Miku (backing vocals & RB) found Kanami (lead guitar) Kanami called Akane (drums), Akane called MISA (bass), and they all found Saiki (lead singer) through their management company.

These girls formed organically, first with the rhythm guitarist meeting the lead guitarist, who worked with this drummer, who went to school with a bassist. Their first producer killed their first album, insisting they not write or contribute at all. It flopped and the record company was about to drop their contract when this song, one they worked with the writers on, was added as the B side to a poppier single. They used their MV budget on the B side and it blew up internationally to the point they thought something was wrong with KZfaq.

This is their very first Music Video from years ago. You should see their new stuff, especially the Official LIVEs. You'll have some catching up to do. They have well over 100 songs, mostly Hits! They are not a label made vehicle, like BabyMetal was for SuMetal. They formed organically. Backing Vocalist & Rhythm Guitarist, Miku Kobato, worked in a Maid Cafe. She had the idea to for a Hard Rock band so heavy it would contrast with the "Maid Look". She contacted Kanami Tono through her Guitar Videos online. Kanami had worked previously with Drummer, Akane Hirose who had gone to the Tokyo School of Music with Bassist, MISA. Miku's vocals where not quite up to the Hard Rock sound she had envisioned. However, she had always imagined BAND-MAID would have dual vocalists. They recruited Lead Vocalist, Saiki Atsumi, who worked with the same agency, by telling her it would be a Hard Rock band that dressed in "cute clothes" without mentioning that it would be French maid uniforms. Miku then dropped back to a supporting vocal role and had Kanami teach her how to play guitar. But it almost wasn't to be. Had this video not gone viral they label would have dropped them. After that they might have disbanded. MISA had been considering leaving, not being a fan of the Maid outfits. She has since adopted the All Black "Maid Assassin" Look, and the rest is history!. 'Domination' LIVE is a good place to start.

Sadly the Rickenbacker was just a prop in this MV as Miku could not play guitar, fortunately under the tutelage of Kanami (lead), Miku has become an excellent Rhythm guitarist. Once Miku actually started playing, Kanami (lead) was not a fan of the Rick's tone and initially lent Miku one of her Addictone's. Then Kanami got an invite to tour the Zemaitis factory and took Miku along where she fell in love with their guitars, Kanami approved and Miku has been a Zemaitis Player and ambassador ever since and even has had a signature model made 'Flappy Pigeon'. Miku's crunchy rhythm sound is as iconic as everyone else's in Band Maid.

Welcome aboard, Walter. You are embarking on (along with many others - over 176 million YT views plus over 40 million reactor plays!) an awesome, progressive, hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid: BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Prog, Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Jazz, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Joy of Playing, Consistency (125 songs), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destined for mega-stardom. Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off-the-rails spectacular! Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 70 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i8qjaspkspOYnIU.html Their songs from albums Unleash, Unseen World, Conqueror, World Domination, Just Bring It, Brand New Maid, and New Beginning drive even more - Warning, No God, Different, Black Hole, Rinne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Don’t You Tell Me, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on. But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, About Us, Memorable, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, At The Drop Of A Hat, Mirage and Smile... or more punky like After Life, Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like Manners and The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or a bit jazzy like Wonderland… or progressive like No God, Giovanni, and Black Hole… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series… or instrumentals like From Now On, Don’t Be Long, Onset, Without Holding Back and Going Nuts… or their many acoustic versions like Catharsis and Sayonakidori... and last but not least, their Anime hits like Sense, Glory and Unleash (from their own Anime MV (series?)): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bbJykqiBuJqceHk.html) And many songs are represented with 50 well produced music videos. kzfaq.info Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE audience & online OKYU-JI concerts:  ONLINE OKYU-JI (Feb. 11, 2021) “No God” kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pKeUitF6t9CrkZ8.html  Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA (February 14, 2020) “Domination” kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h8iphKZ705zWiZs.html  ZEPP 2018 “Real Existence” kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y9eBoa56sbiZpWQ.html  Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 and other full concerts are on bandmaidprime.tokyo, bili, and official Band-Maid’s DVD/BD/CD.  “P and D²” 30+ Photo Collage videos at www.youtube.com/@PinD2/videos And some of the better quality fan videos are excellent. Here’s two of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at an intimate venue:  Shot by Pat McKee from their 2023 US tour concert in Detroit: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/es2oiJB-u9DYkWQ.html  See the Maids 2023 Rockville Festival’s short-set perfection performance: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rNCKnrGW1K3RmJc.html If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, CD, DVD/BD & Merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid. For fun, check out an awesome, little known "Mega Band-Maid Mix" by DJ Ray of some of their earlier stuff: facebook.com/djrayboston/videos/1004709499579009 Band-Maid Members: Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. At 29 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away her sometimes perceived, coldish persona. Saiki’s powerhouse performances, charisma, and voice focus the experience that’s driven her to the top echelon of hard rock frontwomen... or frontmen! Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 31 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kuruppo! No, no, no… KURUPPO!! Kanami Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 31 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more! Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 32 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party! MISA (Me-Sa) "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass, 30 years old. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note... uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA! Maidiacs (Maid-e-acts) - Band-Maid’s crazed yet supportive, knowledgeable and loyal Super Fans. [BAND-MAID NEWS]  BAND-MAID PRIME - Special Video Distribution Website. Along with nearly 50 great play-through’s by each member, concerts and skits, Band-Maid management / label(s) have included the Acoustic Christmas 2021, ZEPP 2018 and Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 concerts! Fans can now see more than 50 great live performances with awesome audio, etc. like Fate, I Can't Live Without You and the great MISA / Kanami exchange in Don't You Tell Me. As for influences, Kanami (lead) loves Santana (and plays PRS mainly b/c) but you can hear alot of EVH, Satriani and Vai in her work. MISA has sighted Smashing Pumpkins, but you can see in some older videos Police and The Who picks on her bass. Akane got into drumming after hearing /seeing Nao of Maximum The Hormone.

