【Roots music】

I translated roughly. Enjoy. - 1st part, Miku and Saiki are promoting Unseen World. Miku says "yokkatta dasu po." (Should be "yokkatta desu po"). Saiki repeats it to make fun of her. They also say they cancelled the Budokan okyuuji because of Corona, and replacing it with an online okyuuji. Stay safe from Corona. - Interview starts. Introductions. Miku says "okaerinasaimase" which is "welcome back," making host feel weird because he's in his workplace, it's Miku and Saiki who's visiting today. Of course Miku had to explain why she kept saying PO. She's a half human half pigeon, but she realized that only after Band-Maid formed. So host asks Saiki what half is she, and she said she's a kissui (pure, genuine, natural-born) human. She's being very human. Host ask Saiki what her 1st impression of Miku was. She says "yabai no kita" meaning "someone dangerous has appeared." Everyone else in Band-Maid is human. - Host then narrates a short history of Band-Maid from 2013 to now. Then host asks details how Band-Maid formed. Miku was already in her current talent agency from the start, she told the current president she wanted to sing. She liked bands, she liked maids. The president said that's interesting, and gave her the go ahead to form a band of maids. So she found the other members and Band-Maid was formed. Saiki joined around 1 month later, Miku wanted a more rock sounding vocalist. Saiki was in the same talent agency as Miku, but was doing her own thing. Then her manager one day told her, listen to this, what do you think? She was like, it's cool. The manager said, they're currently a 4 player band, if you joined, you'd be the 5th. And that's all the manager told her. On Miku's side, the manager told her they got a girl who was really good at singing. Miku was "let us meet her." But the manager said that Saiki would probably reject if she knew that the band's concept was to wear maid clothes. Miku said "if she refused, that would suck. Then, please help us deceive her." So the manager hid both the maid concept and Miku from Saiki. So Saiki met the other 3 members, but they kept telling her Miku couldn't come today, making Saiki wonder how mysterious the 5th member was. The day before the first live, they had a rehearsal, and that's when Saiki first met Miku. Kobato desu po (Hi, I'm Kobato po). Saiki was "huh?" Confusion. Then Miku told Saiki about the maid uniforms. Before that, they only told Saiki they were making the costumes, and asked her she didn't like frilly things right? Saiki said yes, I won't wear anything frilly. And she got "we can adjust it for you in the future, so it's ok." So she got a sense of discomfort because it felt like things were being kept from her. Then they sprang the maid costumes on her the day before the live. She's omg noooooo, it's frilly.... The costumes at the start were uniform for all of them. Saiki threw the apron saying she's not wearing that. But they already cut off her escape route (forced her to do the 1st live because it was decided already). But Saiki had a lot of fun after that 1st live. But she still hated the frilly stuff. Now, their maid costumes are personalized to each member. Miku is the easiest to understand, black and white, frilly, "The Maid." Saiki now is in all black but glittery. They added the glittery because in dark venues, she was hard to see. Her image is "The Queen." (that's right, she's not a princess, she's a queen). A sadist image maid. Saiki's personality does a 180 degree during a live from normal. Normally, she is pretty icy cool, in a live, she is fire. - They talk about what made them first interested in working in the music industry. Miku used to sing enka (ok it seems that enka is something oldies sing) with her grandmother. When she performed for her family, they were all smiles, and she felt it was nice to make people happy, which she felt could do by singing. For Saiki, she said both Saiki and Miku really loved alcohol. Saiki said it was probably genetic in her case, her mom really loved alcohol. She kept going out with friends for drinks, Saiki was young then and she couldn't be left alone in the house, so her mom brought her to bars with her. She had nothing to do, so they told her to sing karaoke. When she did, people kept praising her. And she got addicted to the feeling of being praised. - They talk about the artists that influenced their music. (I have no idea who any of these artists are, so I'll probably butcher the names) Miku - She liked Shiina Ringo from the start. But she first liked the band sound because of Tokyo Jihen. She thought Tokyo Jihen was cool from their MV. She started watching bands live with her friends after that. She liked bands because while every member had different personalities, they are able to bring different instruments to make a unified piece of music. It's not just the vocalist. The vocalist is singing with the band as part of the music. She thought, PO! Saiki - Amuro Namie she liked from grade school. She first learned dance from this period. Shima Ryouhei and Yurayura Teikoku both she was into in high school. Before this, she was into female artists like Amuro Namie and Koda Kumi. But in high school, she first liked male artists like Shima Ryouhei and Yurayura Teikoku because they were "eroppoi" and "suteki." (erotic and dreamy) - They talk about the artists that became a turning point for them. Miku - Tendo Yoshimi and Joou Bachi (probably means queen bee, but I can't say for sure unless I see the kanji). So Miku started singing enka as a kid. The first song she was able to sing in her life was probably Tendo Yoshimi's. So she first discovered music from Tendo Yoshimi's Chindo Monogatari. Host asks how she was able to express the feelings of the song as a kid. She remembers when she was young, she thought the song was amazing. But of course she did not understand a lot of stuff then. But she got the feeling from watching all the grandmas and teachers, that the song was not a happy song. There was probably something deep about it. So she tried to sing with emotion she didn't really understand. So it was a formative experience for her. As for Joou Bachi, she felt (I dunno if this is a solo artist or a band) they had a striking personality, and was very cool, and it excited her. So when she plays in her okyuuji, she wants to make it feel like what she felt like that time. Like she did not want to lose to Joou Bachi. She wants to work hard to surpass what she felt when she watched Joou Bachi. As for Saiki, it is again Amuro Namie. It was the first time she felt that women are cool. She looked up to and wanted to become like her. There were many first feelings she got from Amuro Namie. She wanted to be an "utahime." (a songstress, diva) - They talk about what Band-Maid song they felt became a turning point for them. For Miku, Thrill. For Saiki, Alone. Thrill, because it showed what direction they wanted their music to go. Before that, they wanted to do cool songs while wearing cute maid outfits (The Gap) but they did not have a clear idea of what a cool song was. They got their songs from different songwriters then, and they tried out this kind of cool song, and that kind of cool song. But when they did Thrill, they all realized "ah, this is the kind of cool song I want to do for Band-Maid." Then after that, the MV for Thrill blew up internationally, and they felt "ah, this is the right direction to go." And they got some confidence from that. And the hard rock sound they have now all started from Thrill. So it was by chance that they arrived at Thrill, and not something they knew they wanted from the start. But they all realized this was the direction they wanted to go. Host ask why did they all unanimously felt this was the one. Miku and Saiki doesn't know. It's just something that surpassed logic, and felt cool to all of them. Thrill wasn't actually the single, it was something that was bundled with the single at the time. But they chose to make the MV for Thrill because they felt this was right. As for Alone, it was a song in the first major debut album. Kanami was submitting songs for approval all this time, but everything kept getting rejected. She did not give up, until Alone was finally the first approved song. It was the first song that was creditted as Band-Maid's, and it felt really good. Since then, they write most of their songs now. Alone was the first step to open that door. It was the first creation, after a long time of hard work, and it felt like their hard work had paid off.

