Just to clarify because the live action doesn't seem to mention it, but the reason you can't simply sail in any direction and enterthe Grand Line is because there are strips of stagnant sea (called the Calm Belt) on either side of the Grand Line, and these seas are full of those giant sea beasts in addition to having no wind or tides to sail on, so it is extremely difficult and dangerous. You would have to row a boat past giant monsters, maybe for days.

just a side note: in the manga/anime, characters who ate devil fruits will always reveal upon contact, battle, conversation...etc... In Eiichiro Oda's One Piece World, expect the unexpected, every human in this world can achieve or attain special abilities or skills through rigorous training, even if a person ate a devil fruit but don't know how to use it properly, or not training enough, then he/she would be useless...there are people who are even stronger than a devil fruit user...

The pirates in was based on real pirates in our own world. There so many layers and the world building is lots in it. I was anime fan before anime became popular I was always been called a dork and stupid for watching a kids show. I used to watch Astroboy, Fists of the North Star, Robotech, Trigun and Ghost In The Shell just to name a few. One Piece will always be my number One I love.

The map shows the way to get into the Grandline. There is a reason why people can't just sail into it. They will reveal that reason in season 2.

Luffy has this singular, super-specific dream-- to find the One Piece... so he plans to: go from point A to B, assemble a crew, get rid of whatever gets in the way, find the thing, and become King of the Pirates. It's simple and complicated at the same time, but it's clear-cut & I really like that \m/ I've never seen One Piece because I thought it just another shounen anime with never-ending arcs (I know, I'm dumb XD), so I was pleasantly surprised to find the main character to be this wholesome, easygoing kid with a remarkably optimistic view of ppl & the world.. watching him made me miss that version of myself- I bet it's also why so many ppl have come to love the story for so long (and why the show's a runaway success). Like, yeah-- I GET IT NOW :p

Here's something for you guys to note from this episode. Shanks swam. Devil Fruit users can't swim. So, what was shown... couldn't be a devil fruit.

I love all the first time one piece viewers thoughts on this show. You can really tell how people build theories.

Episode starts with Buggy joke torturing the survivors of a town he destroyed. Episode ends with Buggy the Plushie blasting off again.

The part of the ocean that has no wind is called the calm belt and both sides of the grand liners surrounded by the calm belt Why no one can just sail into it? They have to use a very specific starting point. The no wind thing and of course, the fact that. Calm belt is full of sea monsters. Even bigger than the one in this episode.

I think theres a difference between a 1 to 1 recreation and a true faithful adaptation that stays with the source material. FMA tried to do a 1 to 1 remake and immediently you notice the huge issue with that.... real life people doing anime things is hella cringe. OPLA does not try to be a 1 to 1 remake, with help from the creator they truly took this story and said "how can we tell this in a totally new medium" and changes have to be made in that situation, like this episode in the anime is completely different, Buggy is far more intimidating and yet he still feels like the same old Buggy, its incredible. They did a really good job adapting One Piece.

IGN is just hating. I've been rewatching the anime and in the 1st episode of the live action alone, they had quite the number of changes. Their take about being too faithful to the source material is just BS.

For the discussion of 'faithful'. I think I heard someone earlier this week talking about faithfulness to the show, and they brought up a pretty important point. The point is that you have to adapt the show in a way that makes sense for **live action**. You can't keep something cartoon-y such as the original Alvida because she's cartoonishly overweight. It would never work out. So they found an actress that was overweight, but not in a super unhealthy way. She looked good, but she is super faithful to the show's portrayal of her. She looks JUST LIKE Alvida, just about 150 pounds lighter. So when they're saying (IGN) that one piece is too faithful, I can see where they are coming from, but you cannot make this show if you're not going to be faithful enough to the show. The guy is a rubberman, it's kind of hard to not be faithful to that source material. Like I see where IGN is coming from, but they just are still in the wrong for their rating. The evidence is the rest of the world putting it top of charts in 84 countries. You just can't justify your rating against those odds. In short, keep faithful, but adapt your source material to the 'live action' context, and you'll have a killer show. They could do it with DBZ, but I doubt they will nail the characters well enough to do it. I'm expecting (and by that, damn near demanding) that Naruto is next.

