It's the same here in Fremantle Hospital (Western Australia). First names only are used whether you're a nurse, a patient, a surgeon, a caterer, a porter or whatever. It's a policy that does much to help people relax in what may be a really strange environment to them.

5 years ago I dealt with sepsis because of a decubitus ulcer that got infected. On top of it all I was also going through diabetic ketoacidosis. I’ll never forget the fear everyone had including the ER technician who took my vitals. 3 days in ICU and then 5 days moved to the regular floors. It was an eye opener for me to start taking better care of my type 1 diabetes and my physical disability.

John and Martin's story is exactly the same as mine and my Carer. We are very close, not just because neither of us want to end up being a 'suspicious bad smell' in the neighbourhood. We have no family and no loved ones and no friends. That's what old age does to people on their own.

I've never seen these inhalant painkillers in the US. I wonder why those aren't used here. Is it some issue with the FDA?
@Teresa-L.2024
@Teresa-L.2024 5 ай бұрын
There's a lot that they don't do here in the States. Too many politicians interfering with allowing doctors to use appropriate pain management for patients. The NHS also applied battlefield medicine to the streets. The ambulance service is separate from the fire service. All British ambulance crews get a college degree in emergency medicine. American paramedics basically scoop and transport.

@roselundgren4898 is called Penthrox. And apparently the FDA banned it in the US because of renal toxicity and cost. (I'd bet it was more about cost.)

With a sepsis patient, why not do IV antibiotics instead of oral? IV can get in there quicker and get started hitting that infection harder. Maybe that’s just my opinion.
