We thought Bandai's 1/144-scale Millennium Falcon was a thing of beauty, but we're awestruck by the amount of detail in the new Perfect Grade 1/72 Falcon we finally see in person. We learn a few interesting bits about this snap-fit model kit from its exhibitor Bluefin, and scrutinize the finished model on display at Comic-Con.

I would love to see Bandai making military models again. Parts snapped together without horrendous seam lines, good parts separation, gimmicks, detachable accessories, etc. Imagine a Perfect Grade F-16 made with modern Bandai technologies, I'm literally drooling just to think about it.

Actually, they used Hasegawa and Tamiya models for the most part. Its talked about in some of the old documentaries.

Why are you comparing things from 20 years ago? 20 years ago Sega ruled half the video game industry, it doesn't even have a console now. Because of how much Bandai has grown over the years, their kits have become much higher in quality compared to Tamiya, more robust plastic, more complex joints, both snaps and degrees of freedom. And making a fictional mecha into a working model is a far greater task than any simple vehicle.

I dunno about 20 year old Revell car kits, but some of these 20 year old Revell plane kits are a bit iffy. Though that might be entirely your point. If an old Revell plane is questionable, how bad might an old MG be. Also, I just realized that a 20 year old kit came out of the mid 90s and not the late 80s. Time is unkind.

Nunya Bidness Tamiya does make some damn fine models. Still, I do have to point out that as a result of how long they reuse molds, if they make an error, you will see that error for the next 20 years.

I just built the red 5 xwing kit (even saw the decal sheet on this video) and I admit I'm hooked. If I didn't know that an $800 UCS Falcon was on its way I would be all over this.

I remember all those years ago the effect the Falcon had on me {and all my artwork since } as they escaped and it flew out of Moss Isley that first time, the stormtroopers turning to see it go wow!, the second huge thrill was in TESB as it was leaving the ice base and flies past Luke, I was genuinely thrilled in a way only a few movie scenes have done to me, even in the later films the Falcon is how I gauge how good a SW movie is, I have to sat there were some in TFA that blew me away

I've seen reviews from amateur and professional model builders that Bandai makes the highest quality, most precision molded, perfect-fitting models kits they have built. $400 for 36 runners made with leading, state of the art technology is definitely a reasonable price, especially considering the research, development, tooling and manufacturing costs for such a highly engineered kit. Just sayin'

Esteban Dufanzo yup as someone that's built kotobukiya, volks, and and Bandai kits, Bandai is the Lego of the model making world. They have very few molding defects and unlike Lego their prices are actually really good when it comes to dollar per plastic.

I don't think so, but a scratch build of a space slug would be pretty easy, Mos Eisley wouldn't be too difficult, just requires some careful geometry and weathering. A Death Star docking bay would be pretty tough I think, a lot of precise angles, filets, materials and lighting

This model went together easier than the Fine Molds Falcon. Interestingly, the model scales out perfectly with the original ILM model. However, when put next to the Fine Molds model, they’re different sizes. I really liked the intricate detailing that Bandai did on their Falcon. Much better than Fine Molds.

There's a community of fans working on building a 1:1 Falcon. When it's done it will be open to fans to explore the interior. Several of the interior areas are coming together and design of the structure is in progress. The only frustrating thing is the guy in charge of the cockpit has repeatedly finished the section, decided he wasn't happy with it, then starts over almost completely by scratch. So the project is taking a long time. Search "Full Scale Falcon"

You should use the term "Press Fit" not "snap". Also, Why does their build up have blue engine lights instead of the white? Bandai is very proud of the fact that their design is the ANH and in particular features the WHITE engine lights NOT the blue as seen in ESB.

$400 for a snap fit kit. I haven't built a snap kit in a very long time. I wonder if they're much better than they used to be. Used to make a lot of compromises just to avoid a little plastic weld.

Bandai snap kits are generally top of the line, especially their Star Wars lineup. You could probably build it out of the box with no glue or paint without issue...that being said, you'll still probably want some glue for seams and any potential loose parts.

Also, to add on to the second part of your comment, oh my god old snap fit kits are the absolute worst. I found an old Revell snap fit Blue Angel I built when I was like 8 and all I can think is "How dumb was I to think this kit looked amazing?"

The MF is just made for a giant rebel logo all over it, just sold my version i made for the Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures Game. Just some masking tape and some wash or airbrush or whatever. You can make it clean or just make it rough as if they also just kind of slapped it on. Call it heresy, i just think it looks awesome.

rclru normally I would agree but I think they want to make up for this being essentially a snap tite kit; so they let you weather the Falcon on your own and paint it on your own. A lot of traditional models that run for this price require glue, paint, sanding, etc. Since Bandai does pretty much all that for you I think they want to leave you with an element of actually putting it together because in all honesty this kit doesn't take very long to snap together. A friend got it and put it together in about 2-3 hours because there wasn't any glue required so I think they want to leave an element of actually feeling like you accomplished something.

Its still cheaper than Hasbro's Jabba's sail barge. That's going for about $5000 on amazon last time I checked. On the plus side though you can get a dozen Rose Tico action figures on some sites for valentines day for about $15, so I guess Disney is doing something right..... Sigh.....

Cool kit, but I thought Bandai was not allowed to distributed Star Wars model kits in the U.S.? I thought Revell had the exclusive Star Wars license in the U.S. I remember the owner of my local model shop telling me he couldn't get the Bandai kits anymore because Revell had taken legal action against Bandai.

Wasn't the original made from mostly Tamiya Hasegawa and Revell? I guess 30% he said.. According to Lorne Peterson, (a founding member of ILM). It was mostly "ANzo Annies" and "Thors", no? .. and is this seriously up to $900 USD and over 1k CAD? Can modelers even afford this?