“Drummer’s my favorite” lol check out Freedom live for a nice drum solo. Thrill was my first introduction a few years ago, mainly the bass solo. Seen them twice in concert, Houston and NYC. They are the real thing. Best live. The suggestions are valid, Domination, Onset, Freedom. So many to choose from. The group is a delight and influenced many old timers like me to dust off the old guitar and start strumming.

Tough to say what the "best" live video is, there are SOOOO many that are fantastic. Most people go for the "Domination Live" video as a nice way to start, but it really just keeps getting better and better (with each song you hear). They are fantastically good live! In order of joining the band they are: Miku Kobato (rhythm guitar, vocals, main lyricist, band founder) aka 'Kobato', 'Koba' and occasionally Kuruppo or Cluppo, just to confuse you even more. She uses a stage name and her real name is almost certainly Mika Noguchi. 'Kobato' translates as 'small pigeon', which should help to explain all the references to pigeons and pigeon-holes. Kanami Tōno (lead guitar, main composer, background keyboards) aka 'Kanamincho', 'Mincho', 'The Princess'. Akane Hirose (drums, percussion, sequencing) aka 'Ah-chan', 'Achi' - likes bananas and claims to be a gorilla. MISA (bass guitar) aka 'MISA MISA MISA', 'The Barefoot Assassin' - she doesn't wear shoes on stage hence the nick. Has been known to smile from time to time. Saiki Atsumi (lead vocals, occasional lyrics) aka 'Saichan', 'The Ice Queen ' (but she's a lot less icy these days). Miku worked in a maid cafe to support herself while she was trying to launch a career as a pop idol, whence came the concept of the band. She got the backing of her management company for a band that wore cute clothes and played cool, somewhat aggressive, music. She found lead guitarist Kanami on KZfaq, Kanami invited drummer Akane (with whom she'd played on her own compositions as a solo singer/songwiter ) to join and Akane invited her BFF (and fellow Tokyo School of Music student) MISA to come on board with her bass. Miku eventually concluded that her voice wasn`t powerful enough to front a hard rock outfit so she replaced herself with Saiki and hit up Kanami for guitar lessons.

Band-Maid is best heard live. Domination (official live video) is a great example of what this band can do live or if you want to see more of Akane (the drummer) than Freedom (official live video) is a good one. This is the best rock band out there today. They are top tier (Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Rush) level musicianship and songwriting skills. They are coming back to the US in August for their 10th anniversary tour.

As you saw, Band-Maid are nothing alike except for having Japanese female singers and got being awesome. (Band-Maid are good friends with the Kami Band.) Band-Maid has tons of live videos. You’ll get a lot of recommendations for the live Domination so might as well go with that. The most recent ones are No God and Puzzle, which are great as well.

