I don’t even have to watch the video before I smack that like button as everything you do, I love. I have been watching videos on the freeze drying... it is on my wish list. But saving up for it... no debt here. I like and appreciate so much that you explain the scientific process in layman’s terms. Good to know as well that freeze dried stores longer than dehydrated. I did not know that. Thank you so much. P.S. looking forward to the root beer video.

My favorite dehydrated treat is ginger banana! I squeeze the juice out of some fresh shredded ginger root into a big bowl, add the chopped banana slices and toss them around. I let them sit for a couple of hours at least, or overnight if i want them extra hot and spicy. Then i dehydrate as usual. They end up a little slimy and a.bit messy when you lay them out on the trays. They take a little longer and sometimes are a bit darker but they are delicious!!! Like candy! 😋

I am so thankful for all your factual and insightful teaching! I grew up with my dear Grandmother in our home - even after I was married and had my own young family. Having gone through the Great Depression, she imparted the values of personal independence and food security along with a few of the basic skills. We are now in our own elder years and able to focus on this important investment. Unfortunately, I feel as if most everything I knew about meal prep and preservation has to be re learned from a low to no carbohydrate skill set as hubby was recently with diagnosed Type II diabetes. I've learned all kinds of new baking with alternative flours, sugars, and fiber etc. Now I'm struggling to learn how to store items like these that are higher fat and don't freeze dry well long term. 🤷🏼‍♀️💕

Just a thought…I have found that the easiest way to lift dehydrated bananas off the wire shelf’s that I have is to turn the shelf over a sheet pan. Then, I use a table knife to poke each one. It doesn’t work with larger produce like apples. I just pull them off, using a spoon if they are stuck too tightly. I am with you! I can’t eat just one, either! 😁. Blessings to all!!!

Something interesting I read in one of my canning books. Said to freeze green beans first after branching then put in regular dehydrator. Well tried it! Amazing the difference. They were more the size and shape as before drying crispy I could bit into them without breaking a tooth, they powdered in my mouth. Haven't tried anything else as just used the last of beans before fall freeze last year. Will. Try again with more things as they come on. Kinda like freeze drying?

Love the freeze dried bananas. One way to increase the amount you can process when freeze drying is to slice the banana leaving it together like still whole and run a wooden skewer (you can buy at most dollar stores) through it then gently separate them on the skewer. Now you can fit 4-6 bananas on each tray depending on the size freeze dryer you have.

I have never stored them in the freezer. We just vacuum seal them.

Oh my dog loves banana but I don’t give her a lot because it’s so sweet. I don’t eat them because I’m on keto. I’ll pick some up for her and dehydrate them.

Can you still put the Bananas that were hydrated in a pint jar and seal it up with a food vaccum sealer?

you mentioned mylar bags will last years longer, is that the case for most dehydrated foods?

Generally, yes. Vacuum sealing also works well for dehydrated foods.

Even dipped they go brown. When I dehydrate them in rhe airfryer at 130° they don't brown as much as my set temperature 165° dehydrator.

If you vacuum seal the dehydrated bananas, in a jar or bag, how long can you keep them on the shelf?
@RoseRedHomestead
@RoseRedHomestead 3 жыл бұрын
They will easily be good for a year. Longer, if you place the bag in the freezer. Great question!

We have a Magic Mill. Ours is old. I love the new ones--more trays and they are made from stainless steel mesh and not plastic like ours. Excalibur is also a good brand.

When I spoke to a representative at harvest right I did in fact ask them if I had to freeze foods first and they said no.
@RoseRedHomestead
@RoseRedHomestead 3 жыл бұрын
No, it is not required. We do it because it reduces the processing time. Lots of people on the channel I follow do it, so we started doing it as well. I've been tracking the processing time for various foods, and it often saves 3-4 hourts.

How about blackberries, mangoes, oranges, kiwi, pomegranits/seeds, any fruit not to dehydrate?

I only tasted freeze dried ice cream from Dicks Sporting store in the camping department. I did not liked it. It tasted like eating dry crumbs. Powder. I have made dehydrated banana chips with my Excalibur dehydrator. And also dehydrated strawberries, and frozen mixed veggies. I have vacuum sealed them using my gamesilver Foodsaver in mason jars.

My bananas darken much more than that in my dehydrator. Is it a temperature thing? I've tried 140 and 145 degrees F.
@RoseRedHomestead
@RoseRedHomestead 2 жыл бұрын
I probably use about 150-160 degrees for bananas. But I am not sure if that is the answer. I can tell you that the color doesn't bother me, ever, even if they were darker so long as they are properly dehydrated.

I really disliked the Skittles I freeze dried, but some people just love them. I make the sacrifice, like you do, and eat the misshapen ones. I think I read that this is a requirement, not an option. Can't cite my source on this ;) Any thoughts on keeping bananas from sticking to the freeze dryer pans?

Darla J, if you don't have silicone mats to fit your freeze dryer pans, use parchment paper. It works like a charm. And, for frugal types like myself, parchment paper is very reusable. I reuse mine unless it has had oooey gooey stickiness, or heavy-odored foods like garlic or onions. The silicone mats designed to fit the FD pans are the gold standard though for keeping foods from sticking. They are available through Harvest Right, or I have seen them on "Retired At Forty. Live Life Simple" FD supplies. . . . Hope this is helpful 🙂

Not until I read your question! I just tried it. Ugh! Slimy, turned brown, soggy. I won't use them that way ever. They are much better to eat just the way they come out of the freeze dryer!
