The old Romanian AK's are underrated for sure I picked up a lightly used SAR-1 last year for $399 at a local gun shop they had marked as an SKS

I’d say ban era AKs are worth it sometimes. It depends on how much someone wants to put into it to de-ban it. Obviously different models require different levels of work and money. However, they are all quality imports, so the bones of the rifle are good.

I recently found a MAK90 at a local Gunshop/Pawn Shop for a steal, made in 92 mint rifles with original box and sling. I was talking to the shop owner he said the daughter of the guy sold it after he passed away with a bunch of other guns. I got lucky and the receiver was not slant cut so all I had to do was adapt some AKM furniture with a Dremel. It did not come with a threaded barrel so that's my next step.

I remember those very well! I bought several chinese MAK90’s with milled receivers for $225 and 2 MAK’s stamped with folding stock receivers for $189. I bought also the Chinese folding stocks at the same time. Milled guns were intended to be Legion series made at factory 386 where Legions were made. Just wanted to share. Thanks again for a great video

Those sorts of stocks are actually pretty neat - while they look a bit silly on firearms like an AK or AR they're about as close to a pistol grip and decent shoulder stock as you can get.

For my FEG made SA85ms, yes, it was worth it. Why? The bones are good and one doesn't have to worry about anything structural happening. I sent two of my builds to Historic preservation, Mario Freire and with AK63 parts and 922 upgrades, he made it a pre-ban SA85m AK63. The other was converted also with no issues.

I had an Egyptian/Chinese Frankenstein. The gun was very well used and ran like a well broken in rifle. However I couldn’t zero it and couldn’t change the stock without welding. It would have been too much to put into the gun for what it was worth so I sold it and bought a GF3. My son found a nice one with a milled receiver. His is just overall a nicer gun so we’re keeping that one and will upgrade it over time.

I got a ban Mak90 a few years ago from a guy that bought a stack of them in the 90’s and just let them sit in a closet till the time was right. They were all pristine condition too. Shoots just great but my god the thumb hole stock is as ergonomic as a 2x4. Swapped out the furniture and need to fix the bayonet lug, muzzle thread, and straighten out the front sight. Looking forward to when I finally get around to undoing it 😂

Love my romy SAR1, no idea what it’s worth now but bought it EARLY March of 2020 before everything went to shit. Best part is Noo one wanted it. Was still there on the end of day 3 of a massive gun show. It was a PA show right near the NJ boarder & the seller had stacks of wasrs, on the bottom he had my sar1 w/ a sign stating it was “NJ legal”. For those that don’t know the 94 AWB never expired here in NJ so while somthing like a SAR1 is a total unicorn for me being a NJ resident & AK collector, most saw “NJ legal” & assumed it must be some super lame gun. Picked it up for $800 and is Deff my favorite gun in my collection. The one I’d take it I could only have 1

I have a WUN-1 from Century. The quality is better than some of the Chinese post ban I have own in the past. Yes China had some bad quality firearms. Back in the later 1990s or 2000 . Classic firearms had new Wum-1 parts kit with head space barrel. I purchase two kits for $189.00 each. I fix the thumbhole stock by reshape the grip for my hands ,at the trigger keeping the look of the thumbhole stock. There is a video that show how you can weld and fix the receiver half moon cut. Also I fire a Wum-2 in 5.45x39. That was a sweet shooting gun with no Muzzle brake or compensator. Just a welded nut on the end. of the barrel.The quality I seen on all the Wum riflers was very good,

I’ve always been a fan of the ‘90s post ban thumbhole stock AKs since a lot of them are very nice imports. I actually like the Norinco thumbhole stocks like the one on my BWK-92 because it is made out of the good quality Chu wood and it’s actually a very comfortable stock as it has a nice and thick grip, a solid cheek weld, and the rubber butt pad on it is very comfortable to have against your shoulder. My only gripe about the stock is the fact that it is a 2lb solid block of wood. It adds some weight to the rifle, though I don’t mind it too much because I have a decent amount of upper body strength. I may eventually get a Chinese pistol grip and stock on it because I prefer the aesthetic a little more and all of my AKs are unconverted imports.

I have two Arsenal USA Las Vegas AK’s. One is a SA-M7 sub 100 serial number. The other is a sub 500 serial number SA-M5S. I have not changed anything. The pinned and welded muzzle brakes seem to be very effective. No bayonet lug but who cares. For up close I have my Glock 17. I am running an Ultimak on the SA-M7. I kept the original gas tube. My big fear is doing a Bubba on these guns. The SA-M7 is a sub-MOA rifle. I have a Leupold Pistol scope for the Sam-7 but run a red dot. How collectible are these early ban guns? The furniture appears to be identical to latest imports. The SA-M7 came with a letter signed by all Bulgarian trained gunsmiths who worked on the gun. I think that is pretty cool.

I personally dont see the reason to spend outrageous amounts of money to get "pre ban" or "ban era" stuff. I dont see how that gives it any inherent value. I have to say that i never really disliked the thumb hole stock. Should never be forced to have it, but the thumb hole stock, especially the one you have, looks kinda cool. Reminds me of the vintorez. I think thats what its called. The integrally suppressed gun that takes the 9x39. Looks like a chopped down Dragunov.

I have been into AKs going back to 1988. I have owned more variety of AKs and shot more cheap AK ammo than most ever will in their lifetime. The thing killing the AK world today is lack of available and affordable ammo for working class people. That's what attracted people to this particular gun genre to begin with. The AK market today is for wealthy dilettantes and Unknowning wannabe East bloc larpers. PSA promised ammo 2 years ago, where is it?

If you were wanting a regular wood stock, there was a company called ironwood designs that made one but I believe they are no longer in business anymore, but you might be able to find some around. One other thing is if you’re wanting to put a 1913 rail adapter on the DFO adapter, you’ll have to cut the rear tang short, or off completely. I’m thinking about doing that myself.
@TheDiameter

@@chriscarnes87 Yeah I was considering buying from ironwood but the owner died before I pulled the trigger. I still kick myself to this day over that. Honestly I’m not sure my order would’ve been completed in time even if I had but either way it’s a tragedy for the family and a major loss to the community. I’m not interested in making any permanent modification to a now banned gun, there value only goes up from here. I’ll definitely pursue the desert Fox route, thanks again!
