I am not a huge fan of Shinee but I loved him! I knew Shinee back in 2015 but didn't stan them. I liked them and Jonghyun was my favorite member. When I found out he died, I cried badly. I kept reading good quotes like the ones on here.

Fans knew it in fact he was having professional help, but not even that help him so... yes, he was saying good bye, he wasn't crying for someone to notice his pain because fans already knew that he had depression, he didn't want help, he want to leave this world, to run away from his life and his pain, but it's true that he was ready to go and nobody notice, but it's because his way of "feeling better" was expressing his feelings in his songs so was in someway "normal" to fans to listen deep songs of him but for example "lonely" and "let me out" yes were really strong and there he show signals about what he wanted to do so I think that songs were really worrying but I wasn't fan in that times and I don't blame his fans because in the case that they notice of that at time.. What will they do? They can't tell him that don't do it, he was suffering it would have been so cruel to not letting him and make him still being in this awful life that was killing him from inside... anyone that really loved him will prefer this than making him live sad, depressive... so will be selfish to want him living just for do music like a slave

look, you can't know what goes on when the cameras are off, shinee are some of the closest people he ever had, as brothers, of course they know about his depression, and of course they tried to help him, and I know that this has not confirmed, but we don't need a confirmation, to know that shinee did everthing they could. Instead of posting stuff like this, "Nobody noticed", "Rip", "I miss him" or "I'll be honest I wasn't a fan of shinee but..." don't post stuff like this. You should keep his memories and moments alive, like he will forever be in our hearts as a fantastic singer when he was alive. Appreciate this clip. @ Andie Alison - Good point - it wasn’t his fans’ responsibility - but management and promotions and therapists did play a major part in this - yes, !! I just found these videos later while “researching “ something else . The videos have made me emotional as well . Maybe due to the situation . The group came to Canada in 2016 - but not to my province in Canada - or didn’t get the promotion to know about it .. They came to Toronto - more people who would have appreciated to see them . I called a name brand big record store - they don’t even have their albums I can’t even buy them. To appreciate the music they had .

Thank you so much for your comment! I have my own mental heath struggles and have had a few friends pass the way he did. The most sad but true fact about suicide is that most who do it have their mind made up and would not be able to be talked out of it. Depression is a disease and therefore, sometimes it claims the lives of those who have it. Don't stop trying to do what you can for friends and family who might be depressed as it does help having someone to lean on and talk to. Sometimes those with depression will hide what's going on with them cause they don't wanna burden those they love. I hope everyone takes their mental health seriously and try to stay healthy in general...

It isn't usually planned out long term, and a lot of the times, the survivors do say that the second they knew they were going to die, that it was an instant regret. That doesn't seem to be the case, here, as much as it pains me to say.

That's totally true.. we could miss him in a lot of ways (quitting the group, take a break,...) but the fact that we know that he's never coming back, we will never see him again... that's what is breaking my heart. If he was dead in an accident I will be sad but I am more sad cauz he killed himself. Cauz in an accident we can't do anything for him. But the fact is that if we knew maybe we could have saving him.. maybe he would still be alive ... and I'm crying again T^T

@@akemi3135 I actually think it would have been sadder for him to have lost his life in an accident, because that way he couldn't have done anything about it. His life would've just been taken from him without him or anyone else being able to decide about it, his opportunities just violently ripped out of his grasp. I know it's not a good thing in any way that he has taken his own life but he chose to do so because he couldn't deal with the pain any longer. It was his decision to make not ours. While I am very sad about him not being 'here' anymore I am at the same time very happy to be able to listen to his music in the first place and that he is in a better place right now. It doesn't necessarily have to be a beautiful paradise but just him not having to bear any more pain is enough. And I know that Shawols will always keep him alive through playing and singing his songs and remembering him. While he opened many peoples eyes and saved them, in the end he himself couldn't be saved. But instead of looking back and regretting us not being able to help we should look forward and try to make sure this kind of thing doesn't happen again. Don't remember him because of his death and the way he died but by his beautiful personality and creations in any way, shape or form. And last but not least. If you ever need help please talk to people. Talk about your problems even if they are only small things. I really don't want you or any other person to hurt. Also remember that you are beautiful and kind. I can tell by the fact that you came here and still think about him even after years have passed. Stay happy and safe. And yes this might have turned into a whole ass essay but this needs to be said.

