Except by the book's logic, which the show is meant to be based off of, Chaos isn't just magic. It isn't a force that just came into being or was merely obtained by the Elves- it is a cosmic power, a part of the balance. Chaos Magic, as he puts it, consumes the user over time, making it inherently deadly and incredibly potent. It wasn't just "fire", it was any element, any force, and you could do almost anything with it so long as you had the will, skill and knowledge of how to draw on it. To date, Yennefer of Vengerberg and Vilgefortz are heeded as two of the most powerful channelers of Chaos, based purely on the fact that they knew how to pull on it without dying from it.

That last scene, Balor was really stupid to not telekinetically destroy the pillar they were hiding behind, or else just telekinetically attack them ( he clearly knew exactly where they were).

You know what's more stupid than that? That last guy's line. "We need to use his power against him. I'll merge my power with his chaos energy"... oh shut up. This is why most fantasy films/shows are fudging terrible because they have to say ridiculous lines like that. Wouldn't it be better had he said: "I'll lure him away." And then she's like "What? We are both getting out!" and he's like "We don't have time to argue. We will both die if we stay here any longer. Someone has to tell the world what's happened here." And then they gaze upon each other's eyes, and he's like "You run as far away as possible." with a voice that sounds like he's about to cry, and they get teary eyed because they know this might be the last time they see each other. And as the girl runs, we get to see her burst in tears. Wouldn't that have been more interesting to watch than... this?