Once upon a time, a little pigeon named Miku (gt/vo/pigtails) who worked in a maid café had a dream of starting a rock band that combined hard music with the maid image. Seeing herself as the vocalist, the little pigeon set out to find musicians who were willing to help her make this dream come true. First she found Kanami (gt/songwriter) through videos here on YT and similar Japanese portal, she in turn knew drummer Akane (Ah-ka-ney), who knew bassist MISA from her time in music school. Our little pigeon, however, realized that her voice was not entirely suitable for this kind of music, whereupon she became aware of Saiki (Sai-key) through her agency. She was told, however, that Saiki would never agree to join the band if she knew about the maid costumes, so they kept the whole thing from her and just talked about cute dresses. It was only after she agreed, one day into the rehearsal before their first performance, that she found out about the maid costumes. Too late to back out. With the new lead singer on board, this left our little pigeon with no real role other than backup singer in the band, she also had no knowledge of playing an instrument until that point. But persistent as she is, she asked Kanami to be her teacher if she wanted to learn how to play guitar. Of course, she said 'yes' and the great story of 5 maids who set out to achieve world domination with their music could begin... :) Welcome on board of this journey and greetings from the German Maidiacs division! 🙋🏻‍♂🤘🏻 _____________________ 「 _"Our rock never dies ever. I, personally, think, people who are saying "if you like Babymetal, you´d like Band-Maid, too" should be banned from the internet 😉 Of course you can like both of them, many do (not me), but they´re really not anything alike. Band-Maid´s one of the best hard rock bands around, but also one of the best live bands. Try the official lives for "Domination", "Real existence" or the recent "Puzzle".

I agree. It's "if you like this Japanese band, you'll like that one too." I can appreciate the talent involved in Babymetal, but they're so overproduced that they barely sound human to me. Most of what I listen to is J-Rock/J-Metal, but there are plenty of them that I don't care for... basically any of them that overuse harsh vocals are not for me.

@@mightydegu I listened to Saiseiga for the first time today and really liked their music, including a vocalist with a clear, powerful voice--until she started growling, using what you called "harsh vocals." I realize it's kind of expected for heavy metal music, but that's a shame because it seems so unnecessary to me. I feel the same about Nemophila. As you said, as long as they don't overuse them, they might be okay.

Okay, names, pronunciation, nicknames, and roles, in order that they joined the band. Miku Kobato - mee-koo - Kuruppo, the Little Pigeon, the Little Engine Who Will - band founder, backing (and occasionally lead) vocals, rhythm guitar, principal lyricist, tireless Spokespigeon and PR machine. Wielder of weapons grade cuteness. So determined to see her band succeed that she fired herself as lead singer (she decided her voice wasn't strong enough for hard rock), then went looking for a replacement. Learned to play guitar after the band was formed. Kanami Tono - kah-nah-mee - Kanamincho or just Mincho - lead guitar, keyboards, principal composer and arranger. On stage, she's a savant mad riffer with a room temperature IQ and a huge crush on Saiki. In reality, she's a genius, and not just musically- she has a degree in economics with honors from Tokyo University. Akane Hirose - ah-kah-neh - A-chan, the Gorilla - drums, sequencing, snacks, the leader the band doesn't have. What you see is what you get- a cheerful jock with a huge appetite who burns off the calories murdering her drums. Frequently snacks between songs. MISA - mee-sah - the Barefoot Assassin, MISA MISA MISA! - bass, booze, occasional wet work. Usually stone faced. Barely acknowledges the audience's existence. Always has a beer or a bottle of Jim Beam on her Orange amp. Originally, these were ways of coping with stage fright. These days, that's just how the assassin rolls. Saiki Atsumi - sah-ee-kee (but Psyche is close enough) - the Ice Queen, Sensei, Sai-chan - lead vocals, some lyrics, the "We're done" girl. Fashionista and train nerd. In total command on stage; hides behind Miku off stage (she's actually kind of shy).

A great first reaction. I think that you are going to go head long into this band easily. After a few more songs you will discover the individual genius of each member of the band. Unlike Baby Metal who were formed by an agency, don't play instruments and were told the sing metal music and wear maid style costumes. Band-Maid were formed by Miku (Singer and Rhythm Guitar- red rose) who had previous as an Idol Jpop singer. She was working in a Maid Cafe in 2013 when she decided that she wanted to form a band to play hard rock but keeping the maid costumes as a contrast (The Gap). She found the guitarist- Kanami on youtube, who had previously used Akane- Drums, who knew Misa-Bass from music school. Saiki- Lead vocals, was part of the same agency as Miku had been, and who wanted to add a contrast to the vocals. The fans (Madiacs) are loyal and loving and always show the members of the band the greatest respect. Their live shows are amazing, as are the Official Live Videos.

