BAND-MAID, a Japanese hard rock maid band will release their 4th album "Unseen World" on January 2021. It consists of two themes; Genten Kaiki (Back to roots) and Genten Shinka (Progress from present). Under this chaotic situation caused by COVID-19, they wrote various types of songs from the ones which remind you of their early days to the songs with experimental elements, which would be the result of their recent songwriting approaches.
In the cover story of YOUNG GUITAR 2021 Feb. issue, all the members appear and talk about the making of this album. The long interviews (altogether and individuals) include many interesting stories which would satisfy masters and princesses.
In addition to that, here is the video of five of them altogether, looking back the writing process, picking up their favorites songs, etc. You will see how they are confident with the materials. This video could be the key to enjoy their new album.

So... they want to get better. Good lord. They already make everyone else look bad. They talk about their care for fans old and new in their planning and composing. This is just another example why this band matters. They are so very different from most we have seen for years. From talent to character to work ethic to retaining individuality. It really is a dream team and again, I cant say it enough, they are doing it the old way. Their first gig had like 10 ppl and now they are playing the Budokan., Truly inspiring.

The bar for great musicianship in Japan is just that high. From the little I’ve explored into drummers, there are kids as young as 10 who are already listed among the top 500 drummers in the world by Drummerworld. Her name is Yoyoka, 11 now if I’m not wrong. Senri Kawaguchi, currently the most distinguished female drummer of Japan was similarly listed at 13 and by 20 has gotten good enough to share stages with the likes of Dave Weckl, Steve Gadd and Akira Jimbo, some of the greatest drummers in music history. Here’s a link to a drum solo by her kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jJuJd9t12t-vdH0.html And here’s a live of her song “Adventure” kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q9igptJe3J6bpKc.html So from their perspective, it does make sense why they’re so eager to up their game. Especially with how serious they take their music, pretty sure they won’t be satisfied with just being great or superficial popularity. Kanami, Akane and Misa are moreso, as they have all spoken about reaching a position where they will be recognised and known among the best musicians worldwide. Kanami even hopes to eventually be able to write songs that can stand the test of time and become classics. When you take those goals into account, as biased as I might want to be as a fan, I can’t convince myself to honestly admit they are anywhere near that level yet.

Senri Kawaguchi is a terrific drummer, one of the best for sure. But there are also so many really young guitar players in Japan. I guess they are just more focused and determined in Japan, they love what they do, and they work harder than anyone else.

@@panorama4526 True. I’ll probably start digging into guitarists in a few days once I’m done going through the drummers. Pretty sure there are amazing ones there too. Among the bands, Syu (Galneryus), Saki (Nemophila/Mary’s blood) and Kanami are my current favs. I’m into instrumentals and prefer ones like Senri who have their own instrumental albums. So please suggest me guitarist or bassist like her if you know some.

I said the same thing when Genesis and Peter Gabriel went different ways back in the day. The world didn‘t stop because it‘s only music. And music is the important thing, not necessarily the people playing. Do you really want to see middle aged ladies in maid costumes on stage 20 years from now? I know I don‘t... This would be even worse than seeing the Stones in a live concert today. Their time is over, but there are so many new and creative bands. Music is more important than musicians...
@VladimirChupin
@VladimirChupin 3 жыл бұрын
@@panorama4526 I hope BAND-MAID will not be like Rolling Stones, of course 😂 Although I'm 100% sure their costumes in 50 years will be nothing like the current ones. I do understand that music is a very variegated phenomenon, and different people consider different bands and styles to be important. But the bands which I personally consider important for the music, have never ceased to operate. Their later contributions, of course, were not as revolutionary as at the initial stages, but still quite significant. I was never into Genesis and Peter Gabriel, to be honest. In my mind, they are too quirky. In all honesty, the only band which will probably remain in the history of prog music as an important phenomenon, is King Crimson. Others will be awarded a passing notice. OK, an honorary mention of Pink Floyd 😁 And that's given the fact that King Crimson is actually not my favourite band-Van der Graaf Generator is. But if you would ask me to give an objective judgement, I would have to admit that VDGG did not have such a great influence on music. Pink Floyd actually did, you could hear MISA's experiments during the last ONLINE OKYU-JI, that's definitely a thing from Ummagumma. The fact that half a century later a girl at the other side of the world is reproducing those sounds, is a proof that early Pink Floyd has laid an important stone into the edifice of modern music. As far as King Crimson is concerned, they have had, in my estimation, three important incarnations, which must be considered as the huge milestones in the modern musical landscape. - End of 1960s-early 1970s, with the first albums like In the Court of the Crimson King, In the Wake of Poseidon, Lizard, Lark's Tongues In Aspic, etc.; - Early 1980s, with Crimson Beat, Three of a Perfect Pair, and Discipline; - End of 1990s-early 2000s, with THRAK, The ConstruKction Of Light, etc. Each of these periods was unique in terms of music King Crimson was creating. A lot of side projects was created, which proliferated KC influence far and wide in the various genres. In fact, other bands, like Yes and Van der Graaf Generator, may in some sense be considered like satellites to KC. Members were moving between the bands, doing collabs, spin-offs, etc. It was one huge boiling pot of creativity. BAND-MAID is different, of course. They are a powerhouse in itself, they are not collaborating with others. King Crimson was "a school of thought," so to say, a university for many like-minded musicians. BAND-MAID is a tight formation, self-sufficient, a boiling pot of creativity all in itself. But I personally feel that they are no less important for the modern music... Sorry for the long post, I'm thinking about these things for a long time already, just never had a chance to write them down 🙄

