Ball turning Attachment

This is a ball tuning tool for creating spherical knobs such as shift knobs or drill press knobs and even the knob at the end of the tool handle that I made.

Glad you liked the Video. I call it my right of passage project, it was the first big project I tackled, surprisingly it all went as it should. Welder/fabricator/diesel mechanic 46 years now retired.

Nice work John, a very practical tool to have. BUT, I would have loved to see details in mounting it to the lathe carriage just before starting to cut.

The tool was made to fit my model lathe. To mount it you take the two fastener off that secure the compound slid remove the compound slide and mount the tool in its place using the two fasteners.

sking0369 Yes it was all measured out prior to the build and yes you want to be on center.

try to shorten how far out ur part is from the chuck.that will help with chatter n improve finish

I guess my question was your height wouldn't change once it's fixed on the lathe. (I guess you just measured to make sure your on center?) Isn't it important to be on center ?

What about height adjustment? So your on center?

trialnterror The ball turner is made for my lathe only. If you wanted hight adjustment you could drill the cutting bar straight down and add two set screws one just behind the up right with the cutters and the other on the opposite end. You also would have to mill off a couple of thousands on the bottom of the cutting bar so you'd have your up and down limits.

unfortunately, there are no plans available. When I made this it all came from my head but didn't put anything on paper. Thanks for the interest.

it would be great to adjust the hight of that so you wouldnt have the problem with the little knob left over at the front

The height is already worked into the build and centered for use on my lathe only. If I would have turned it a little further on the video you would have seen it remove the little tit at the end. Thanks for the feed back.
