Before I played with him in the Ryder Cup in 1983, I played 9 holes with Seve in an Exhibition match at Woburn 1980 a day after the Open at Muirfield. After he beat Mike McLean and myself 2 and one, Seve then got his 1 iron out and threw 3 balls into a green side bunker. He stiffed the 1st two 1 iron bunker shots and holed the 3rd shot. I will never forget this Genius and only Seve could've done this. Paul Way.

Seve was my hero, and I saw him play just the once. It's so sad he died so young, but so many will forever be inspired by him. So humble, so grateful for his life, he was a great man. Having just watched the Ryder Cup 2012 DVD, it is clear his passion inspires the European Tour today. Thanks Seve.

I only saw him once. The final round at Lytham St Anne's in 1988. Finished on a Monday due to the heavy rain on Saturday. We stayed at an apartment in St Anne's on the top floor Slazenger had booked the top three apartments, My dad, sister and I were given corporate tickets and we wanted to follow the three ball of Faldo, Price and Seve but the galleries on that day were 12 deep. Being young my sister and I would not have seen much. So we sat in the reserved area of the grandstand at the 18th green. We watched them play the first from the stand and waited, a caddy for a golfer who played earlier in the day sat down beside my dad, started chatting, he then got out a mini tv. And we watched the final day of the open in the grandstand overlooking the 18th green. Saw his chip at the last, Nick Price had chipped from almost the same place moments earlier. Both went close, Seve won. 65 shots. And saw him lift the claret jug. He was my hero.

Forget sitting down and eating at the man's table-my Dad (he had the honour of watching Seve play and says "In a lifetime of playing/watching golf, by far the moment I'll treasure most" ) Tiger couldn't and never WILL carry El Matador's golf bags... Seve; Your game, that wonderful smile, that will of iron which made the *impossible* possible-that's how I will remember you best. Rest in peace, for you have shown the courage of a champion and have earned your place amongst the angels.

There are great comments here. At 17, I was lucky to have stood next to Seve on the practise ground at Sandwich in 1985, I was the only one there and he was 10 feet away from me hitting various clubs, the ball flight was alway a high draw where the ball would seemingly drop from the sky as if on a parachute, and his caddy would catch it. One could learn by observing the way he struck ball and then ground, and each divot was the same. It was all so effortless, and Tiger is still nowhere near Seve's level, Seve is the King, before him was Arnold Palmer. Long live the King!

I was 14 years of age in July 1985 and just taking the game up. My father took me to the last day of the Open to show me what it was all about. That Sunday morning I was also lucky enough to see Seve hitting 8 irons into his caddy's baseball cap about 160 yards away... he hardly had to move to catch them! So many memories came after that. He was literally my hero.

Seve is the reason I took up golf. Seve may not have been the best golfer ever but he was the most courageous and honourable. The Golden Bear is another. And Tiger can never ever be even half the men these two are. Golf is about heart and passion. Well done Seve and to see you in the Open 2010 will be just fantastic - even if you just play one hole.

Thanks for posting this - Seve is a legend and wonderfully - he was fully appreciated as an icon before his medical challenges. ..... as an Irishman he was a genius in his major wins but moved to legend withthe Ryder cup - with an innate understanding of how important that was to Europeans and I wonder how he would rank winning it amongst his greatest achievements.
