The ev was the winner to me. So clear, so clean. The sm58 was the close second. But definitely more muddy as people say. You guys should retest one day with the ev n/d76

Great review, extremely helpful, thanks for posting. I’m looking at the blue mic, which led me here. It’s funny how people’s ears hear differently, I despise the 58, thought the ev had a very thin sound, liked the blue, especially on the speaking, and thought the beta sounded the most balanced, even though I don’t want to like it. The casino sound company that I worked with this past weekend uses beta 58’s and I noticed that I was not hearing the harshness I hear in the 2-5k range with the sm58. Also, the review clearly showed that different mics are matches for diffferent singers. Again, thanks for doing this, very helpful.

I use sm58 and beta58 both in live applications. I find the beta58 way more responsive, ie lower gain. Feedback rejection is increased because if this, as well as handling noise and overall quality. Beta58 for me, but I loved your video. Very informative. Big thumbs up.

Two flaws in the testing... 1.) Your feedback rejection test procedure was incomplete... you don't test feedback rejection simply by slowly pointing a mic at a monitor - that only verifies the angle at which feedback will occur, because ALL mics feedback once the source is rotated into their pickup pattern. You must test off-axis rejection by properly positioning the mic in it's intended use position and slowly turning the volume up in a given environment and seeing at what level feedback occurs. 2.) You gave the SM58 a higher build quality rating than the beta58a... try slamming both mics onto a hard surface... they'll both still work fine, but the wind-screen on the SM58 will be dented/flattened...and the beta58a will not be. The reason why is the same reason the beta58a had less handling noise... it's got a built-in internal shock mount system as where the SM58 doesn't... therefor the beta58a's wind-screen can be made a lot stronger. The SM58's wind-screen was actually designed to crush when slammed like that in order to absorb the shock and save the capsule. Still though, a very thoughtful video with lots of valuable comparisons overall. Thanks for making it.

The EV gave me a more linear impression and provided some "air" which during live performances is a much needed quality. The room will absorb treble frequencies, unless the performance is carried out in a chapel with hard reflective surfaces. The Beta58 had the thickest transients, which with a vocal performance translates into throatyness, articulation ahd depth. But I would never allocated a Beta58 to a tenor. And personally I'm not a big fan of the SM58s due to the dynamically uninspiring and flat tone they impart. There are other microphones on the market like the EV ND96 and the Audix OM7 that clearly outperfrom the 767 or the SM58. Thank you for the demonstration and the comprehensive comments and assessments !

58a and 767a look to sound the best. Although, hard pick between them I guess. I own a 767a, very happy about it. Maybe the beta pumps the bass a little too much, but seems to be better with handling noise

Blue is my first pick, then EV 767, Shure.
@amdenis
@amdenis 6 жыл бұрын
Oh my heavens. While the Shure’s have their place, the Blue and the EV were so much more articulate, neutral but dynamic, and with a much wider and flatter frequency response- especially the EV. For example, it was difficult to make out your spoken passage, as it was so muffled. We have all of those and many other mic’s here, and the SM’s are generally used primarily as backups, or tight-mic’d high SPL work. I assume you hear how muffled and how limited in frequency response the SM’s are? The Sure’s are “very durable, dead-sounding mic’s”, as is commonly said, which is a tradeoff for being able to handle 175dB+ SPL with that design. It does make their live handling easier though. However, we have killed a few 57’s and 58A’s.

Im glad i still have my EV N/D767a. Such an amazing mic for the $50 and better than the Shure at half the cost. When it bought it years ago along with a full Drum-Kit set I was pumped how good all their mics sounded and still am. Theyre now double or triple the price on the used market because so many people realized how great of a mic/s they are and also have since been discontinued by EV along with their entire lineup for a "New" generation of mics from EV that cost more and dont sound nearly as good. EV has gone downhill in my opinion. I guess EV decided to start charging more in the ball park of the top manufacturers with their mic line up instead of being a company that could offer great performance for alot less money.

I Personally love the Beta...Hands Down - One of the Best Vocal Mics around. I use the SM58 for several applications simply because it handles anything I throw at it (Quite Literally). I own Both and I Love Both - I definitely recommend either for any occasion(indoors & outdoors) The SM58 will deliver professionalism, But if you want the Best Overall Sound Quality, save up for the Shure BETA- It's Worth it.

@-WolfMan-
@-WolfMan- 6 жыл бұрын
+Alex I would recommend at any level of experience - for any application. Especially a beginner. Why? Because it proves to them that Professional sounding instruments & equipment Really Do Exist (not just through the medium of High Quality TV/Movie or Sound Editing)... and that they can have it right in the palm of their hand so that they, too, can experience that amazing world for themselves. Don't just settle for the Cheap Quick Fix... Look around - Ask Questions - Do Your OWN Research - Save Some Money For What You Really Want - Trust me; you'll be a Much Happier person that you did.

Definitely would have been nice with sennheiser 835 and 935.. and agree feedback rejection test should be done differently, and off axis pickup of mics.. and a few distances. Shure mics are designed differently for two different applications.. the beta needs to have closer proximity.. Sennheisers same .. you basically need to be touching mic for best sound, but that gives them superior feedback rejection.. again different tools.. I would not even consider the EV or Blue mic.. never ever saw either being on a tech rider .. normally bet 58 or sennheiser is on a tech rider

Amazing review. It's a very useful comparison for me. But no, SM58 has the most muffled sound, you ride on the hype I see. Judged as the worst for sound quality is the best for me, the most open and natural sound - Encore 100. But alas, it has awful handling noise and average feedback (but the worst feedback for EV N/D 767a). I'm not Blue "funbooooy". Cheers!

As far as the SM-58 and Beta 58 being "Industry Standard" sorry but, they are old technology and, sound like crap to me. The EV blew all of the other mics away in my opinion. Considering it is an entry-level, as you claimed it to be, EV makes great mics and speakers. Why don't you do the same comparison with a top-of-the-line EV ND mic? You'll see and hear why the 58's won't even come close to their sound and performance.
