We know that a ballast box is not the most exciting add-on to your tractor, but it is critical. Balancing your front and rear loads are the key to driving safely, and driving safely is the key to enjoying your time in the seat. Today we'll compare the John Deere iMatch ballast box to the Titan. We'll let you know which of these Category 1 three-point hitch boxes we prefer and why. And we'll also give you a quick overview of the BIGTOOLRACK for a very different option of a rear add-on.

Do I see a balast box designed by GWT in the future? I'm sure you could come up with a multifunction balast box design. Maybe a slot for a chainsaw for when folks are using a grapple in the woods.

Bought the Titan ballast box via your link and based on your suggestion. I like that its quick hitch compatible (the Kubota ones are not based on my understanding) and the cost is about half of the others. I admire your passion to never be content with existing designs though and wish you the best with that.

I purchased my tractor with the JD ballast box and extension. I have been tempted to dump it out and put 2 pvc tubes in for my rake and pitch fork. I do like the features in your box. The biggest problem I have with my box is ground clearance and this is on my 2025R. I also have forgotten to lift the bucket until I tried to move. Now the rest of the story. I spent the money and bought the double Heavy Hitch weight bracket and cart. I am very happy with this set up. I already had plenty of weights.

Great vid! If you create a better ballast box, you got an order right here. I’ve heard off just because the choices are so minimal and not versatile. Pretty much use a carry all loaded with pavers. Would love a more compact & versatile solution. Keep up the great work!

Got a Titan right after buying my 1025r. All your points plus over $100 less sold me on it. Only 'issue' was one of the pins was bent slightly from shipping. Hasn't affected using it though. Filled mine with sand so it would be easier to empty if needed. Figured since I've Pat's hitch, the extra extension would offset the slightly less weight. Ditto the remark about putting pipe insulation in the tool holder holes.

I took a 30 gallon plastic barrel, cut holes and ran a draw bar through it. Then I stuck a 2" receiver out the back. Inside the barrel, I mocked this all together, with a top link connection out the top. Once I tested it and lifting it didn't bind on the top link, I welded everything together inside the barrel. I threw some old dumbell weights, and scrap steel in the bottom and filled it with cement. Total weight is about 400 pounds, which coupled with my loaded tires, is fine for my Kubota BX2680. The nice thing about it is it doesn't stick out the back very far, so it's less likely, to swing into things. With my Pat's quick hitch ends, hookup is a breeze.

I got a JD ballast box with my 1025r when I bought it new. The following spring with a tax return I added a backhoe. From then on I’d use the backhoe for ballast which did a better job than the box. With the box I hardly use it anymore. Been using it to store chains in my shed but I may hand it over to some friends that are looking at buying a tractor themselves

I think perfect would be a ballast box that you could run an electrical line or third function to, then have it detect level and move the ballast toward the high side to make you more stable on horizontal slopes. Currently any weight you add (ballast box, fluid, suitcase weights) is centered, which helps with traction but not tipping. If you could move the weight to the high side, you would help even more with traction and dramatically more with tipping.

Maybe have two connection heights or just recommend people not use them at full height on the 3 point? I too often go over very rough terrain and would need more clearance then these appear to offer. Thought about buying the titan and relocating the mounts, but also need a lot more than 800lbs ballast.
@danielsharon524

For a cheaper and even more basic option in your "product line," could maybe make a solid concrete ballast & cast in the 3pt. attachments. Could put (optional?) threaded inserts for casters or embed a couple pvc tubes for storage or even anchor in a flat steel band around the top (&/or threaded inserts) to weld/attach optional accessories. I guess shipping could be an issue but... Maybe (thinking this through real time) just a little steel around the top/bottom to protect it & provide a place for the receiver/casters/mounting. etc. Most of the cost of the 2 you featured is probably in the steel itself which if filling w/concrete is only acting as a (expensive) form.

I bought the Titan ballast box earlier this year. I too liked the options of the Titan. I however find it to be cheaply made. The non-JD green paint was no big deal, but the cheap paint QUALITY was quickly evident. It started peeling the first time I used a light duty pressure washer on it to wash off the cow dung. Also, if you use sand as your ballast weight like I did, the sand leaks like crazy out of that nifty little trap door. I had to remove all the sand (a real pain) and seal the trap door on the inside with silicone. If I had it to do all over again, I would’ve ponied up for the JD box.
@GoodWorksTractors
@GoodWorksTractors 3 жыл бұрын
Good to know about sand. Bricks don't fall out so easy and neither does stone that I've used. Never tried sand. Makes sense that it would fall through the tiniest of slot considering its grain size. I haven't really noticed a difference in any level of quality. It's a hunk of steel that hangs off the back of your tractor. One does nothing, the other at least has versatility. Given the price is close enough to call identical, I'll give versatility the win.

I drilled the bottom of my ballast box and bolted casters on it so I can move it around the garage when it's not on the tractor. Also, I cast my own "suitcase" weights out of concrete so that four of them just fit in the box with handles on top to remove, just in case. I'll have to see if the casters are high enough to allow bolting a receiver under it. I like the idea someone suggested for carrying a chain saw, good idea!

Caveat Emptor! I purchased a Titan Ballast Box 'scratch and dent' sale one because it was in stock...and $10 less. There was some shipping delays....no big deal, just some personal frustration...with 11 days of 'it will be delivered tomorrow' shipping notifications, while it sat in Mississippi. But the box arrived without the slide in for the door and without the cat 1 pins. So the 10 dollar in stock savings probably will cost me $20 more when it's all said and done...not a huge deal but it really miff's me. So I did a one star review that has yet to appear on their website. To be fair, I did purchase a Titan skid steer hitch and it arrived on time and worked well. The 5 star review appeared when I basically hit send. For Titan, I'll try to buy in person or from a dealer who has one in stock, so you can make sure you get everything you're supposed to on the purchase. I don't know if I'll ever use their website again...it definitely will not be my first choice to purchase from. YMMV.
@GoodWorksTractors
@GoodWorksTractors 3 жыл бұрын
That sounds annoying to be sure. Hard to say what you paid for with scratch and dent discount. I mean, it's discounted for a reason. If pins were included, if slide in door was included, who knows, I have no idea how marked down products are sold for discount. The manufacturer has nothing to do with the product in transit. I see complaints like this frequently. We are all at the mercy of UPS, FedEx, or whichever freight line it shipped with. I deal with freight issues all the time and talking to any of them is like talking to a brick wall in front of my face. They are a necessary evil, but totally separate entities from a manufacturer or dealer like myself that ships product. Fortunately, they actually deliver the vast majority of orders on time and undamaged. Those parts could have also been lost in transit. Seems a bit of a stretch to leave a 1 Star review for the manufacturer on a discounted product bought as "scratch and dent" and in-transit delivery issues which the manufacturer cannot control. Just sayin...

Not fond of the way the titan box has the hitch pin under the box instead of behind it. Atleast it has a hitch though. Here's a tip for the frugal folks out there: take some empty 1 gallon coolant jugs fill them with old wheel weights. Put the caps on and put them in the ballast box. Drill a couple holes in the box to let rain water drain out. Weights should be available for free or next to nothing at tire shops in the area
