Great Video. Its been many years since I was stationed in Pearl Harbor in the early eighties. While assigned to the 5th Heavy Boat Company on Ford Island, I operated 130 foot army ships and our usual missions were delivering equipment and cargo to the Big Island 125 Nautical miles away to the east. During the three years there I logged over 700 days underway and invariably, I used 4 rigs at the same time. 2, 9 aughts and 1, 10 aught and 1, 14 aught. I normally used a cona head or weighted steel head with large plastic squids about 14 inches long. The colors varied. My favorite were purple and pink and several colors availble in tackle shops on Oahu. During that 3 year period I literally caught hundreds of pelagic fish. Most were Wahoo (yes your correct) or ONO. and Bullhead Dauphin or Mahi Mahi. It was the occassional Blackfin Tuna or Marlin that spiced up the adventures. Of the many wahoo I caught only a couple were as big as the one you caught on this video. Most were the 25 to 35 pound class. On one late evening, while heading west from Molokai to Oahu, I hooked a monster Wahoo. luckily I caught it on my 14 aught Penn. It weighed 73 pounds and I guess nearly 6 feet. It was enormous and the 14 man crew and I shared a long of delicious meat. It was comical seeing me leave my ship after a couple day trip to the big island and on the back of my moped I had a 4 foot fish strapped on the back. My wife and kids were always thrilled. Well, over 40 years later, retired from the military, I love to reminiss my fishing adventures in Hawaii. Your videos are a blessing. You are clearly a good fisherman. Very knowledgeable of all the ins and outs of catching Saltwater fish. Hope the pier gets fixed this upcoming winter so I can get back out there catching the kings and spanish and all the other great fish here on our Gulf Coast. Happy for you. Love the videos. Respectfully, Ole Sarge Frank

Big thumbs up. The fuel alone to get out there, fish around, and back had to be around 40-50 gallons of fuel. Recreational fuel is around $5.50 per gallon. Over $200 just in fuel. Guy is really awesome.

Man that wahoo is a once in a lifetime catch, it's amazing that it was your first wahoo and was that size! I also totally respect all the ways you prepared it, wahoo is one of the finest eating fishes there is, barring absolutely none - it is literally that damn good ! Good on you for sharing some with other families as well, especially considering how truly good eating it is ,there just is no way it can be cooked that it is not good ! And on top of all that , the wahoo is one of the fightinest, runningest, pullingest fish out there always a battle to catch one!

Steven, if you keep trolling ballyhoo on that Southwest Edge/Nipple area, you will eventually find yourself fighting a white, or even a blue, marlin! Now THAT'S a video I'd like to see!!! Congrats on the big hoo. That is a trophy on any size boat, much less a 24' bay boat.

I've run a flounder boat my whole adult life. The shallow flats are full of ballyhoo in the summer months, and you can get all the fresh ones you want. This may be hard to believe, but we catch a LOT of large speckled trout on ballyhoo the size of the one you were using, or even larger. If you know anyone with a flounder boat, they can use a long-handled landing net to take them under their flounder lights. You have to net them from the front - you'll never catch one from the tail end. Fresh ones are much more effective than older frozen ones. Pretty much everything offshore loves them. I usually just put a single hook up from the bottom, and through their bony head. But you do have to make sure the beak isn't so long that it touches the leader or the will definitely spin. (You're right - they have to pull straight.) The gamefish seem to know that they have to come at them from the front, so that singel hook is enough. If you ever come across a school of dorado, that single hook rig is effective and quick. It's not unusual to catch two or three on a single ballyhoo, because the bone in their head is so tough. Here in Texas, we have to go pretty far offshore to find 'hoo, so I have to admit that I'm more than a little jealous of that.

My best mahi-mahi was a bull 58.5" long and 30 lbs caught in St Thomas, USVI back in the late 90s. I have lived near Pittsburgh for the last 24 years of my life, but I spent my teenage years in Tampa, Florida. I never caught any dolphin in Florida, but I have caught cobia, many different snapper, quite a few blacktip sharks, amberjack, jack cravelle, blackfin tuna, snook, redfish, spadefish, spanish macks, king macks, tarpon, sailfish (my favorite fish), a couple big blue marlins in Key West, sheepshead, multiple crab, and even bull shark. That's what I love about saltwater fishing, you can target whatever you want, but you never know what you're going to catch.
