If the vehicle drives better sideways, why not just turn the chair 90 degrees and reconfigure the controller? (it would look weirdly asymmetrical, I suppose) Also, have you considered using an accelerometer to detect unwanted rotations and automatically turn to account for them so it'll hold it's orientation even on rough terrain?

A 60 degree rotation would put it into a Y configuration (like a three wheel motorcycle). It's more stable too, especially if you're turning at speed. Also you don't have one of the balls in between your legs.
@kiml42
@kiml42 2 жыл бұрын
@@ltjgambrose A 60 or 180 degree change gives you two at the front and one at the back which might be better for a few reasons, but it still leaves you only using 2 motors when going forwards or backwards, the asymmetrical 2 wheels on one side, one on the other configuration would let you use all three motors when going forwards and backwards.

This looks like so much fun, they used to have a similar event in the US called the Maker Faire, but it unfortunately got cancelled in most cities due to lack of funding.
@RobindenHertog
@RobindenHertog 2 жыл бұрын
I've been to maker fairs and EMF (and have presented stuff on both) and they might seem superficially similar but they are definitely not the same, in a maker faire you're not likely to have talks about how someone got all the *public* data out of those rent a scooter apps and oh it's quite a lot actually, or live try it yourself blacksmithing or a talk about materials used on robot-wars/battle-bots robots or have a laser tag game with 3d printed DIY laser game setup, etc. The public is also very different, maker fairs attract more general public while this attracts more makers creatives and hackers. It's much more like a combo of defcon and burning man for you US people.

If you spread the wheels out so that there's a gap the seat can fit it, that would lower c of g. A bit like those tadpole recumbent bikes with one wheel behind your head and the other two either side of your feet or knees. It would be bigger but a bit safer I think. I’m sure James won’t see this, but it has potential for it to be a really flexible wheelchair. Electric wheelchairs have made huge leaps, but they are still limited in manoeuvrability. Imagine in a shop with a normal electric wheelchair try to move to get to the right position to get an item of the shelf. Now imagine this with the added ability to rotate the seat and suddenly things become easier. Yes, there could be issues with stability and the fact it’s very high off the ground but these things maybe could resolved.

@@richards7909 It is a major issue, every additional moving part is an additional risk of failure, you're better off just making an electric wheelchair with 4 wheel steering and each wheel should be driven individually.
@richards7909
@richards7909 2 жыл бұрын
@@Eagle3302PL If that was the case we would never do anything because things overcomplicated things might fail. Going on that argument, simple rockets should be used to launch satellites and left in space because the Space X ones are overcomplicated with their ability to land and they might fail.
@Eagle3302PL
@Eagle3302PL 2 жыл бұрын
@@richards7909 Another silly argument, spacex is doing what they do because it's more cost effective to have reusable rockets so it's a potentially more profitable venture in the long term. Also they have some of the world's best engineers to trouble shoot and check that stuff before every use. An omni wheelchair would not be more effective than current products, it'd be more expensive to build and maintain making it a foolish business venture. You gonna send an engineer to the disabled person's house every day to maintain their wheelchair?
