Up next John Oates of rock duo Daryl Hall and John Oates or Hall and Oates tells the story of the feel-good 80s classic You Make My Dreams. the song came as a result of a happy accident… John Oates was jamming with a friend…He was playing the delta blues… His friend was playing western swing and they combined it and he started singing what would become the iconic chorus… later the end result didn't sound anything like the blues or western swing it pretty much sounded like the 80s. Honestly, if someone asked me to define the 80s with one song this one would be a candidate… also they quit making the instrument they recorded the iconic riff with so it took them years to find the exact synth to duplicate the song live when their’s was destroyed … the story is up next.

Hey music junkies Professor of Rock, always here to celebrate the greatest artists and songs of all time. If you can still remember when Saturday Night Live was funny… You’ll dig this channel of musical nostalgia. Make sure to Join our community below by subscribing for our daily content and become a patron to help us curate this great history of the rock era
Ya know. Every now and again, a pop song is released that metaphorically speaking: parts the red sea. It’s a head-turner. like that Meme that has been done a million times where the guy is with a woman and is turning his head and checking out another woman walking by. Except the song he is with is current pop music and the song he’s turning his gaze to is You Make My Dreams by Daryl Hall and John Oates.
This happened in 1981 and it’s happened about a hundred times since with the coming generations who are discovering this timeless pop classic. Whether discovering the song through the Wedding Singer or 500 Days of Summer, the result is the same. Let’s be honest this has happened with quite a few songs from the 80s. There’s just a magic in this music from that golden era that transcends all time and space.
Daryl Hall and John Oates were one of the reasons why the 80s were so incredible/ In my opinion, they are the greatest Duo in the history of the Rock Era. There is no doubt in my mind that You Make My Dreams is pop perfection. No hyperbole, no BS it’s the personification of absolute bliss. It’s true, once you hear “You Make My Dreams” you’ll never be the same- knocked into a state of rapture from Daryl Hall’s vocal hypnotism.
It’s so infectious and joyful that you don’t want to come out of the trance.
The addicting ‘get on your feet’ old-time gospel melody spins you around and around, and the 'feel good' icing on the cake is the incomparable Hall & Oates doo-wop harmonies that sweeten up the song’s happy chorus.
Let’s be clear Few can deliver a vocal with the conviction and power of Daryl Hall. Describing his singing style as ‘blue-eyed soul’ is an insult. Daryl Hall is simply the maestro of converting rock & soul into one magical performance.
What Daryl Hall and John Oates do and have always done with their approach to creating and performing their music is deepen our soul’s craving and appreciation for music.

MTV was so good for the music of the ‘80s! It gave us so much diversity of music, and when a song became a hit on MTV, it was soon played on the radio regularly. MTV sucks now. They should just change their name because they rarely even play music videos anymore! I can’t even remember the last time I watched that channel. They same goes for major radio stations. They just suck. Guns and Roses is now Classic Rock? I don’t think so!

"You Make My Dreams" is one of Hall & Oates best songs. During the first half of the 80's, they were on such a roll. So many terrific songs. 1980-1983 were my high school years and I consider Hall & Oates as one of the definitive artists that represented my music soundtrack of those years. Easily one of my top 5 favorite duos of the rock era.

First time out on my own - trying to make it with crappy jobs....struggling to pay bills and the rent - but plenty of parties ! girlfriends ! and hanging out with all the buds ! All of this early 80's music could be the soundtrack for my very own version of Dazed and Confused or Superbad or Fastimes at Ridgemont High ! It was all wonderful ...... even if I was broke all the time !

Adam, I can see you absolutely appreciate them as much as I do. I was born in 1969 and I remember sitting in the back seat of my parents car in 1976 when I heard Sara Smile on the radio. I will never forget it. I’ve been a lifelong fan since. Daryl’s voice has always had so much joy when he sings, he loves it, and it comes across. John too, he loves the music side, but he’s more mellow. If you look at the songs that John sings lead on they tend to be more on the bluesy side. My first concert was with them in 1984 in Pittsburgh, Pa at the Civic Arena BIG BAM BOOM Tour my Mom drove me from Frederick, Maryland. Over the years I’ve probably seen them 20+ times 😊. As long as they keep singing and sound good I will continue to go. Keep doing what you do PROFESSOR, you are providing a great service to the community and it’s a pleasure watching everything you do.