He was so obvious to let you know that he's suffering from depression and anxiety. me too. i’m a fan now, but back in 2017 when he passed, i wasn’t, and yet i was still so heartbroken. i remember waking up to the news and going to school with an empty feeling in my heart. we played a beautiful piece in orchestra and i thought of him the whole time, dedicating it to him in my mind. i’m trying my best to relearn that piece on the piano now. every time i’ve heard it ever since he’s passed, i’ve always thought about him.

I suffered from depression and thought everyday about multiple ways to kill myself because I was tired of fighting everything, because everything in my life supposedly went well but my mental health only went worse. The only reason that kept me alive was the people that I cared about and that cared about me. Instead of dying for someone, I think that what shows the most how much you love them is living for them. My parents were the reason, I lived for them until I found a reason why I should live for myself

SAME!! after hearing the news, me and my sister just sat in silence for 2 hours. The only reason we moved it's because my Dad was like, 'what are you two doing? it's so quiet.' SHINee was my first too, and Jjong is my ultimate bias. I legit used to think: 'I can't wait till he's older; I wonder who he'll get married to. All the beautiful music he'll release. I hope I get to meet him one day etc etc' I've come to terms with it -ish now. I still find it a little hard to listen to their old songs & his music, & I hate that he was in so much pain/self hatred. (;___;)

It didn't go well. When I texted my friend (it was late at night) she said she was going to kill herself and went offline. I tried to reach her but she wouldn't answer anything so I rushed over to her place and I was so, so scared . . . because she is the kind of person that doesn't make jokes about this kind of stuff. My heart dropped when I found her alive

he most certainly did, unfortunately. he had sent his suicide note to a fellow friend a couple days prior. she tried to warn her agency about the suicide note and asked them to keep an eye on him, but it was too late. it’s so heartbreaking. i cant even imagine how much he hurt if he was so set on it for days. weeks.

This question had been on my mind so often. Why didn’t anyone notice? Here in Germany there’s a saying „sometimes you can’t see the forest because of the trees“ - meaning that sometimes things are too obvious to notice. And that kinda helped me trying to understand everything that happened.

I like that saying. I think if the people around him were educated on how serious his condition was, maybe things would've ended differently. I've seen many people comment and say 'Other idols also had depression but they got through it' etc. But people don't realize that you can't compare his situation to someone else's. Most people develop depression for a number of reasons like their environment, job loss etc. In these situations you know what you need to do to feel better. Sometimes you don't even need medication or therapy. Other people might need medication for a short period, until they feel like themselves again. I believe Jonghyun had clinical depression based on the things he said. He said he's always been a 'sad' person since childhood. He had seasonal affective disorder, insomnia and memory loss. All of these things along with how long he's been struggling with depression shows that he was clinically depressed. In this case it doesn't matter how much support or positive thinking you have. The only way to manage your depression is through medication and therapy. He could try and figure out what he needs to do to be happy and successfully do it, but he would never be able to sustain happiness for long periods of time. In his case there were factors that added to his depression but at the root of it was the fact that he had a chemical imbalance. Some people are just born with it. Unfortunately it's completely out of their control. I feel like if the people around him were aware of how serious and dangerous his case was, they probably could've sent him to a specialist for treatment outside of the country. He would've had to be on medication for the rest of his life. I think the doctor who was treating him didn't even know he was dealing with clinical depression which is strange, a doctor should know. Obviously I can't point a finger at the doctor because I wasn't there, but based off the things Jonghyun mentioned, like telling to find out why he's depressed and saying it's a part of his personality makes me think the doctor thought he had mild depression which could be solved by 'fixing' the problem. He wanted to live hence he tried to get help and held on for as long as he did. With clinical depression you can overcome all the obstacles that might be keeping you from happiness but whenever you do what you need to do you're never happy. So if I've done everything else and I'm still not happy, the problem must be, I'm the reason I'm in pain and unhappy. And that's when it starts becoming really dangerous and life threatening. His situation still makes me angry because his case was treatable. Had he gotten the necessary help earlier on, things would be different. But yeah I just hope his passing will create some awareness❤

However when he went to see a doctor the doctor dismissed him and told him it’s all in his head. In Korean society depression is viewed as weak/fake and they think you should just get over it :/
