When I found this channel when he posted the 2nd overall episode, I figured there was nothing to it. I'm so hooked at this point and fascinated by the accomplishment, the amount of time/money involved, and the maintenance. The amount of diverse wildlife is amazing, and the birds are spectacular. Best channel I just happened by and always looking for that next episode! The prawns are crazy as well and never heard of the ones he's talking about, but it makes total sense to have that breed since they do not burrow. They will be fine food for the big bass.

Honest question. Is this actual nature conservation though? It is a not a naturally fed pod that would die out quickly without human maintenance. It seems more like a personal fishing pond. Nothing wrong with that.

@kratosdertoten4035
@kratosdertoten4035 Жыл бұрын
@@crazkurtz While it is true that the pond is human maintained, if people hadn't moved in then this area would likely still host many ponds; some small and seasonal and some large that last all year round. However with people moving in those ponds have disappeared and the natural predators have moved on. With this maintained pond it can reintroduce some of those predators into the ecosystem and the finished product would be a self-sustaining ecosystem with a human to make sure it stays in balance all year long. Admirable in my opinion.
@bradleywoods3742
@bradleywoods3742 Жыл бұрын
This is not nature conservation... the entire ecosystem is built on introduced, overpopulated fish which feed on non-native prawns which can only survive through constant reintroduction and artificial feeding through pellets. Which part of nature does this fit into?

I think your pawn project is an excellent idea, its also going to make a great learning experience for you. Keep a coyote decoy by your pawn pond to scare herons and predatory water birds. Prawns are valuable and very tasty, you don't want them all gobbled up before you get a chance to harvest. Laser pointers also terrify birds as well, they do work.

I know of a few ponds and small lakes in Iowa, USA, that has some floating plant islands specifically to let bait fish hide from the bass. Great spots to fish around for decent bass and pike. I've even seen someone catch a 10 pound channel catfish on a Rapala lure in broad daylight near one of those islands

@@mariatorres9789 they've talked about putting plants in but they need to be extremely careful to pick species of plant that won't propagate too quickly and overgrow everything. If you're not careful and you get uncontrollable duckweed or lily pads, the growth can get so thick that it chokes off the light and kills everything in the pond including the fish.

KZfaq algorithm for the win! Super interesting! When I was a little boy my dad got onto a conversation kick and started improving the "waste ground" on our farm. Land that was either too rough or infertile to be profitable, but not practical for grazing. He started out with cedar wind breaks, then we'd plant some food plots with whatever was leftover from planting feed in the spring. Then he opened up some springs and created reliable water sources. Over the years these became wildlife magnets for all kinds of critters here in western Kansas. We even had a mamma mountain lion raise 4 kittens in one of the larger areas one year. It's was funny because when I told the Kansas department of wildlife and parks about it they looked me straight in the eye and called me a liar. When I showed them photographic evidence they got really excited and wanted to know where this was exactly. I told them its off limits and the cats were under my protection. These animals were surrounded by farms and cattle, but we've never had a single head of livestock harmed in the entire region. To this day the Wildlife and Parks say there's never been evidence of a breeding population of mountain lion's in the state.

@@ryanlee6147 ...I think it shows a mindset difference between a fish in the wild and a tank fish. Moby knows his meals are coming and there is no competition whatsoever. He likes his baitfish. Give him something else and he plays with his food, then becomes disinterested.

I think it depends on the type of crayfish (some do and some don't dig holes) but it's probably for the best you went with the prawns so you don't introduce an invasive species by accident to your area. Also, you might encourage ducks to nest in that duck house if you put some straw in it.

I lived in neighborhood that had a 5 acre pond that was shared between 9 of the houses in the subdivision. It had been there for 20 years before the subdivision was built. Well established with big bass. The dam became compromised and had to be repaired which meant the pond had to be drained. 😢 Oh, but the Crappie we netted out were as big as a man's foot. Hundreds of them. It the Catfish? Omg. What a fish fry we had. Our small group of about 3 of the 9 neighbors nursed that pond back to a thriving ecosystem. The pond is fed all four ways via spring, creek, rain and runoff so it took less than a year to fill back up. Amazing. We introduced some fresh bass and catfish along with blue gills. We drained it from 5 acres to a mud puddle three feet deep 10 feet wide and 50 yards long. We were catching bass well over 12" and hand size blue gill within 2 years of draining it. 5 lb Female was caught last week on her bed. It was great to be part of it. So connected with the earth at that time. Watching all the fish spawn was amazing. More than once did i catch the hatching of a nest the thousands of tiny hatchlings streaming out of a hole like delicate slow motion silly string as the big momma battle ship bass hovers off shore with her bucket mouth flexing. You guys have an awesome thing going on here. You're life will be richly rewarded every day. Happy for y'all!

I catch them in my backyard river in Australian ❤ also love the videos keep on going👍 Edit: you might need a bit more of the prawns later down the line because the bass will destroy them and they won't breed, you also sould get some abit older so they don't get eaten by bait fish, in Australia we use them to catch barramundi so the bass will eat all of them because there aggressive 😊

Yes agreed - they look a lot like Australian northern freshwater prawns - sometimes called 'Charlies' by the locals in the Northern Territory. They can grow to an enormous size - I have seen them up to 60cm (two feet) long, including the claws. Very good eating, especially the smaller ones, but need to be boiled in slaty water.

You should think about possibly putting some type of net over the bait pond so the wild life doesn't wipe out all the prawns! Maybe it could be a roll out and in contraption like a pool cover which could be easy on and off when you need to do things to it.
