My dad was going thru chemo and I'd been holding his weak hands almost all day and night. I had gone home to take a shower and told him I would be right back and that he could beat it. That was the last time I saw him. I rushed back to the hospital and this song played while I was driving. It was already an emotional song and I'm a grown man but every time that chorus comes in with Saiki's voice, I break down hard. Miss you Pa!

昨年10月にBAND-MAIDにたどり着いてこの一年、全てのCDとNET動画を見まくりスマホに入れて聞きまくって、次々と紡ぎ出され演奏される曲に外れがないことに驚嘆しつつ、数少ないバラードの中で「Daydreaming」はやはり屈指の名曲だと改めて感じます。 　パワフルでスピーディで過激な演奏に最初は圧倒されますが、その世界にどっぷり漬かって見るとBAND-MAIDの音楽の全てには、j-popというより日本の歌謡曲の伝統とも言うべき哀切なメロディーと歌詞の融合が醸し出すエモーショナルな通底音が流れていると思い始めています。この「Daydreaming」と「puzzle」はそれがストレートに出ているバラードの傑作でしょう。「哀愁のヨーロッパ」のサンタナをリスペクトするKANAMIの作曲とMIKUの痛切な歌詞、そして誤解を恐れずに言えば演歌歌手の情感たっぷりの歌唱法にも通じるSAIKIの官能的な声が作り出す嫋々たる世界。 「Daydreaming」はほぼ全てのライブで激しい演奏の中間に箸休めのようにミドルテンポのバラードとして演奏されていますが、SAIKIのボーカルでいきなり始まるこのMVよりも、長いイントロから入る数々のLIVEヴァージョン、なかでも深い夜霧のような舞台演出から静かに流れるKANAMIのピアノソロのイントロで始まる2018ZEPPTOKYOでのLIVEバージョンの方が哀愁に満ちたこの曲にふさわしいでしょう。 もう一つ、あまり言及されることはないようですが、MIKUが紡ぎ出す哀切な歌詞がメロディーと融合して特別な世界を作り上げていることを忘れることはできません。 感情や思いを直接表現する日本語歌詞部分と心の動きを映像として投影した映画のシーンのような情景を描く部分が交互に繰り返され、曲調にあった世界が出現します。 募っていく恋心をそのまま言葉にする感情の部分 「覚めないで　掠れた声で　今夜だけは　そばにいてよ 消えないで　離れないで　今夜だけは　そばにいてよ それでも加速してく思い　もっと感じたい　」 甘く切ない二人の関係を投影した情景の部分 「月明かりに揺れ動いた　交わる二人の影 不器用に絡み合って　明けない夜を願った」 「吐息を感じる距離が　なんだかとても愛しくて 動き出した二人の影が　明けてく夜に溶けた」 そして、絶妙のタイミングで挿入される英語歌詞が日本語歌詞の世界を補強しています。 でも、この曲の郷愁と憂愁に満ちた世界は「Daydreaming」のタイトルが示すように、現実にあった世界でなく、白日夢、甘い空想の世界かもしれないというMIKUの覚めた批評が根底にあるようにも思われます。 ファンなら知ってるように、BAND-MAIDの曲は全てメロディ先行で歌詞は曲調に合わせた世界をMIKUが感じて考えて調べて、MIKU個人の感情や思いを入れずに小説や絵画のように構成され創作されています。それは短歌のような言葉数に制限のある日本の定型詩のように不自由なスタイルですが、MIKUはその方が作りやすいと言っています。その中で英語歌詞はメロディと歌詞の過不足を調整するように挿入されているのかもしれないという気もします。 切ないほどの強い思いを直接言葉にするのでなく、映画のように感情をビジュアル化して表現するというスタイルは名曲「puzzle」ですでに試みられています。恋の予感を「puzzleピースがはまる音がした」と言い、破局の予感を「崩れてくpuzzle」という視覚的表現で歌っていることには舌を巻きました。 「Daydreaming」の作詞にはSAIKIが加わっているようですが、どの部分がそれなのか、興味津々ですね。多分、ストレートな感情表現の部分だと思いますが、それだけSAIKIにもこの曲への思い入れが強かったと言うことでしょうか。 それにしても「Daydreaming」も「puzzle」も、海外のファンからのおびただしいReaction動画がアップされていて、5人のメンバーの才能が融合する絶妙なアンサンブルで演奏される、これらの曲のエモーショナルでエロティックとさえ言える魅惑的な世界に心がつかまれていることが察しられます。ただ残念なことは、楽曲と演奏の魅力に加えて、海外のファンにも日本語歌詞の素晴らしさをその語感を含めて味わえたならBAND-MAIDの音楽の全体がさらに理解されることだろう、と言う思いが残ることです。（2023.10.4）

音楽が存在している意義を知らしめるような曲ですね 息をするのも苦しい、時間が経過していることも苦しい まぁ～安易な言葉だけれど『せつなさ』爆発度合が押し寄せてくる なぜ、小さな幸せにすら到達できないのか 思えば思うほど、せつなさしか湧いてこない こんなに苦しいなら、あなたなどいなければいいのに 言葉（詩）としてはありきたりだけれど 音楽で表現しきれる力は近年BAND-MAIDが群を抜いていると私は感じる 将来、「伝説の日本の女性ロックバンド」そう言われる価値のある１曲だと感じる

このバンドはホントすごい。メイドコスでイロモノだと思ったら大間違い。 ビジュアル系とか日本のバンドにありがちなメロディ重視で常に全力疾走するような聴いてて疲れるようなメリハリがないバンドでもなく、リズムがしっかりしててリフもカッコよく緩急がある曲展開で素晴らしい。海外での方が人気出るのも分かるわ。。

I always find it interesting how Kanami considers this one of her most difficult compositions. On first listen, it seems simple. But once you start listening to the layers, the complexity is there.