I dont know if it was mentioned but just in case it wasn't.... The grandline is known as the "Pirates Graveyard" because of how crazy the sea and weather is along with the many sea beasts that occupy it and stronger pirates. Going back to the weather and sea it can be freezing one moment and then the next burning hot. Or a tornado with thunderstorms. Just a bunch of crazy stuff.

Very impressed to see how in depth you guys are reading into the powers. The world you’re entering is unimaginably vast and there will be many strange powers that fall outside of devil fruits, many of which you may not realize are even present until well down the line. Welcome to One Piece!

The grand line cant just be sailed to, because its surrounded by a mysterious section of the sea where there is no wind or sea current. Its also where all of the biggest sea monsters like to hang out. You cant sail there, with no wind, and the sea beasts will get you if you try to paddle your way. Theres only one way to get to the grand line, and the map they are looking for shows them the way.

there are 2 mistakes in the scene with the sea monster: 1) Shanks is much stronger than this monster, and in the situation in the series he would have been defeated with his bare hands. in the anime, he literally stole Luffy right from the monster’s mouth, for which lost his arm. 2) He saved Luffy by swimming in the water, and not from a boat. Guess why) also Luffy, when he went sailing for the first time,before he meets Kobi, killed this snake with 1 rubber pistol. but for obvious reasons this was not shown in the series, there were many questions about the strength of the heroes

Buggy is my favorite character in both the live action and the series

So, a hint into the humans in the one piece world. Their life expectancy is about 140 and all have the potential to become much stronger or faster, so weird things are possible. However, in the east blue (where they currently are) they’re in the most peaceful part of the world, no one has really needed to fight or train since Roger was executed, there’s been a heavy Marine presence so the people are often poor, hard workers who are just trying to be peaceful, not much chance or reason for super humans

To be clear, a good director can get a bad actor and mediocre editors to perform well-all they need is to stitch together the right parts from all the shooting material. A good actor can’t save a show/film from a bad director.

How does an anime channel know so little about one piece. That’s one of THE anime’s of all times

I feel like Vice Admiral Garp assumed it was Shanks that raided the base in the first episode. Also if you watch closely just after the initial attack on Shanks row boat you can see Shanks arm flinging to the side into the ocean so I think your supposed to assume Shanks held out his left arm as a defense flinch like he was just caught off guard and was just trying to get the Lord of the Coast to go after him vs Luffy. At least that's my guess.

The place with no wind or currents is the Calm Belt, there is one running parallel to the Grand Line on each side, which makes it impossible to jump into the middle of the Grand Line. (Or leave)

In the original version of shanks saving luffy, shanks is holding luffy as he treads water, he also swam out to them, so we know at least at that time he hasnt eaten one.

In manga/anime, it is clear that Shanks dont eat devil fruit since he swim to help Luffy, the power he demonstrate against the "Lord of The Coast (local level sea monster)" is a different kind of power in One Piece universe. But the live action purposly make Shanks on a boat when he save Luffy, thus bluring his true ability.

you can't be too faithful but you can't go too off the source material it's such a hard line to not cross but the show itself is great I feel it's a good take from the anime. It's call devil fruit, the god of sea hate the devil fruit user. Make them can't use their power in sea water, even they can't swim in it. Luffy use to be good swimmer but then he lose his ability after eating the fruit. Need a lot amount of sea water to make devil fruit user really weak. And there is another ability than the devil fruit thing's. And shank's not eat it. If you wanna go to green line you need map, even if you have map it's still really dangerous. The sea beast that eat shank's hand nothing compared what they have in green line. That why he say he not coming back

Matt Owens and Steven Maeda, the showrunners, before this released...hoped to get a 7/10, and they would had considered it a Win. Fans gave it 8/10 overall..I hoped IGN to give it 8 as well, because thats a casual media take, but damn...

IGN is too bad for their review and they clearly don't know why One Piece is so good. One Piece manga is not even finish yet and how the writers of live action can support to change anything they want. If they do a lot of change, it will be the problem for the current running manga too. One Piece is know for having a lot of mystery, word play, number play, mysterious silhouette, the references from the real life history and wars, the references from Greek mythology, massive world building, the interesting politics, the detailed character backstories, people dream, friendship and freedom. Some of the important pieces of information from chapter 1 are not even reveal in manga yet. LOL
