Roller ball is much smoother and easier but also more prone to getting on the fingers, or leaking without the cap. If you are cool with that, I really suggest going with a fountain pen. A quality one is much more charming with only a little more work, It allows you to use many more options with ink. Sometimes a bit of ritual unlocks a lot of fun. But if the occasional ink on the fingers must never happen, stick with the ball point.