thank you SO much, a rundown like this really helps in an attempt of understanding it yourself if you’re studying japanese. does Sai-chan have some distinctive accent? for example, "yabai no kita" sounds like “yobei” to me. also her “arigatō” tends to sound like “arigatā”, and eliding “fu” into “hu” (which isn’t uncommon) she does a lot. is it just personal diction or regional? she also seemed very much at ease in kyoto dialect in the two maiko songs. do you know whose idea using it was and whether they did those lyrics themselves or needed outside help?

@@guignol9595 Hey. I'm learning as I did this too. I got kissui (pureblooded) and tenki (turning point) here; there are others but these 2 I remember clearly. Anyway, I didn't go over this entire interview again so I heard her say arigato one time. Sounds like "arigatō" to me. This is a really common word, I've heard her say it in concert videos and other interviews. Didn't notice her pronouncing it "arigatā" before either. She does say "yabei no kita." But she's saying her thoughts here, and it's not in the polite/proper/formal form of "yabai no kimashita." And yabai is commonly pronounced "yaba" and "yabei" in casual use. ふ actually sounds more like "hfu." Check out a pronunciation of futari or futatsu by a Japanese person on KZfaq or elsewhere. Not by a non-Japanese, those will always turn out as "fu." The h before the fu is more a breathiness than a hard h sound, but it's there. Japanese people don't expect foreigners to actually pronounce the h sound, but if you're hearing it, it's not wrong or weird. I only recently got into Band-Maid. I've heard the Maiko songs, but I dunno how they wrote the lyrics for them. And I don't know what proper Kyoto dialect sounds like, so dunno if she's singing them with or without an accent. But it's different for songs anyway. As long as it sounds good, it's ok. Of course she seems "at ease," that's because she's singing it confidently. As she should. As any singer should. I mean, she sings a lot of English words in their songs confidently and seems at ease, but there's an accent right? But she's improving quickly. I'm not qualified to say if Saiki has a distinctive accent, but I think she has a distinctive voice. Hope this helps.

