Somebody has to tell me why, why am I watching a videos of a guy building a pond and playing with his fish?!? It almost seems silly to me. My question is why, “Why is this channel so entertaining!!! Ok, for me, I love fish. I have 9 smaller aquariums. I have loved fishing all my life, yet I live in California where it is a dry and thirsty land with no water. I love kayaks, and used to own one younger catching mostly Bass in it. So, for me, this is a beautiful dream!

The pond is looking great! My only recommendation is to leave as much of the grass on the edge of the water unmowed. That will create some habitat for insects and such to further help feed your bass and bait fish. A 2’ wide strip, even around just a portion of the shore would be beneficial

I honestly just like watching the process of you building out the pond and making changes to it. I don’t think I want to watch anyone hunt any of the wildlife there that you’ve worked so hard to establish.

With the deer, I'd recommend leaving the big doe's that have made your farm home alone. They will draw in big bucks from miles around and make the others feels safe. The bucks are looking good

For hunting, doing it as needed seems to be good. As you said Whitetails can get overpopulated quickly and cause havoc. Sometimes even if you don't want to hunt, it is the responsible thing to do in order to ensure the pond's ecosystem stays healthy for years to come!

I agree helps maintain a friendly environment for the rest of the animals and fish in the area if one gets over populated it will cause issues to others. I'd love to see you bring out a young one taking out his or her first deer I'd be something different but amazing to see considering the effort you put in these videos. Keep up the great work and what ever you decide I will support it.

The ducks are going to muck up that pond fast. You'll really need water cleaning plants along the edges, and airation (a fountain of some kind), and to treat the water with sludge and other pond chemicals (on a schedule) to keep the water clean & healthy. Also, don't forget salt licks for the deer.

As an aquarium person, I'd say you're better off just running water from the pond to the stock tank and letting it drain back into the pond. The pond's biofiltration is better than anything you could use and it keeps the water conditions(temp/PH/nitrogen) the same as the pond. I'd also add something to shade the stock tank. It'll heat up more quickly than your pond.

Yes good idea but TREAT the water of the tank because some fish might have viruses so gotta let the water rest for a week or more and treat it the first day then should be good

Deer can severely overpopulate and start to cause lots of problems. I'm not big on hunting either.

Kudos from the UK. You clearly read the comments and take on board advice from those with experience. Quality videos, and I guess we are all learning together here. I feel like I am totally invested in the long term success of this project. Things will go wrong and you will admit to mistakes, but I am confident you will get them sorted out. Agree! I say only hunt if it's needed, a too large population without something to keep it in check can cause more damage then good, nature needs a good balance! But I'm glad it's a safe haven for the wildlife

Your channel is unique for ALL the good that you have accomplished and continue to do. THANK You! Once you start adding in hunting, you will change the dynamics on multiple layers. Besides, there are more than enough channels that show hunting. With that said, YES, to keeping to the filming of wildlife, NO to the hunting!

As an Idahoan who witnessed our very first case of CWD just a few months back, you should definitely think about getting that herd thinned out! CWD is spreading fast through the country and large herds are responsible. Too many deer in such a small area is an equation for disaster if CWD does get into your county.

Its been running threw the country for years. Cwd travels threw infected water ways. Usually streams carry it to other areas from heavy rains.

@@jheiny1231 CWD spreads between animals through body fluids like feces, saliva, blood, or urine, either through direct contact or indirectly through environmental contamination of soil, food or water. It’s proven to spread faster in densely populated groups of deer. When our first case of CWD hit in Idaho the state opened an emergency season to thin herds and get a better understanding of how far it had already spread

In response to hunting there: i think you should look into having a biologist/ecologist look at your property and populations to inform what and how much to hunt. It would be pretty cool to see. Maybe just bow hunting to avoid conditioning the animals to be scared as much

The pond is looking really nice! Will be cool seeing how the bass will behave and how you keep developing it. Remember to wear a life jacket when you're out in the little kayak! Even if you got full control, in the middle of the night if you fall in or get tangled in LED light cables or whatever it might make the difference. Its so cheap and easy so I strongly recommend it.

@BamaBass I have been part of tag and release rainbow trout before. Used clove oil in water to sedate them, put the tag in and release. Super easy and no chemicals to worry about. Ratios available online. Second, lots of organizations would love to be able to bring a kid or a vet hunting there. Great deer management practices include hunting and managing your herd.