Live? you have got to see and here Manners/Blackhole Official Live Video a Twofer that I think really show a bit of their range of Styles. It hard for any one of us Fans to pick a Favorite because this Band truly plays what they want, when they want. Now that the record company has given them creative control. Seeing this band live in August and then I can die happy knowing I will have seen the best, at their best. you are right best seen live.

Domination LIVE is going to show you the true spirit of Band-Maid. Not even close to their best studio song IMHO, but as far as their official videos go, it's one of the few that has proper crowd mixing (or a crowd FTM as some of the live videos are from their online-only show, meaning no crowds). The live setting completely transforms the song and you'll quickly realize why it has been a staple of their live shows since its release. Best band this century. Live suggestions from their channel: Domination, Play, Freedom, Real Existence, Onset are all perfect crowd mixing (trust me, it makes a difference).

The best live performances in my opinion is 'Manners/Black Hole' Two live songs from the same stream. Unfortunately no audience, because it was recorded during the height of covid restrictions. So the Maids did a live stream for their fans. Both songs show their skills & versatility. But you said you loved the drummer. So 'Freedom' live is for you. Akane does a brilliant extended drum solo that you will love. As we all do.

Sugoi! I'm a little late to the party, but I must say that as a veteran concert-goer of every musical genre (mostly rock) for over 50 years, BAND-MAID is one of the best LIVE bands I've ever seen (last October & just a month ago). Interestingly, despite the language barrier, they are the most audience interactive group I've ever encountered. In addition to the mastery of their instruments and great vocals, this band is FUN. Do not miss them LIVE. Arigatou! 🤘 #SurrenderLove #LetsDance

Best rock band on the planet. This is ten years ago, they've grown exponentially and are so much better now. Try the MV of dice and the watch DOMINATION live. Generally live they're better than the MVs. Watch any Band Maid song, they're all good. Miku, the rhythm guitar player contacted Kanami, lead guitar. Kanami contact Akane who plays the drums. Akane contacted Misa the bass player. Saiki, the lead singer was brought in because Miku felt her voice wasn't strong enough and she wanted someone who fit the music she envisioned more. They're organically formed. Kanami writes most of the musical ideas (she's a genius) and the rest of the group work out their parts using her idea as a framework. Miku, vocals and rhythm guitar, writes most of the lyrics. They didn't get to do their own music originally but they eventually took over creative control and have switched companies and managers and now run their own direction. Miku is the actual face and voice of Band Maid still but what's so great about the group nobody is an egomaniac and they are all friends. They work together to make the music as good as possible. Miku is The Pigeon (you'll understand later), Akane is The Gorilla, Kanami is The genius, Misa is The Barefoot Assassin and Saiki is The Queen. Keep going down the pigeon hole and you won't be dissappointed. There are a number of videos on KZfaq about the histories of the various members and how just coincidence seemed to align the stars to make the group come to reality. They've been together ten years now and still have all kinds of fun on stage. They're more like a family than a rock group.

Welcome to the Maidiacs!! Strap in tight cuz you're in for a wild ride that has been known to improve lives in a profound way!😁 I think you should start off with Domination, which is probably their most legendary performance. Freedom is also great and you'll get to see your favorite , Akane, the drummer, absolutely GO OFF in an EPIC drum solo. Then round it off with either Puzzle and/or No God, 2 more recent performances which will give you a great vision of how they've grown. Thanks! 🤘🤩🤘

It's a sad indictment of the music industry in the west that many seem to find it surprising that a group of women could get together and form a band themselves, choose an image, without having to be 'casted' by record company executives. While most bands in Japan are still male, there is an absolutely ton of female bands, and they got together in the same way that the male bands did. The whole 'casting' thing is really around idol groups, not bands.

Miku is fronting in this video nut no longer. She has her own signature model guitar by Zemantic. She learned to play guitar and worked so hard her hands ached. She learned while showing up on stage clueless and worded so hard to being able to keep up with the other Maids. While she sings harmony. Singing the words she wrote. Run and tell that!

@@ronniebrucehalford8396 don't you love it when youtube delete lengthy answers? anyway, the short version of what I wrote earlier : check the timestamp and you'll know that I wrote my comment before the clip was made public. I still stand by my point : he praises the fact that they are not just fronting a band and the quality of the lyrics. Miku wasn't playing. She was wearing an oversized guitar-shaped necklace. She is now a respectable rhythm guitar player, but back then she *WAS* fronting. And the (most) lyrics were written by Miku (and later Saiki), and the music (mostly) by Kanami on subsequent albums ... but they didn't write Thrill. To get back to the Beatles comparison : this is a fun, nice song, but it's no "Blackbird".
