With this investigation, we can reveal that two of the UN's troop contributing countries - Bangladesh and Sri Lanka - are sending officers on peacekeeping missions who are implicated human rights violations like torture and extrajudicial killings back home. The UN is seemingly turning a blind eye.
For this story we teamed up with Netra News and Süddeutsche Zeitung.
An Investigation by Naomi Conrad, Arafatul Islam & Birgitta Schülke
In cooperation with
Netra News

After all the general people of Bangladesh really would be thankful to UN authority if they finally sanctioned on Bangladesh Military as part of banned on international peacekeeping mission.

Nothing will happen. Nothing will happen. Bangladeshi people loves to take advantage of corruption. Everyone wants warm support from MPs and corrupt officers. Every Bangladeshi people wishes to get support from local gangs, MPs, officers to get monetary and legal advantage. Nothing will change from this corrupt society. All the criticizing commenters here are just those people. If I show them money, they'll do everything for me and forget morality.

I am also a heir of a personel from Bangladesh defence force. My dad used to serve in the Air Force for more then 2 decades also he particapated in peace keeping mission in lead by United Nation during the 'Operation Desert Storm'. During that time, Bangladesh received numerous international honors and recognition as global peacekeepers. My family has a strong legacy in peacekeeping, with my uncle and other relatives also participating in UN missions in Mali and Haiti. But if you talk about the today's situation of Bangladesh armed force, people tags the defence personels as the government's crook. And this situation took a turnover after the mutiny happened back in 2009, when Awami league won the election and handed with power in 2008. High-ranking officials, including the son of the so-called 'Mother of Democracy,' were implicated in a conspiracy to destabilize the defense services. The mutiny resulted in the deaths of 52 top army officers, creating a climate of fear regarding any potential military coup against Prime Minister Hasina's regime. Since then, Hasina has strategically placed her close family members and trusted associates in charge of the military, Air Force, police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and Navy, ensuring their loyalty. From 2008 to 2024, Bangladesh has witnessed numerous incidents of extrajudicial killings, defense corruption, and border killings by the BSF. Despite these issues, no significant actions have been taken by the armed forces. Instead, the government has increased benefits for defense personnel, providing them with government-funded apartments and high wages by missusing public tax to secure millitary's loyalty and protect Hasina's regime. Meanwhile, the majority of the population suffers from high commodity prices, excessive taxation, poverty, and malnutrition. But these government loyalists and their families lead luxurious lives at home and abroad, leaving the people to bear the burden of their debts.

Why don't you talk about NATO forces!!Have they treated the people of Afghanistan, Iraq humanely? The history of European colonial armies is not very good. 1. Afghanistan: - Kunduz Airstrike (2009): A NATO airstrike ordered by a German commander killed around 100 people, including civilians. - Night Raids: Reports of civilian casualties and abuses during night raids conducted by NATO forces. - U.S. Soldiers' Misconduct (2010-2012): Instances of U.S. soldiers' misconduct, including urinating on corpses and posing with dead insurgents. 2. Iraq: - Abu Ghraib Scandal (2003-2004): U.S. soldiers involved in the torture and abuse of Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib prison. - Haditha Massacre (2005): U.S. Marines killed 24 Iraqi civilians in Haditha. 3.Bosnia and Herzegovina: - Srebrenica Massacre (1995): Although NATO was not directly involved in the massacre, failures in protecting civilians under their mandate were criticized. 4. Kosovo: - NATO Bombing Campaign (1999)**: Civilian casualties resulted from NATO airstrikes, including the bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade and a refugee convoy. 5. Libya: - NATO Intervention (2011): Civilian casualties during NATO's bombing campaign aimed at overthrowing Muammar Gaddafi. 6. Other Incidents: - Sexual Misconduct: Cases of sexual abuse and exploitation by NATO personnel in various missions. - Misuse of Force: Incidents where excessive force was used against civilians or detainees.

The people of Bangladesh are living like spiral of silence. Recently Awami League announced and start to establish committee in private University. Pupils are having so much trouble to study there. I periodically saw lots of conflict in my own campus. Though I am studying my own money, the place should be out of politics. But Awami League grabbed every sector and dictates Bangladesh like a dictator.

Let's see what happens if democracy come back in Bangladesh: Democracy came back in 2024 election. People voted bnp for new hope. BNP f**ked us all. No development Then 2029 election came. Everyone voted Jamat. Jamaat f**cked us all. People became upset. Then 2034 came. People voted Jatio Party. They also fu**ed us all. People now hopeless. Then 2039 came. People voted Awami. Again f*cked. 2044 came and country became like Sub-Shaharan Africa. So let one party rule. Let them complete their projects. At least nation will develop.

It's imperative to promote Bangladesh's peacekeepers' success and contributions worldwide, establishing truth and fairness. I think that any attempt to tarnish the glorious history of our peacekeepers through misinformation will not succeed. Why don't you talk about NATO forces!!Have they treated the people of Afghanistan, Iraq humanely? The history of European colonial armies is not very good. 1. **Afghanistan**: - **Kunduz Airstrike (2009)**: A NATO airstrike ordered by a German commander killed around 100 people, including civilians. - **Night Raids**: Reports of civilian casualties and abuses during night raids conducted by NATO forces. - **U.S. Soldiers' Misconduct (2010-2012)**: Instances of U.S. soldiers' misconduct, including urinating on corpses and posing with dead insurgents. 2. **Iraq**: - **Abu Ghraib Scandal (2003-2004)**: U.S. soldiers involved in the torture and abuse of Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib prison. - **Haditha Massacre (2005)**: U.S. Marines killed 24 Iraqi civilians in Haditha. 3. **Bosnia and Herzegovina**: - **Srebrenica Massacre (1995)**: Although NATO was not directly involved in the massacre, failures in protecting civilians under their mandate were criticized. 4. **Kosovo**: - **NATO Bombing Campaign (1999)**: Civilian casualties resulted from NATO airstrikes, including the bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade and a refugee convoy. 5. **Libya**: - **NATO Intervention (2011)**: Civilian casualties during NATO's bombing campaign aimed at overthrowing Muammar Gaddafi. 6. **Other Incidents**: - **Sexual Misconduct**: Cases of sexual abuse and exploitation by NATO personnel in various missions. - **Misuse of Force**: Incidents where excessive force was used against civilians or detainees.

DW's work on this is quite sloppy. Three former RAB officials went on UN peace missions this year, and DW's 'Aynaghor' documentary "proved" that RAB is responsible for extrajudicial killings. Solely based on this connection, it's unfair to label all Bangladeshi peacekeepers as human rights abusers. While the documentary only mention Bangladesh in the title, the only clear case of human rights abuse this documentary could show is from Sri Lanka. But reading the title, no one would get the idea of it. This seems like a provocative documentary with weak evidence linking Bangladesh.

Worked for the UN, my job involved me visiting all of the peacekeeping missions. Individuals like this or suspected to be like this, not just from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka but perhaps half a dozen countries, can be found in across peacekeeping mission. Why did we accept this? Because there was no one else. I do not know a senior diplomat from any country at the UN who was not aware of this situation.

You make the best point for closing the UN altogether. It’s a den of massive exploitation and plundering of the Third World by the Elite corporate interests. Most “conflicts” are nothing more than dressed-up covert coups that plunge the country into chaos, so the corporations can gut and plunder the place of its natural resources. The UN is useless to actual world peace….the UN is actually a threat to humanity at large.
