I went to high school with a man a year ahead of me. I was impressed when he got a job as a teller at a bank nearby. I'd see him every time I went to the drive-through. A few years later there was an article in the newspaper that he had been arrested for embezzlement. He threw away his job, career, reputation, freedom and girlfriend for $2000.

As a former bank auditor, I can't see how she got away with it for so long! Either internal auditors, external auditors or management should be doing random cash counts periodically. Because @Papi Chulo any "winnings" become a logical excuse for her spending large amounts of cash she "shouldn't" have. I.E., Steve: "Hey Andy where'd you get that new motorcycle?" Andy: "Oh I got lucky at the casino last weekend and decided to treat myself." Here in DC a group of officers for the Metrorail System were arrested for embezzling about 10 mil over 4 years. They would steal thousands a day and then go buy scratch off lottery tickets and/or go on weekend casino trips with the stolen money. That way to anyone paying attention to the new corvettes they were driving or the new fur the wife was wearing it didn't seem it of the ordinary. They were just "lucky". It's actually a smart and elegant way to keep their money from the skim looking legit thereby keeping others from asking questions.

I worked for almost 9 yrs at a bank. The daily procedures are critical to preventing employee theft. There could have been a weakness in the system that she took advantage of or other employees around her failed to follow anti-theft procedures. It is particularly challenging to work in the space of trusting but also NOT trusting your co-workers. She found a way to game the system. However, it’s never worth it. Embezzlers always get caught & theft from a bank is federal time. No parole. Felony. Not worth it!!!!!

recently finished reading "flawless: inside the largest diamond heist in history" and the book talks about how the number one thing organised thieves look for is instances where proper procedure isnt being followed. Always ask for receipts, if depositing cash into an account. Once I had to produce a receipt, and the manager said "Oh that explains the extra $100 that didn't line up with our drawer records for that day". Point is, a teller could have pocketed the cash, if they had seen me throw the receipt in the trash.
