Yes, bamboo drifting is real. It's a Chinese folk skill that involves balancing on a single bamboo pole while performing dance moves or racing against others. The practice originated in Guizhou Province's Chishui River basin as a way for loggers to transport lumber, but has since become more modern. In 2021, bamboo drifting was listed as China's national intangible cultural heritage.

Not everyone in china does it but this is, or was a thing, in southern china because it’s geography was mainly composed of rivers and streams, so people, goods, trade routes, and life in general happened around and on these bodies of water. And from that you can naturally piece out why bamboo drifting came about there. It’s not done anymore for daily life nowadays, but it is still practiced for tourist attraction.

@frofrofrofro900Ай бұрын
But why this? Why not use boats?
@plumbum715Ай бұрын
@@frofrofrofro900 i dont exactly know why, but i can deduct from the fact that the streams that they pass through often get narrow too, either that or they rely on the water stream passage ways so much that overcrowding becomes a problem if everyone used big boats, or both. And maybe due to convenience too since bamboo is highly abundant in that place and they saw how they could make use of the cheap renewable resource more. Edit: they do use boats. But i guess the bamboo drifting came about for convenience. One scenario i can think of is that i want to pass through the streams but i don’t really have much to carry on me so it would be such a hassle to setup my boat or exert effort on a bigger vehicle, so since ill only be carrying my person and nothing else, ill see its convenient to jst jump on a banboo and drift away. (I think so because i could relate as i used to live in an island where there were a few narrow streams inland and it was a passage route for people so we used a lotta boats. If i get too lazy ill just use a flimsy narrow canoe instead of a boat)

how was this never shown as a scene on any donghua, movies or series?? would've been a good scene..

The level of skill to make that first jump and land on a thin branch while it's wobbling in the water without it rotating or you falling... Is just unbelievably unbelievable

As a Chinese I can confirm, people don't use boats there. What's takes other boats hours. This bamboo is special bamboo. It's green, unlike other bamboo. It can cover a journey of hours within minutes.

As an Asian who does not live in China, I can confirm that they dont have boats they just use bamboo to cross rivers. They can have up to 20 passengers in 1 bamboo and when the journey is very long they also sleep in the bamboo while travelling.
