Trying to find a new mic for our worship leader, choose a handful that looked interesting to try side-by-side. Take a listen and see what you think! Wide range of price, and types. (dynamics, condensers, ribbons) a lot of different mics to hear!
Recorded dry with no EQ or processing, just straight in to the Yamaha DM2000 preamps. (Acoustic guitar is mixed in slightly from it's own channel, that's not all bleed.)

The Beyerdynamics and Heil really stood out to my ears. Very clear.

TG V70d sounds very good, although obviously does not take plosives well. The levels were not matched on all mics, the M80 sounds better if you turn it up a bit. Also, you must factor in the polar pattern for your application. Most of these I would guess(since no info is given here) are cardioid which will pick up more stage noise where as the the M80 is hyper-cardioid which is a plus for isolation. Given the price point + performance I would choose the Telefunken.

Beta 58, Earthworks, sennheiser and the Neumann are my favorites. But by price and bleed rejection beta58 is the best choice. Cheers from Argentina!

The Neumann sounds amazing. I was surprisingly disappointed in the M80 - it has a certain frequency where it sounds metallic (did anyone else hear it ?). The TG-v50d sounded great, probably the best deal overall.

TG V70d sounds best to me but there are varying amounts of reverb on those mikes & different proximity too. Nice idea but a sloppy test IMO.

No reverb, if you are hearing reverb it's what the mic is picking up from the room (1700 seat auditorium). 'coz no one ever moves when they sing live right?

due to the many positive votes for the beyerdynamic i would like to remark that the most special of its sound is the fact that the guitar is to hear much more in the foreground which really sounds very nicely. BUT: this may be caused by a less directional polar pattern - resulting in a higher risk of feedback!

Beyer 70 has a very directional (hypercardioid) polar pattern.

the big caveat is that most people confuse louder for better. without matching the dB output levels, these comparisons are less than optimal, though still useful. If you have a smooth logrhythmic fader at your finger tips, I recommend sliding each mic up or down to match the last.

I don’t see much mention of it but, the clarity and detail of the Telefunken M80 is very good not quite as good as the condenser mics but still very nice. I’m not a fan of hyped mics though, many of these are hyped highs. I’d like to hear the Telefunken M81 added in there.

The beyerdynamic TG v70d sounded very condeser like for a dynamic.. The sennheiser condenser e965 also sounded very studio like in this test.. But due to price and preferring a dynamic mic the TG v70d takes the cake in my book We have some great PA speakers but they have a little of that harsh area around 4kHz so presence boosted mics at that frequency sounds a little exaggerated..

awesome array of mics....I would have had him do a MUCH SHORTER section of the song...at the end maybe his voice would have equal strength, and might remember lyrics better. That said....LOVE the song & voice ..... Song Title/Band...Artist ????

Thanks so much for a test like this. I like the beyerdynamic tg v50d. I use shure 58 for live and sennheiser for recording. I do like heil pr 35 live as well. but im going to try the tg v50d as a result of this video

Wow, thanks for putting this all together! Nice review. But first of all, I don’t believe that the expensive Neumann will sound like that, something’s wrong maybe the cable or settings. 😝 My pick: 1. Telefunken, a tie with TG v50, 2. Heil PR-35

I once tested 3 mics in a music store - the SM58, Sennheiser E845 and the Beyerdynamic TG v70d - I have to say the sm58 sounded like sh.t against the other two. Dry, bland, sounding like a threshing floor. There are much better good microphones than the sm58, sm is totally overrated just because everyone says it's "legend" - no, it absolutely isn't. @Ballast Media - thanks for the video! :)

As far as I know, with HD video comes higher quality audio... last time I checked. I can tell by listening, but I will literally go and check for specs, LOL. I think KZfaq has changed the way video relates to audio in the last x years.

Your right, prior to 2013 an HD video would get 192kbps and SD would get 128kbps. After 2013 the bit rate is more determined by the viewers internet connection then the original video. All videos SD/HD have a potential maximum of 192kbps, but KZfaq scales that down based on the viewers connection.

@@cally0553 It's pick up pattern is pretty wide, and it picks up a lot of what's happening in the room. So, if you have a loud stage, you will get those sounds bleeding into your vocal mic along with your vocals. You'd want a more directional mic for a loud stage to try and provide more rejection of other sounds.

The Heil PR35 has got to be the most overrated vocal mic (after the SM58). I had one and got rid of it. Ridiculous amount of plosives and handling noise. You can hear how noisy and rumbly it is in this demo. I use the Neumann KMS105 and this demo does NO justice to it!

As much as I hate the SM58, I think the Heil's sound in this comparison is nice, full, uniform and rounded and I quite like it.

Neumann sounds the most balanced on all frequencies... would be the easiest to mix... doesn’t have harsh high end frequencies... But Beyerdynamic 70d comes second... Sennheiser 965 in third...

These are all dynamic mics, not studio mics. They are designed used in live situations (generally on stage), so to test them correctly they should not be used with pop filters.

One thing you can say is that the SM58 is by far the weakest mic in this lineup. That being said, it's a 1960s design, and the cheapest save the cheapest Beyerdynamics mic. And it sounds better too.

There is no way you can do this and say who you think is best, Because there is def some gain changes. The V70 sounds the best in this video. But why use pictures? If you don’t use effects and really using the mics you said you use, Then show us all the mics