Saiki is actually the one, most protective of Kanami. If you look into their in-depth interviews and other small clips from social media, there are a lot of instances where she acts like the always worried elder sister who is constantly checking if everything is fine with her sibling. 😅 It’s honestly very heartwarming and unique considering Kanami is the older one and Japanese usually place a huge emphasis on seniority in age. Saiki is also the one who always brings up how much work Kanami is doing behind the scenes as the songwriter and arranger.

"youngguitarmagazine" - you guys rock! you managed to have the best Band-Maid interviews, the whole series starting with Miku/Kanami on "Different", the printed articles... THANK YOU for not asking the same old questions everytime (like "what is a maid and what does it do?" all over again). The (printed) interviews with Kanami and Miku asked the right questions too... and this one is great too! The new album is going to be awesome! on the interview itself: after the typical Miku-intro (she is energetic, speaking without thinking too much into it, she just "flows", like always, a pro; like the only one who can laugh and giggle without worrying to come off as "unserious")... the whole band seemed "stiff". And besides some goofy-Kanami-faces they were seriously talking facts, they really tried to come off as pros in the interview... Don't goof around, "we are pros", Akane trying her hardest ... well, all that went through the window as soon as Kanami made that funny voice at 7:03 mark :D After that they all relaxed, were more playful :D I love to see them like that! around the 9:30 mark - Miku is still getting a giggle out of Kanamis motivational speech ^^, like on "Different"-interview. And even Saiki right afterwards looked so much more relaxed (and, damn, is she beautiful...) great interview! :)

I have been listening to this song everyday; it simply makes my day complete, without which something is missing. Live Long and Prosper Goddess Kanami... LIVE FOREVER BAND-MAID!!!

This might just be my fav BM interview, up there with the Mook 2019 one. Props to Youngguitarmagazine. Very well shot, concise and we got to hear everyone’s personal thoughts, including tidbits of everything that led to the upcoming album. Btw Kanami and Akane looking fabulous in their new hairdos. And it was amusing to see Kanami getting embarrassed saying “Thank you” repeatedly. While I’m sure she is already appreciated enough, it was nice of them to publicly acknowledge everything she does bts. The best part of this for me is how they were each given ample time to properly articulate everything they wanted to say. Except Miku, the rest are quite reserved in interviews so this was probably the best way to handle a BM interview, with just the right amount of questioning to lead them to speak in more detail. Pretty sure they had to specifically nudge the sober Misa to speak more than a few words 😅 05:58 That slight pause Saiki did was so elegant and Saikilike. It was also nice of Akane to highlight Miku’s parts and reveal her expectations to give her the slight push to work harder. Little things like this while seemingly insignificant, can go a long way in fostering a great positive vibe in any group. Its crucial for appreciation and mutual respect to be verbalised and sometimes even expressed publicly. Many bands fall apart coz they ignore these little details and overlook early signs of communication gap between members. Afterall its not just a personal relationship but a public one with the fans and media exposure. Misa is picking up songwriting too which would definitely add something new to their catalogue and I’m excited for it. It would also lighten the load off Kanami, allowing her to more things in the future. She did say that she wants to write and play with other artists too once BM stabilises. I’m also curious about the storytelling aspect that Miku seems to have tried out this time. This might possibly give them more complex music videos to work with and it is indeed a good time in their career to make stuff that’ll get people talking from the visuals alone. If they can get just one well crafted MV trending on youtube, I bet it’d be more than enough to expand their fanbase by multiple folds. BM imo already has every element needed for mainstream success today, even as a hard rock band - Unique but tastefully done Maid image. Music that clearly stands, head and shoulders above their peers in the genre. Pretty Ladies with the skills to match, in a male dominated field. High energy, radio friendly songs with an overall sound that hits the sweet spot for both causal pop-punk rock and harder metal fans. I just hope their big break will be sooner than later. On that note, Let’s hope the 3rd season of Log Horizon absolutely kills it in the Anime community and maybe even do something wacky enough to trend on Twitter 🤣

