This video looks at the Employment (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2018/Employment (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2017 which brings big changes from March, 2019 in relation to zero hours contracts, temporary/casual/precarious work and introduces banded hours contracts and serious penalties for employers in respect of "bogus self employment" contracts.

Very interesting and seems like a big step in this era of precarious work. Is this only Ireland? I was wondering if it was influenced by the EU but a quick search is not showing me anything and I am led to believe it is specific to Ireland. Is that so? What is employers' reactions to this? Thank you.

Yes, it is only Ireland, not EU law

I was employed as a security guard back in July and the job advertisement never mentioned anything about the job being zero hours nor was I told during the interview so asfar as I was concerned I was starting a full time job. But over the last 5 weeks they haven`t given me a single hours work...I was not given any information regarding how long the contract was for or what my minimum hours would be......I`m living on my own and I have no food nor the money for bills. I`m in England so I don`t know my rights if I have any at all.

Thanks Terry. I'm in band f but my employer insists they can give me less than 26 hrs per wk. Is that true?

It depends on all the circumstances of your employment, the previous 12 months, whether it was temporary, significant adverse changes to the business etc. Go to a Citizen's Information office or a solicitor for advice. the solicitor will charge a consultation fee, citizens' information is free because it is funded by the taxpayer.