These guys were great. I appreciate these guys as a fan and as a musician. The bass lines in these songs are unbelievable. One of my favorites is Method of modern love. It would be great if you did a video on it. Thanks for acknowledging the importance of John Oates in this duo. I saw an episode of 60 minutes back in the 80s, and they portrayed Oates a a sideman, and nothing more. It's great to see him get the recognition he deserves.

It snowed hugely in West Texas when Hall & Oates were playing the Odessa Dome so nobody’s parents would let any of us drive the 25 miles to the show. So they’re still on my list. But I made up for it when I won a plane ticket, hotel an tickets to see Madonna with my 2nd favorite band, Level 42! Love Madonna but I was there for Mark King slapping funky bass with the Gould Bros!! Greatest concert ever. Imagine my disappointment when I took my husband to see Madonna about 12 years ago and the show was awful. The 5+ minute version of "Method Of Modern Love" REALLY is pop perfection, followed closely by "Out of Touch" and I am a hair metal/metal guy, so, that says something about the production quality and song writing abilities of Hall and Oates. I think Daryl and Todd Rundgren are doing something together, John is touring Germany later this summer. An old friend asked me to come to germany and catch a couple concerts like we used to when we where younger. Concerts used to be $10-25 dollars and you could get a T-shirt for $5-10 often, now it is easy $100-400 to go to a concert for tickets, parking or uber, hotel, etc. Pat Benatar is doing concerts and the seats we looked at where almost $300 dollars a piece plus everything else to get there. Memories are much more expensive now than they used to be. I hope the gents get together and do another Hall and Oates tour if Todd Rundgren was with it would be worth a couple hundred to see them all. Hope you stay safe and healthy.

Today as I'm writing this comment, is Feb 26th, 2024. And I've been Hooked to Hall and Oates since Nov 6, 2023 when "Maneater" hit the Spotify shuffle and my life turned into something else after that. I'd say "Maneater" still beats "You Make my Dreams (Come True)" as my fsvorite song, but the way I got hooked by them is completely different. "Maneater" felt weird at first and precisely that "weirdness" kept me listening to it until the song finally got me on my knees. "You Make My Dreams" was an instant hook from the very first time. It was so recognizable and fun! That happy beat conquered my ears right at the first chorus. There's 15+ DH +JO songs on my "Repeat" list, and they've been the soundtrack of my life these last couple of months. Originally I'm a metalhead since 14yo but thanks to them the variety of genres I listen to nowadays expanded a lot. Since then, I finally understood what Marty Friedman said when he explained why he left Megadeth in 2000: "The grey colour of Heavy Metal is great but I'm an artist. And as an artist I want to have yellow, blue, green, red and purple".

You Make My Dreams, and Your Kiss (Is On My List) were so happy! I love that they didn’t stick to the “same old” and instead kept growing and going wherever the music took them. I always loved Hall and Oats. Their music was just easy to listen to and easy to sing along with. My favorite of theirs is unquestionably "Maneater". My best friend at the time and I used to sing along at the top of our lungs in her basement. I find it hard to pick the catchiest song for the 80s. I graduated high school in 1983 and went directly to college. I was in class from about 8am until 3, had at least one night class each semester, and worked two part time jobs. For 5 years, I lived in a blur of driving to school, home and work. The radio was always playing, but I think my mind was taken up with assignments, tuition and bills. Now in my late 50s, I find myself drawn to 70s music with a smattering of the 60s, 80s, 90s 2000 up to the present. I have to say the 70s and 80s are my go to music most of the time. Two amazing decades of music.

All the pop hits aside, this band with T bone and DeChant was one of the most brilliant, tightest live bands to ever tour. I've seen them in arenas, outdoor gigs, theaters and their sound was always phenomenal, even when they were just riffing and playing around in parts. So effortless, such mastery, it was like watching NBA players warm up popping the net from everywhere vs many bands live versions representing an average high school team. Just a completely different level of skill and they rarely get recognized for that portion of the equation.