I think it was either a fairly recent interview or the live stream I heard her say it before. In the last year it really seems these two really ARE good friends now. I had concerns years ago as there was often some tensions in media appearances and some head butting over some songs are rumored to have been an issue years ago, but these days and since Domination it seems, the bonds between all of them are very strong now for real.

For whatever reason, they’ve never listed Kanami in their song credits individually (not even on wiki) even though Miku has always been mentioned. Maybe Kanami herself has agreed to it but its still great that Saiki always remembers to give full credit to her whenever she can. With how unassuming and awkward Kanami is in interviews, I would’ve never known about it if Saiki didn’t bring it up in most of their interviews. I recall hearing about it first in their “Reality check TV interview” where Saiki clearly states that Kanami writes pretty much all of their music. And I became more aware only when I eventually dug deeper into their more in-depth interviews in music magazines. I personally feel credit should be given where due esp. when its someone like Kanami who often works herself to the bone, even falling sick due to it. It might’ve been part of their contract initially and she just didn’t felt like bringing it up later even after switching their labels or it could simply be her trying to lighten the pressure on herself by keeping as lowkey as possible. Either way, she’s really fortunate to have bandmates like them who constantly look out for her rather then trying to downplay it (which unfortunately happens very often) and acknowledge her efforts in public. Band Maid is fully deserving of Kanami declaring it as her purpose in life and pouring her all into it. She talked about how she stayed solo before coz she felt finding a group with shared interests and understanding would be difficult. Guess she truly found the right one quite early in her career.

They do acknowledge Kanami's contribution in some interviews, and she seems happy being a riff machine. I hope they do a video interview like that one, with a studio tour where they practice and the like.

If you keep looking deeper into it you, you'll find that Kanami "only" writes the first drafts of their songs. After presenting the first draft everyone can chime in with their opinions. Members always write their own solos and everyone can suggest changes that Kanami has an open ear for. If the end product doesn't satisfy the last quality gate name Saiki then the song is dropped. She has the final. That's why the song writing credits state "Band-Maid" and not "Mincho Kanami". It's a group effort with Kanami contributing the most and everyone acknowledges this fact all the time. I'm sure Kanami gets a better cut as well. Kanami used "Blooming" as an example of a song that was put together by different ideas from basically all members who she asked, as a kind of home-work, to write some simple melodies, harmonies or Lyrics. This is the exception but can be seen as an exaggerated version of what their normal songwriting process looks like.

@@m00hk00h You need to take some time out and read through this whole interview including all their individual sections and the songwriting section www.reddit.com/r/BandMaid/comments/cbvlp7/translation_of_interview_for_bandmaids_future I’m not trying to discredit anyone here or making stuff up, just stating what I found in their official interviews. What you said about Saiki is right but that applies to the lyrics as well but Miku is listed. Esp. before conqueror Kanami pretty much did everything including the vocal lines, Akane’s parts, Miku’s (still does to this day) and Misa’s. But Misa and Akane often made their own small adjustments before sending the draft back. So its not wrong to say she did close to 80% of the work. That percentage in any field can be credited as the owner. We’re all aware how different came to be as it was clarified in detail. She pretty much slapped together some parts from her collection and released it with a few adjustments. But it was still listed as Band Maid. This is why I brought it up in my first comment and expressed my speculations regarding Why. Let’s be honest here, Kanami does the majority work. But the reason she is not listed might be one of the ones I mentioned. That’s my whole point. I’m just voicing my concerns and anything beyond that is their territory. If Kanami is fine with it, then its all good.

By riding the KEIHAN EXPRESS Miku came up with "PIGEON": (The pigeon of Keihan express, the symbol of the Keihan Express is the pigeon head mark. The design which has been loved from 1952 is said to be from pigeons at the Ishishimizu-hachimangu temple which is on the lines area. The pigeon which is a agent of god is looking over the safety of the passengers.)

They want world domination and we want to give it to them. And they can sing in whatever language they want and that's fine. But doesn't their P.R. and management realize. Providing English subtitles and captions for things like this. Is extremely beneficial to the group and their over all world success ?

90% of all the interviews I've seen it's Miku and Saiki. Miku perky and Saiki looking like she wants to be somewhere else. For those of us who are western barbarians, would you provide English Subs? Thank You

Saiki has gotten better with interviews the past few years. She seems like an introvert and not comfortable talking about herself or drawing attention to herself. I'm sure Saiki knows how important these interviews are for the band. She does joke and laugh after she warms up. Miku is the perfect promoter. I love listening to both of them talk even though I don't understand a word.
