Lithuania's National Broadcaster made a TV for the forthcoming Independence day (11th of March) featuring Medieval warrior of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania biding farewell to his family as he rides of to war. Here's a version of it with an ancient Lithuanian polyphonic folk song. The song resembles a ritual chant rather than an ordinary song, it contains just three words - two of them being unintelligible (or maybe no longer intelligible ) formulas ritato + tatato & the third one being "Kalnuti" (meaning "ye dear hill!"), it is from Aukštaitija's (North-East Lithuanian highlands) tradition.

Old baltic religion wasn't polythetic. Balts believed in only one God, so called "Dievas/Dievs", "Diwus" in sanskirt. There was only one "Dievas". For example "Perkunas" was "Perkunas", he wasn't a god. This is why it was so easy for Balts to adopt Christianity (what was brought by a sword and fire) and it was easier for Balts to continue their old "romuva" traditions. This is also one of the reason why Balts still celebrate old pre-christian festivals and still have a pretty huge "romuva" community.

All european religions were simmilar before desert religion came. Also it's pretty hard to explain the whole "gods" thing. Old balts didn't have a plural word for "Dievas" (god). Christians who didn't understand the old baltic religion started to say that these "pagans" have more than one god. This is how the plural version of "Dievas" was created (Dievai). However "Dievas" was seen as the creator of heaven and light in old baltic religion. "Perkunas" as thunder (strength), "Gabija" as fire (warmth) etc. But they were not "gods", they had they own name. I'm not from the baltic states, but I had an interesting conversation with a Lithuanian traditionalist once and he explained me this.

Retro Brah, it would be an anachronism to claim that Balts of the old days only had one god just because there was no plural of "dievas" before. It did not have the meaning as abstract as it is today. In the folk tales Dievas has pretty much the same status and nature as Velnias and is often interchangeable with Perkūnas (some tales mention Dievas and some Perkūnas in very similar plot). Some Lithuanians whose worldview has been squeezed up by Christianity too much find it difficult not to attempt superimposing their acquired notions on Baltic mythology but those attempts aren't quite convincing. Conversion to Christianity was neither easy, nor fast and it only happened formally when Christianity gave up on really trying to alter the content of local beliefs and preoccupied itself with altering the form instead.

***** you might be surprised to hear that the singers don't know it either: the meaning of half of this ancient song's lyrics was lost throughout the ages - only the word "kalnuti" is still understandable and means "dear mountain". Based on its phonetics the song must have been created before 12-13th centuries, according to linguists.

Čia man primena Šiaurės Amerikos "indėnų" (į kabutes paėmiau, nes terminas visiškas geografinis nesusipratimas) apeigines giesmes, kuriose praktiškai nėra žodžių. Turbūt buvo svarbiau perduoti emociją, įvesti į transą negu perteikti verbalinę informaciją.

Not really. It's more about the change in Baltic culture that was caused by the Christianisation of Europe. Part of the Old knowledge has been lost, there are remaining rituals, songs, customs, divinations, the underlying meaning of which has been forgotten by some or all.

No need to thank. Because we needed support in the struggle against the Teutonic Knights, and Lithuanians too were threatened by the marauding Mongols. So Lithuania's expansion into the ruthenian lands was mostly NOT through fire and sword. The annexation was largely peaceful, for in powerful Lithuania the ruthenian rulers saw the chance of protection from the Mongols. I'm glad that you are now mostly free with your own national identity, I hope the same thing for Belarus.

Well history is not what we see in the movies, it was hard, but feats our Lithuanian kind has achieved was great, we had to sacrifice much ( Prussian and most Latvian) but they made those mistakes not us, I am honoured to be called Lithuanian, and will always be. we are great country, Latvia and Estonia also stand with us now, Poland being really bad to us but are also brothers, we are in modern age so cant just do what putin does, we stand together and if needed we will help to crush russia to their knees now without choice, we are taking over this shit country and will remind people that stalin was mass murderer and they failed in everything they did.

+Serge Kay Belarusians are slavic. Lithuanians are baltic. You aren't and never will be lithuanians. We don't want to be associated with a poor, underdeveloped, corrupted country like Belarus. The only connection we had was that we managed to control your lands for a short period of time. But that's where out relations end.

That movie is still being shown in cinemas in Latvia, so, uploading it online would rip its creators off revenue they deserved by creating such a wonderful film... They have uploaded some clips on their official fb page though: facebook.com/pg/BaltuCiltis/videos

I can't figure out what kind of sigil is on the warrior's shield. At first, at the final shot of the video, I thought it was a reference to the knight that is shown on the Lithuanian sigil. But, the knight has a sigil of two-fold cross on his shield. Strange.

