Siobhan was trully the real deal! Magnetic! She had so much character. I wish she had never leave. That song was so unique when it was released. As a trio they were fabulous. They needed to be all together to get that vocal sound quality. Unforgettable!

@@bricefleckenstein9666 You can think what you want. Look for other performances from other bands (Alison Moyet, The B-52's, The Style Council, etc.) on Channel 4's Switch in 1983. All of them have pre-recorded instrumentals, backing vocals, instrumentals, but LIVE vocals. This show ALWAYS had live vocals (unlike Top of the Pops and others). The main vocals here in "Cruel Summer" are flawed and not multilayered, unlike the recorded version. Hear it again.

Really cool. It's the first time, as many here, that I see a real live performance of the original trio. What a brilliant song! And the interpretation also. They are great! And what a brilliant trio, they were unique. Like many here, I also regret Siobhan left the formation. She was pivotal, and they were never the same. She was probably annoyed with the Stock Aitken Waterman musical direction. The lyrics of their songs were really unique as well as their music. With SAW, things changed a bit. they sounded like others, even though I loved the WoW era.

There’s something so shambolic about early Bananarama that’s actually perfection. And I suspect the reason for 40 years in a cut throat industry. It feels they didn’t take it seriously. But the music was too good, and the legacy too iconic, that it would be silly to see them as a joke. Or not to be taken seriously. Love the live vocals here, I’ve heard very little early days lives.

A very English School Girl feel. It set them apart….that and their ‘And What?’ attitudes. They were known in the UK music industry as ‘Pirhanarama’ and ‘Bananadrama’ for their take no prisoners attitude. Quite simply they didn’t take any shit from the men who pretty much ran the music industry in the 80s. They had their own opinions and always got their own way and the male music execs were terrified of them.

Great performance of one of my favorite Bananarama songs I love Bananarama but only as the original lineup I didn't like them as a duo or when they replaced Siobhan with Jacque she was horrible
@kiwibelt2 жыл бұрын
Respectfully I disagree. When Jacquie joined, the sound did change a little. She was clearly the superior vocalist of the three but even though they attempted to make it a three-way blend you could always hear Jacquies voice in the mix. Style wise she was awesome! She had that cool 1950s jazz-club-chick Vibe about her. Almost a ‘don’t give a fuck’ attitude (which actually turned out to be quite accurate during their world tour in ‘89 - But that’s another story. That attitude manifested itself after she realised she would never be accepted as a contributor to the artistic direction or the management of the band. She was simply a paid employee, hired to be tacked onto the end to retain the illusion of a three-piece band.) in my opinion there are three very distinctive timelines to the Bananas: Put quite simply it is the Siobhan period, the Jacquie period and the Duo period which endures to this day. Each incarnation has its own valid points and merits, and everyone is entitled to their own favourite timeline for Bananarama. For me, it was the Jacquie years. Absolutely loved the music they made during this period as well…..post SAW.

l can't see how this can possibly be LIVE singing...it's impossible. They'd have to have and travel with a non finished tape...(no compact discs existed back then)...the tape would be completely without vocals, so then...you want me to believe that THEY had 2 Tapes that they traveled with performing from. One finished, just like everyone has...and...uh...get this...? a special unfinished version with only backing vocals that they used in the rare instances when they FELT like singing live...then the show and stage manager would have to set up 3 microphones connected into the PA system and mix the vocals on the spot in synch with the tape that the girls brought with them...I say BULL, BULL, BULL...They were lip synching and you know it...none of their lips are in synch
@ohnoitisnathan198 жыл бұрын
+Mikey Mumbles Do you have ears? Listen to this in comparison to the (full) studio version. The vocals are different. By your reasoning, they wouldn't have been able to pre-record the 'live' vocal to lip sync this performance to either, if they couldn't produce an instrumental track to actually sing live to. Sure, they didn't often sing live on TV performances, but there are a few other live vocal performances from this era, e.g. the 'Robert De Niro's Waiting' performance on The Tube where they experience bad mic feedback - watch it here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hMuHn7t03rXKf3U.html . Also, I've uploaded 2 live vocal performances of 'It Ain't What You Do' on this channel.
@mikeymumblesreal8 жыл бұрын
I understand that they can travel with an unfinished tape and possibly use it...perhaps it's the disbelief that a staff could arrange to play it and hook up the three mics to feature them live. Still, thanks for your input and it's a fantastic song. I concede to your point, kind gentleman.

It was the norm and more often than not mandated by the broadcasters because of costs, plus licensing and music union rules too add. When an artist mimed to their track or backing track, studio personnel involved in that recording, musicians, backing vocalists etc., many of whom were music union members, got paid a fee for their work being performed/broadcast.
