I thought the sheer ambiguity of this story was just amazing. The slightly sinister vibe you get from Buster the whole time despite him never doing anything explicitly dishonourable (on the face of it) is a huge testament both to Tim Blake Nelson's acting and the craftsmanship of the writing and production staff. The way it subtly deconstructs the archetype whilst simultaneously embracing it is just so damn entertaining.

Yeah he wasn't really doing anything wrong. But you have to admit Buster himself had that sadistic streak about him, him singing a song about a man he just killed is like him dancing on his grave. Not to mention how he humiliated Surly Joe's brother during the duel, making him suffer. It's no wonder a more powerful presence, The Kid came waltzing in at the height of his arrogance. It's a shame he had to die, but it's also... Oddly satisfying how he met his some sort of comeuppance with The Kid.

@@jack-exzolt9858 i don't think he regards his death as comeuppance, he doesn't see killing a man honorably as morally wrong and therefore doesn't object to it being done to him he's an ethical man, a pleasant and charismatic one, and also he's a blood psychopath who likes to kill people lmao. he's not THAT far from anton chigurh

To be fair, If you walk in to a saloon, find your brother is shot dead, and everyone is cheerfully singing a song about his death mere moments after dying, you kind of have to kill the man that killed him. *Lyrics* Surly Joe, the Gambler. He will gamble nevermore His days of Stud and Hold 'em, they are done It was long about last April, he stepped into this saloon But he never really took to anyone Surly Joe (Surly Joe!) Surly Joe (Surly Joe!) Oh, wherever he's gambling now, I don't know (We don't know!) He was slick, but I was slicker. He drew quick, but I was quicker And the table stopped his ticker, Surly Joe yee-haw! Surly Joe (Surly Joe!) Surly Joe (Surly Joe!) Won't be missed by anyone will Surly Joe (Surly Joe!) Humankind he frowned upon. But not now, his face is gone Guess your frowning days are done oh, Surly Joe (yee-haw!) Surly Joe (Surly Joe!) Surly Joe (Surly Joe!) A cedilla on the C of Çurly Joe (Surly Joe!) He was mean in days of yore. Now they're mopping up the floor One more sight to make him sore oh, Surly Joe (yee-haw!) Surly Joe (Surly Joe) Surly Joe (Surly Joe) Where the rest of his face has got to, we don't know (We don't know!) He was never any fun, now his grumpy race has run Kisser blown to kingdom come oh, Surly Joe (yee-haw!)

Buster needs a prequel film. The entire movie is good, but an outlaw who kills enemies Looney Tunes style. and mocks the dead with a song deserves more time. EDIT: WOW, I came back to watch this clip, had no clue this comment blew up. The movie gradually gets darker and you notice the characters after slight changes get more and more sad. At first enjoying and laughing at the face of death (there’s a pretty girl, Buster Scruggs smiling during the shootout and at the sight of death) but then getting darker and darker (thespians, and the bounty hunters)

What's hilarious is how the segment parody of what you expect a white hat in a classic western: he kills only in self defense, respects the local law, and loves to sing rather than fight. But the film twists it around by putting all those tropes in a new context so that it comes blackly comic and disturbing.

I love how this a musical scene that actually makes sense in the context of the movie in a realistic way. It's so musical yet no one's dancing or singing other than Buster, the "Surly Joe" chant is simple enough that the entire bar could've picked up organically and the melody is so classic that the piano man was bound to know it and make it work.

I love Buster and his horse, Dan. Definitely the best segment. One of the song's funniest lines, which I didn't catch the first time, is "A cedilla on the C of Curly Joe ," meaning the "C" is pronounced as an "S," so it's pronounced "Surly." Also when one of bad guys refers to Buster as The West Texas Twit. Great parody of Old West nicknames. And the last scene with Buster - no spoilers - was icing on the cake.

I absolutely LOVE THIS SCENE! BUT... how the hell did that gun go from a single action revolver to a semiautomatic weapon in the flip (or 3) of a board? I may be nitpicking, but I'm a real life firearms "enthusiast" and it definitely kinda bothers me. He could have kicked the table once and done what needed to be done, huh? Doesn't detract from the scene much, but it deserves recognition. Chock it up to "movie magic" I reckon...
@janefoxguitars6061
@janefoxguitars6061 Жыл бұрын
@@theanxious Yeah but...if you're gonna nitpick then how about the actual table board flipping up? How could Buster be sure it would come loose, pivot on the side he's on and then not just slide off or even flip back over on him? To enjoy this movie you have to suspend disbelief on a LOT of things...I'm relatively sure based on what you are saying that even if it was a "one-shot" event it's not likely to have happened. If the hammer was pulled back and his finger was on the trigger I would assume that as soon as the board made contact with his hand the gun would have fired (also assuming he lost control of his trigger finger and it's a super super hair trigger) and the bullet would have fired probably into the ceiling at a 45 degree angle towards Buster. The idea that his hand would be violently smacked with a board and then it would travel up and over and back towards his face BEFORE he misfires seems unlikely...
