Over the past few reactions to Band Maid songs I have truly began to appreciate what great musicians they are. For this video I wanted to concentrate solely on the music so I chose their instrumental "Onset".

Akane (a-kah-nee, not a-kay-nee) is probably my favorite as well. It's hard to favor one over the other. They're all so good at what they do. Miku has been learning to play on the job from Kanami for 8 years. She had never even held a guitar before she formed Band-Maid. Real Existence live is a great, rocking song to react to next.

Until you get a chance to watch a complete concert, Miku's contribution may be less apparent. Eventually you realise that she is part of _two_ awesome partnerships, one with Kanami giving her the freedom to play lead guitar, and the other with Saiki whether it be harmonies, vocal effects, or second vocal lines. Also Miku does sing lead on a few songs, and does lead a crowd interaction section in each concert. Putting all that together with her lyrics for most songs, means she is kept very busy - heart of the band.

Knowing that Kanami is proficient on keyboard, her tapping the guitar in this song sounds exactly like a harpsichord. Sounds great. Three good choices from their third album Brand New Maid (2016) are "The Non-Fiction Days", "Before Yesterday" and "Alone".

Alone gets less attention than it deserves: not only is it important as marking the real beginning of the band as a self-actualising creative unit, it's also beautifully performed and features one of Kanami's best solos. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l952aJmamdnUmaM.html

Kaname comes up with the musical ideas and the rest of them work out their parts based on those. Saiki is the arbiter of taste and has final say about when they've done enough with a piece. At least that's my understanding. They are truly a group with a collective mind. The really nice part is that they're friends too.

This song is put in to give Saiki a break and relief for her voice. "Play" originally started as a instrumental, but Saiki loved the song so much, she asked Miku to add lyrics so she could participate in the fun, so wa-la, The Small Pigeon added lyrics! "Without Holding Back" is another epic instrumental song from these amazing ladies! The P in D photo collage of "Shake That", "Yolo", "Alone", "Real Existence", "Take Me Higher", and "Turn Me On" are excellent examples of early Band Maid musical magic! Enjoy!

You looking for a starting point for some of their older works? Hands down, it's gonna be Thrill. That will give you a good idea with how their current songs, which they write and compose themselves, compare to their first popular single, which was not exactly written by them (though they had plenty of input from what I hear). Thrill will give you a base line to compare against their later songs.

I find it difficult to have a favorite with this band. Kanami, Akane, and MISA are so skilled with their instruments, Saiki is consistently great with her powerful vocals, and Miku has worked so hard to become the solid rhythm guitarist she is while contributing some important vocals. Plus, from what I've seen in their interviews and on social media, they're all endearing in their own way. They're all my favorite. This was recorded on April 13, 2018 at Zepp Tokyo, not to be confused with Zepp DiverCity Tokyo. Zepp is a series of venues throughout Japan; some have closed, some are still open, and some are still in the planning stages. Also, Zepp's parent company is Sony. It took me a while to pick out the backing track in this song, but I eventually realized right before the bass solo that Kanami was tapping, Miku is strumming chords, yet there's a another guitar part in there that sounds like Kanami recorded herself playing a simple lead that rides the same melody as her tapping. It picks up again toward the end of the song, too. I don't have a problem with it, but it's interesting how seamlessly it blends in.

Thanks for this great Band-Maid reaction. I usually show people this first and then Domination, which usually does the trick. I agree about MISA and Akane (pronounced AH-KAR-NAY) being one of the very best rhythym sections ever - I put them up there with John Bonham and John Paul Jones or Keith Moon and John Entwistle. I'm sure we all check out your other reactions too but Band-Maid, Babymetal, Lovebites will always get more views and comments than many other bands. Recommendations for more Band-Maid would be either Thrill, as it is the oldest MV on their YT page at 6 years ago ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i8qjaspkspOYnIU.html ) or the MV of Rinne from 2 years ago, as it's one of their heaviest songs ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ebdpl8V2u82-k3U.html ). Get to them when you can as we know you already have a long list of other bands to get through as well.

Recommendations for early stuff: Thrill - First music video and hit Freedom (live) - The live performance on their channel is recent, but it is one of their older songs. Also, the live video is one of my favorite BAND-MAID performances and features an extended drum solo. Alone - The first song composed exclusively by BAND-MAID. For their first albums, they had external songwriters. Puzzle - Extremely well-written song. There is also an acoustic live version that is worth checking out. Moratorium - Another all-around great song.

I really like Band-Maid, but I'm actually not as fond of the vocals as I am of the instrumentals. I've gone to quite a bit of trouble trying to collect as much as I can of their instrumental stuff, and that is mostly what I listen. But when I want to step things up a notch, I switch from Band-Maid to Asterism; an instrumental metal trio that blows everything else out of the water. Kanami is great, but Haruka is mindblowing.
