Brilliant idea impressed by your in-house quarrying to get the different mixtures. May I suggest for those who do not wish to purchase such a a large bag that you can find a similar product in shops that specialise in aquarium products and it comes small plastic tubs. It's used to ballast the bottom of a fish tank. Great tip on sifting the grit to achieve the right mixture. Thank you for sharing. Stay safe.

There is no doubt how good blue metal fines are for all sorts of scenic ingredients, BUT, BEWARE, our blue metal here in Albany (and possibly other parts of WA) has an iron content! Drag a magnet thru it to check. So what I hear you ask? Well, low slung speaker magnets hoover the stuff up like it's going out of fashion! Don't ask how we know! Make sure you are very fussy glueing it down then carefully vacuum the ballasted track. Then drag a magnet over it to be sure. I love your mechanical agitator. Neat.
@iansimpson54162 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, yes was aware of the iron content, I was told cluster dust has a 1% iron content, did the magnet test with little result and after applying using the usual gluing method had no trouble, once it's down, it's down, done around 15m of ballasting so far (lot more to go) with great results at very little cost. I probably should of mentioned that in the video but deemed it irrelevant due to the application process which eliminates any problems, I also neglected to mention that I wash the ballast before applying. thanks for the comment.

Hello Ian , Great Video this could be a game changer in ballast HOPE I CAN GET IT IN THE UK Regards Dave
@iansimpson54163 жыл бұрын
Hi David, I think it's called Granite Dust in the uk, I have also found out it comes in various sizes, if you find it i would go for the coarser option, you'll get more varied sized when sifting, the 2mm is to fine and powdery. here's a link on how its used in the UK. www.perfectgrassltd.co.uk/how-to-install-the-groundworks-for-an-artificial-grass-lawn/ It's probably the same stuff we used here in Australia

What a great idea! Might see if I can find something similar here in the States. A quick search for blue metal dust only turned up suppliers in Australia, so maybe it is an Australian term? Really well done - you got my gears turning! 🤠

Thanks Steve Like I mentioned It’s the stuff they put under artificial grass, iwhich is very common here in Oz, due to water restrictions in summer, So if your in a cooler climate might be hard to find, keep those gears turning👍🏻

I'm on the slow train to making ballast from crusher dust at the moment. I'm just using hand sieves to make N and HO because I didn't want to spend ages inventing and building a mechanical device. I think I can make a mechanical sieve from what I can see of yours in the video if that's OK. Would you have any tips or sketches that you would be willing to share so that I can learn from your experience. Great video at just the right time. Regards Jeff
@iansimpson54163 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeff, the only 2 sieves I used are aluminium flyscreen mesh and rubber non slip drawer liner available at most hardware stores, It's all about hole size, experiment on whats available in your area, I've experimented with other material but the is the only stuff that gives me a range of rock sizes, feel free to ask for more info.

Great idea Ian. I see no reason why you should not turn that into a business yourself. What size are the particles for OO/HO? They certainly look right. As I model industrial I use old water filter contents. They're round and half are white-ish but as I put loads of mucky paint on them anyway no one notices!
@iansimpson5416 Жыл бұрын
Thanks John The size is much the same as the ho/oo bought stuff and the colour is a lot closer to real ballast. I’ll look into that filter idea, just love experimenting 👍🏻

Hi Charlie, did a washed sample but didn’t make much difference after I weathered and glued it down so left it as is.

Should any precautions be taken from breathing potential dust? (i.e. should you wear a mask?)
@iansimpson54163 жыл бұрын
Hi, Good point, I was in a well ventilated work shop, so no problem but if in a small shed I'd were a mask, (I'm sure you would have one) it only give off a small amount of cement dust, nothing more than if you were actually mixing cement. also after you have remove the powder in the first stage you can wash the ballast to remove any residual dust.
@pmb9172 Жыл бұрын
Yes is the answer , dust eminates , I use graded granite in 20kgs bags so jus pouring it you can see the dust generated and I don’t think you want to be breathing it in .
@JohnHill-qo3hb Жыл бұрын
Great idea... did you run a magnet through it?
@iansimpson5416 Жыл бұрын
Yes, it picked up a few grains when I put it on one of those magnetic sheets like the ones they print calendars on, but once locked down with the glue/ water mix it’s solid

Of course it is a matter of how much ballast you need. He built a machine and several sives which probably cost much more time and money than just buying what you need. But for a garden track, this is pretty cost effective.👍
@mpeterll Жыл бұрын
I like your definition of being lazy: being proactive in inventing and building a machine to do the boring part for you. That is anything but lazy.