You're right about it being a reference to a knight on Lithuanian coat of arms Vytis. In the past there were many variations of Vytis. Herkus Monte Šito video vaizdo medžiaga yra sukurta LRT televizijos, ne aš filmavau, todėl ir įkėliau tą video čia su užrašu: "Kovo 11-osios 25-metį švęskite kartu su LRT!", nes toks buvo pačių video gamintojų sugalvotas šūkis. LRT susuko šitą klipą specialiai savo ateinančiosios kovo 11-os dienos programos reklamai ir man atrodė, kad būtų nesąžininga perdaryti jų video kitam tikslui taip nukreipiant žiūrovų srautą nuo jų reklamos. O vis dėlto truputį perdariau ir įkėliau tą jų klipą todėl, kad man labai patiko vaizdai, bet ne jų pasirinkta muzika. Mano nuomone, LDK kario vaizdai nusipelno ir atitinkamos muzikos - senovinės karo dainos, o ne klasikinės krikščioniškos muzikos lotynų kalba. Kadangi klipą truputį perdariau, bet šūkio nekeičiau, galbūt taip liks "ir avys sveikos, ir vilkas sotus": kovo 11d. LRT gaus savo žiūrovų srautą, kurio tikėjosi kurdami šitą reklamą, o man bus smagu, kad gražūs Lietuvos istorijos vaizdai tuo pačiu populiarina gražias senovines Lietuviškas dainas, o ne kokius nors užsienio klasikos hitus. Vėliau, kai pasibaigs kovo 11d, bus galima tą anotaciją nuo šito video nuimti ir liks tiesiog gražus klipas gražiai dainai. O jei apskritai, tai nesuprantu kas jau tokio kontraversiško siūlyme Kovo 11d. žiūrėti LRT. Jei jums nepatinka jų dabartinės laidos ar politinė orientacija, galima mediatekoje rasti senų gerų filmų bei laidų :) Didelė dalis video šitame youtube kanale irgi būtent iš LRT mediatekos - bandau prikelti antram gyvenimui tuos dalykus, kurie mano akimis yra vertingi, man labai patinka tokios senos laidos kaip "Etnokultūros ratas" ir panašios.

Dear Lithuanians, I have a question to you: What do you think about Belarusians referring to the heritage of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (using Vytis on their flags etc.), which has been increasing especially in recent times? Greetings from Poland.

It's fine. It's their heritage also. The Grand Duchy was a multi-ethnic state that we were both a part of. We're happy that they're doing it. The problem comes up when their ultra-nationalists start yapping about "Belarus is real, true and only grand duchy!", etc. But that position is easy to back off with historic sources. They use a lot of cherry picking and cop-outs in a desperate attempt to illustrate that view. So in short - mostly positive, unless we're talking about that handful of ultra-nationalists who are not interested in sharing and who try to claim *all* of the GDL's history.

@@mp1335 Thank you for that detailed answer. This is very interesting. I thought that Lithuanians recognize Belarus/Belarusians only as heirs of Kievan Rus' and claim that the legacy of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania belongs solely to Lithuania.

@@INecr0 Only some ultranationalists do. Like the one that replied to my post here. Relations of both sides have some problems with that persistently loud minority. By the way, Pahonia is just as suitable of a name as Vytis(maybe unless we're taking abut the modernized versions of the symbol). It's the same in different languages, basically. The ruling families were heavily mixed. Many rulers took on Orthodoxy from what were seemingly ethnic Belarusian lands. If we can say that someone like Vytenis/Viten or Traidenis/Trojden was most likely Lithuanian, many people surrounding them were already mixed and part Ruthenian/Belarusian. Gediminas/Gedmin had a Belarusian wife. His son Olgerd/Algirdas also had a Belarusian wife. Traidenis, the pagan ruler, hired a boyar from Smolensk to teach his son old church Slavonic. There were also many boyars and other influential people of Belarusian origin. Ruski/Latin languages were official in writing old court documents and such. Lithuanian language was properly written down only in the beginning of the 16th century. I could also go on about times after the dynastic union between GDL and the Crown of Poland, or even after the Union of Lublin, but I'll save you the boredom ;) Point is, it really is heritage of both sides and when you look at historical sources it's pretty much impossible to deny.

Ko tu jaudiniesi, lietuvis tas, kuris jaučiasi Lietuvos patriotu. Pažystu ne vieną kitatautį Lietuvos patriotą ir nemažai lietuvių, kurie vemdami neapykantą ant gimtojo krašto, nė piršto nepajudino, kad joje situacija pagerėtų, Vat pastarieji ir neverti lietuvių vardo.

+Kęstas Černys Klysti apie tautybe, ji yra gylesne nei tik tik pavirsutiniska pilietybe. GI neissizadi savo vaiku vien del to kad jie ten tiki ar netiki kazka, jie vistiek yra tavo biologiskai, taspats ir tautybe.

Kindom reiskia karalyste, duchy reiskia kungaikstyste. Karalyste Lietuva buvo tik Mindaugo laikais, visais kitais kunigaikstyste