I've been following your channel since you dug the hole. Love it. Keep sharing the adventure. As a land owner and hunter, I have found great information at the KZfaq channel for the Mississippi State Deer Lab. Herd management is important and necessary. In your shoes, I would estimate the herd size and develop a harvest plan. There are professionals that can do that for you as well. Who gets to hunt... I'd probably narrow it down to veterans, single mom families, and otherwise challenged individuals... and of course some first timers. Providing that experience for those people will enrich your life. It has mine.

What I appreciate most about this series is your commitment to being a responsible steward for the land and animals in your care. Sometimes being a good steward means keeping populations in check, so I'd say a hunt could certainly be a healthy thing for the deer population, especially if there are no natural predators doing the job. Alternatively, cutting back on the feed a bit may be a more passive way to keep the population under control.

I love how far the pond has come! Also, WEEK 9 of asking to name 2 of the bass Scylla and Charybdis. They were the monsters that guarded the straight in The Odyssey. Also I wouldn’t hunt this year, your bucks are right at that size where another year would do them excellent. I would suggest holding off for another year to allow them to mature

Honestly if he has the ability to completely control his deer population, id leave them alone for a couple years, then he can shoot 5.5, 6.5yr old deer instead of a young 3.5yr old

Hunting is extremely necessary in a population like this, his herd is already growing greatly & will continue to with the amount of feed he provides and safety, without hunting to balance it, the ecosystem will become very unbalanced and also greatly increase the likelihood of disease hitting his herd

Great video! The audio of the frogs and crickets is great. I'd love to hear more of the sounds around the pond! And absolutely YES to the hunt. Maybe do bow or muzzle-load for subscribers too? I wonder if the foxes move with the deer herd because the deer will spook rodents out of their hiding spots

@@martingomez8142 They can sometimes get too large for bass to consume, as they are fast growing and repopulate quickly. In addition, they bottom forage and can potentially eat eggs, bass eggs for example. Due to their fast reproduction and growth, they can populate faster and out compete bass for food, nesting areas, and alter surrounding ecosystem. Tip of the trade: Use clove oil as a anesthetic for the bass when tagging. Much more cost effective option and works very well. Also it's all natural. Awesome videos keep it up!

Listen I'm a avid hunter, and think it would be awesome to manage your deer a little. However I wouldn't mess with it unless they become a real problem. Deer are smart and if you allow a hunt or two, make sure it's done as far away as possible from the areas you like to feed, you have to find out where they are coming and going from the property at you don't want them to start thinking your property is dangerous, they will become very elusive. I've had that problem on my own land. I had a very large herd and took out 3 of them out of 20-25 and did not hardly see them again for almost a whole year. 7 years later, I still never see them as a whole group anymore, only 5-6 at a time.

I think it is a good idea to manage your wildlife. Like a crop. Limited harvest of specific deer or wild pigs or Ducks or Geese is good for the overall heath of the ecosystem. This can often be done in a way that creates an income that then can be used to maintain and enhance the system. Beautiful spaces like the one you are creating tend only exist as long as they paid for themselves,

Great to see the wildlife developing without hunting pressure.. Pretty unique these days. The deer populations do fine in national parks--many without serious predators!

@@damonbryan7232 Actually, not true. Wildlife populations are not thinned in national parks. The only exception I know of is the Bison management program at Yellowstone.

@@jago76 you might want to do a little research-many national parks do thin the deer herds to protect the ecosystem. A quick google search will list dozens of such operations in just the past few years.

I have no problem with food hunting over feed. But I do with trophy hunting. I think you need to earn a trophy not go pay 5 grand just to set in a stand until they release the deer from the trailer. And yes some places do that.

A good management hunt would be awesome for the herd. Take out some of the smaller bucks or cull bucks and a few does for meat. Get with a biologist and they can give you a report based on number of deer on how many need to be taken. Stay safe for this coming hurricane even though it looks to be headed to FL.

You should let some people that follow you and watch your video come to your place and hunt and fish. At least 2 deer maybe one buck and one doe. The kayak was so cool. For the hunt. You pick someone and hunt at our own risk. Those that hunt (most) have a hunter safety card by what state they reside. You can hold some to that legally with proof of card.
