsnake

How do you offer both UVB and UVA? Do they offer a bulb that does both?
@Carnosaur290

Hey there! I’ve been fostering a ball python for the past few months and probably will be for many more months. I’ve got the humidity it a decent spot and am using an over tank heater in the form of a basking bulb on a dimming thermostat. Oh, and some low intensity uvb! All of this in a 4 by 2 by 2 enclosure with multiple hides and decor. What has been confusing me is that instead of the hot hide the substrate and snake are only getting to be 81- 83 degrees Fahrenheit… while the surface temperature on top of the hide is 98-103 Fahrenheit! The snake seems to be able to digest its food just fine and spend most days inside of the warm side hide and comes out during the night for a little explore on its own. Its behavior isn’t telling me that anything is wrong but I still worry that those surface temperatures are too high or that the inside of the hide isn’t getting warm enough. If anyone has any experience on this, I would love to hear it, as I haven’t been able to find much info on it online.

Those surface temperatures arent crazy high, some people actually shoot for 104. Different materials will have different thermal mass. Rock will get hotter than wood. A resin hide can get hot too, if you have either rock or resin then try a bit of cork, you might find the surface temp ends up being a bit lower. Or you could lower the wattage of the bulb a tad, if you have a 100w go down to a 75w etc.
@Carnosaur290
@Carnosaur290 2 ай бұрын
@@ReptilesandResearch thanks so much for that reply! I actually have a 150 watt bulb on a dimming thermostat. I just am using a plastic hide from the pet store that’s a brown color. I’m glad to learn though that those surface temperatures are actually okay and won’t be damaging to the ball python. Again, I really really appreciate a second opinion, as I could only find a select few sources that said anything about this.

My tank keeps dropping down to like 30-40%. my substrate is still damp however and there is condesation on the side still. my snakes shed was all in one piece without any issues. i just replaced my hydrometer just incase its bad and covered the top as much as i could to keep moisture inside. hopefully that fixes my problem
@ReptilesandResearch
@ReptilesandResearch 5 ай бұрын

@@ReptilesandResearch Yea i installed a new one and it reads a 60-70% for the past day while the old one is reading 25-35%. So gonna let it sit for a few days and let the moisture do its thing. glad i replaced it before i got to crazy and flooded the substrate. Poor girl is filthy on the bottom half of her scales from the wet substrate. gonna keep an eye on it to make sure but i think all is well now

@@ReptilesandResearch apparently the build up of bacteria in the bottle is not cleaned daily and it can cause scale rot since it's just gets the surface only of the substrate I spray my ball python as well hence why I'm confused since I keep on hearing different things from professionals This what I have been getting told on the ball python sub reddit
@ReptilesandResearch
@ReptilesandResearch 2 ай бұрын
@@ninetails9037 that’s a bit over the top, that sounds like someone’s not cleaned a bottle in years rather than a day, I just refresh the water each day so it’s fresh water, I don’t even clean the bottle with chemicals or anything. Been spraying ball pythons for years, with both my pet one and the hundreds I’ve worked with in shops. Scale rot happens when a snake sits in constantly wet conditions without the ability to dry off. Then bacteria can start working on the scales. That’s the oddest thing I’ve heard in a while lol

Some people say 40-60 some people say 60-70 some ppl say 60-80 I'm getting three different humidity levels it's hard to pin point the exact one Also, spraying the substrate too much leaks the dye and possibly bad for my ball python?

Thanks for the reply! I just don't wanna get my Snake sick, it's good to learn from all reptile keeper but the numbers in humidity are hard to perfect with all these numbers I am trying to find a good number, I'm using a mix of both Repti bark by zoo Med and forest floor by zoo Med, I have a misting machine too to set off every 30mins for 6seconds I live in Canada and during winter it's dry here so this video really helps!