Nice analysis. Thanks. Akane must be really happy now, when they have provided an opening for a major anime title. It bodes well for a major boost in the band's popularity.

@@VladimirChupin Yeah, Akane got one of her dreams fulfilled. And It honestly intrigues me why Band Maid hasn’t blown up in the Anime communities yet. As an Anime fan myself, I’m well aware of the kind of artists and music that gets popular easily. And BM in that regard should’ve long been a staple esp. with their maid image, a subculture popularised mostly by Anime. For whatever reason, they’ve been under the radar for so long despite performing in Anime festivals occasionally. Hopefully Log Horizon will atleast let everyone know they exist. The Anime community is massive now with many big youtubers and celebrities showing support for it. Lisa, a solo artist who has performed many Anime openings recently blew up after doing Demon slayer’s opening. In just around a year, her subscriber count went from around 500k to 1.7M. And the very song from that Anime is also trending in several countries on Spotify. It was no. 2 in the Japan charts with her album on 12th. Band Maid ought to ride a similar wave. I’m a little worried over different’s catchiness though as its more on the chaotic side. Something like Puzzle or Clang would’ve been perfect imo.

@@Dtagcity I have learnt of Maximum the Hormone from Death Note anime... although I did not like them 😂 There are many other examples like this. -Tommy Heavenly6 in Soul Eater; -Angela in Pandora Hearts; -Kalafina in Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magika; although they do have a few other songs which I really love... The same about LiSA. She was shining in Angel Beats!! anime, I love her Girl Dead Monster band! It was my major playlist in 2010-2011. But after this, she did not produce anything comparable. And no, her song in Demon's Slayer is very weak, in my opinion. Nothing like Girl Dead Monster, not even close. Another great artist which I love only in the "anime incarnation," is Aya Hirano as Haruhi Suzumiya, with her ENOZ band. The CD which they have released as part of the anime, is amazing. It's the closest in greatness to BAND-MAID, I would say. I still listen to it pretty often. But again, it was a one-time act, there is nothing comparable from Aya Hirano which I would be able to find. It was always a great disappointment to me that such "virtual bands" were never materializing into something more permanent. Always a one-time project. I was happy beyond description when I have discovered BAND-MAID - and not through any anime, which is a rare exception!

@@VladimirChupin The biggest advantage BM has, is their strong catalogue of 80+ tracks. All they need now is One Big hit, something that goes viral and makes everyone curious who they are. Once they get hooked, majority will be trapped for a long, long time 😅 Esp. since they’re just dropping a new album in top of that catalogue. And we’ll probably get the next album in a year too with how prepared and meticulous Kanami is

I think this group is headed toward greatness. They are very, very good already and they keep improving. There are some people in the music business who need no introduction. You simply hear them play or sing and you know who they are. George Benson, David Sanborn, Robert Plant, Steve Perry, Jimmy Hendrix, Al Green just to mention a few. These five women have this inside them also.

Great interview. Personally I'd love to hear a Misa composed song with some singing from Kanami and Saiki on piano and guitar sounds intriguing. Really looking forward to hearing the bass solo on No God. In fact, can't wait to hear all this album and see them in concert! It is an inspired idea to present the songs in two separate back to roots and evolution groups and to come up with some new language to cover it. If you don't like one section, you know the band has thought long and hard about you. English subs very welcome.
