Bamboo artist, Jiro Yonezawa, shows how to prepare bamboo for weaving. Follow him step-by-step from harvesting the bamboo to making finished strips.

You have to stand back in awe, when you realize he is making an admirable effort to present this all in English for the whole world to see. He is not just teaching his japanese friends, he is sharing the secrets with the world.

One of those KZfaq finds that makes you feel like you've discovered something very special. Few people take the time to explain the intricacies of their craft the way this man has. Such a pleasure to watch. The fact that I have a yard surrounded by bamboo is a bonus.

I wholeheartedly concur! Never got the chance to visit a Bamboo forest while in Japan, but I know I could sit there for hours, gathering the energy to create!

Right! And I also appreciate that English comments have been pronounced so clearly, correctly, and nicely, so I could understand every word and statement. I used to work with Japanese colleagues for a while and know how difficult communication in English could be. I love bamboo, by the way! At that time, I took a few bamboo sticks out of Japan to show them to kinds, those who never saw them before. 🙂

I am a camper and I needed a professional knife for outdoor multi works. I had seen this knife on Almazan Knives and it looked attractive. The handle is a very smooth blade and is very sharp. I have been using this knife for two years and I still don't have any issues. The blade is the same sharp as the first day. Thanks to Almazan Knives, great buying.

No screaming, whining electrical power tools. No huge conveyor machines. Just the craftsman, his hand tools and his materials. I find the idea incredibly attractive. Perhaps a local elderly musician playing a flute in the yard, just outside.

It is indeed attractive. But making it with more precise machining is much more faster and efficient. And nowadays people value the result and cheaper price more than the process. It's not a bad thing, it's just true.

Elwood Scott there's not many nowadays because it'll take him a week to make a basket. imagine trying to do baskets for a modern city? there's a reason machines are here.

You get what you pay for. I see beautiful fiber and basket weaving in local clubs in my area of the US. No one is willing to pay appropriately for them, however, so it remains a hobby and labor of love for craftsmen. In Japan people appreciate and WILL PAY FOR objects done in the time-consuming and painstaking traditional manner. Here in the US, it's just seen as a quirky hobby. Folks will pay you $2 for your basket. So why make, much less sell?

Yonezawa-sensei, thanks for the step by step instructions. I was walking with friends through the Forest and we came across an old bamboo oasis. I believe it was for harvesting the baby bamboo shoot’s. Some shoots were the size of elephant’s legs. Amazing place with even an old workers hut. The sounds in a bamboo forest are unique.

I have always been fascinated by how many things can be made from bamboo. It was particularly interesting to see how this prep is done. I have no local source for bamboo or I would likely try to learn something more about this craft. I can, however, make all of those tools myself because I am a blacksmith, so if I ever do find a source, I will be able to give it a go.

I started my trade as blacksmith but referred to welder later Now I started to work with bamboo _ i saved some clumps from the land behind my home and started to grow it. I dont have an anvil or any forging tools but Ill set to start making some of the basics to work in bamboo.

You are an artisan to be looked up to, your skill with English language is only exceeded by your skill with bamboo. I live in the land of dingoes and currently have many species of clumping bamboo and have fallen in love with this plant. Four of the species are large timber bamboos and the rest smaller including Gracilis or weavers bamboo. I will put your video to good use, thank you very much

There is plenty of bamboo growing round subdivsions in the U.S. and people are ususally happy if you come cut some. We need to be more into hand making things. He could be in any century that has metal working. How beautiful are these baskets and 100% compostable - although you would never let it be compost - you'd keep it forever.

Brilliant video. Very, very well done. You didn't move forward too quickly, giving the viewer time to actually processes it. The camera angles showing correct and incorrect versions was really helpful

Thanks Jiro. Hawaii here. Am planning to make some baskets and some bundled drum sticks, using 7 pieces (each a bit smaller diameter than a choptick), bundled together with strong twine.

I wish I had someone like you to teach me such skills when I was young but am happy to have found your video as I am always open to learning new things. Your calm voice instills patience and confidence. Learning how to use your hands and basic hand tools intelligently is the foundation on which craftsmanship is built. You use such simple tools and take advantage of bamboo’s intrinsic structure to achieve an amazing range of products. I have been curious about using bamboo to build things. There is so much skill you exhibit in this video I could watch it many times and learn more each time. Thank you for sharing this video.

Such a wonderful craft. This video shows the wonderful artistry that goes into the bamboo craft here in Japan. Most amazing is how bamboo pieces even today have such an amazing contemporary feel. There are many different forms of bamboo weaving as well. Suruga bamboo weaving is one that comes to mind, some can be seen here (alfanselect.com). Deceptively simple in form but can take years to master and uses even much thinner bamboo strips to weave. Great video and beautiful work.

Thank you for a learning experience working with bamboo. I am a broom maker in Hawaii and have been making brooms for the past 24 years. My broom handle is yellow bamboo and the bristles are the mid rib (Ni au) of the coconut leaves. And I also custom make bamboo Walking Sticks. After watching this video you have shown me some new techniques on working with bamboo and how important your tools play a big part in your craftsmanship. Your English is very good and made it very easy to understand your teaching. Aloha and Mahalo

Down the road from me is 2/3 different kinds of bamboo growing wild along the main road. I have no idea what it is, but I know if not stripped correctly it can sure bite you with long thin splints that can be very pain full if left in. I've used bamboo in the past as garden things but never for what this chap is showing. Worth knowing this and some day if I ever run out of things to do I know what my next project can be. I live out in the country of NZ, lots of privacy where I am. Thank you for sharing your tricks of your trade.
