Band BIO:
The band formed in July 2013. Singer/guitarist Miku Kobato, formerly an employee of a Japanese maid café, envisioned forming a band that juxtaposed the maid image with rock music. Kobato recruited lead guitarist Kanami Tōno after an Internet search. Tōno had performed as a singer-songwriter and suggested her occasional backing drummer Akane Hirose for the new band. Hirose in turn suggested bassist Misa, with whom she had attended music school. On July 24, 2013 they had their first live performance at the PP Audition held at Osaka Deep, as a quartet with Kobato on vocals. The band then decided to recruit an additional lead singer and selected Saiki Atsumi during auditions. Their first performance as a five-piece was at the P Festival at Shibuya-AX on August 22, 2013.
FUN FACTS about band::
- Misa loves to drink. She loves it so much she even carries her own hip flask that she uses to drink during concerts
- Kanami has quite the girl crush on Saiki, even going so far as having her as her screensaver on her phone
- One of Band-Maid's dreams is to have their music used in anime, and if it was to be used in an anime, Miku would want the anime to be Bleach, Kanami wants Tokyo Ghoul and Saiki would want it to be Detective Conan.

Kanami always writes the music and melody first. Miku interprets the music and creates the lyrics to fit her interpretation. (This seems unusual to me). Kanami rarely gives Miku any direction on what to write, but on this song she did. Kanami's theme was that "music is freedom" for this song.

Similar to how Tool write their songs - the guitarist, bassist & drummer come up with the music. once thats done then the vocalist Maynard writes the lyrics and the melody for the vocals. Band-Maid & Tool - my favorite two bands atm!

I think one of the factors that makes BM stand out to me it the role of the bass. When this band started out Miku wasn't much of a guitar player, and MISA ended up filling the other side of the "back and forth" that generally happens between lead and rhythm (I'm not talking about back and forth with melody, I'm talking back and forth as far as "filling in" the guitar sound). In most groups the bass has a different role, being the "backbone," that touchstone that the other pieces hang on to, a vital but not necessarily dominate role. Look at some of the other bands you have covered, like Lovebites and NEMOPHILA. Both have exceptional bassists, but they don't come to the forefront, they aren't spotlighted in the same way that MISA is; but if you were to listen to the songs of those bands without the bass, the songs would sound gutted, without a core or foundation, despite the pyrotechnics of the other pieces (and that's not to say that the bassists for those bands COULDN'T take that front stage role for their bands, they're certainly capable, but the songs and songwriting, the structure of the bands themselves, require a more traditional role of the bass). The songs of BM, out of necessity, had to make the bass take a prominent role; and so almost from the band's inception, BM's structure more closely resembled that of RHCP and the dominate role of the bass in that band as compared to most others. While Miku has gotten much better, and her rhythm guitar has risen to match the musical capabilities of her bandmates, MISA's playing and role hasn't diminished; it's a true 5 piece now, but MORE than a traditional 5 piece as well, with both guitars AND bass all 3 now contributing to the "guitar role."

I'm not a musician but it seems Kanami uses Saiki as a sixth instrument at times. She sings the rythm at times driving the song as much as the rythm section. Every song has a wholeness to it even the solos don't stick out as added on. To a non musician there is just something right about Bandmaid songs.

About the guitar backing up the vocal melody, something I think kanami is amazing at when it comes to writing is making her guitar "sing". In a lot of songs she plays riffs identical to the vocal melody, and even in a lot of solos she carries that melody into them. I think alone is one of my favorite songs where kanamis guitar "talks" the whole way through, if that makes sense

As always Kanami writes the basic music, sending it to Akane and MISA (internet). They create their bass and drum lines, which stay pretty much the same through the process. Kanami works with Miku for the rhythm guitar lines. Miku (and now with Saiki) writes the lyrics after the music is complete. All of this is from a number of interviews by them as a group and individually. It's finished in the studio with Saiki having the "We're Done" call. Question: Have you guys checked out Saki's (Mary's Blood, Nemophila), Miyako's (Lovebites) and Miku's (Band Maid) signature guitar videos? They're awesome for tech nerd's like me, how about you guys?? This is one of your best reactions!

Personally, I think this sounds SOOOO much better without the vocals, no dis to Miku. She has a fine voice, but fusion metal of this ilk must be appreciated for composition and musicianship. Now don't everyone jump down my throat, but Liquid Tension Experiment does this sort of thing so much better. After laying down an awesome track like this, I would be very surprised to hear that Band-maid weren't LTE fans themselves. But having said that, credit where credit is due. The music is so clean with out voice. encontré detalles de los instrumentos que no llegaba a encontrarlos en la canción original, son muy sutiles que no se notan (I don't know how to translate to inglish, sorry, gomennsasai)

I understand you chief no worries. Same actually. The song makes more sense without the vocals. Definitely heard some little details we missed in the initial reaction as well.

@@K.H.D710 I agree. I've listened to other bands who are more technical than band-maid but not at all memorable. It's the catchy vocal melodies that stick in your mind and trigger the rest of the instrumental parts that complement the band-maid sound.
