For a store with most of its items priced at under $50.00, the manager should have caught these fraudulent returns early on. Eight refunds in a single month totaling over 500k should have raised a red flag by whoever was looking at the sales reports and doing the deposits at the store. My guess is, more people were in on this elaborate scam.

This is not necessarily the case. I was a district manager at McDonald's in DC, and i caught someone doing the samething after year. I was brought up as replace and starting doing cash audits and P&L reviews when the numbers didn't add up. I was told it was systems error, but they didn't make sense. What's worst? I saw the mistake even before the accountant caught on to the issue.

@@reesee175 Good managers that know how to read profit and loss statements will often catch theft early on. I mean we are trained to look for it. As a business owner and as someone who has worked in management most of my life I would have caught this. These are very large refunds totaling more than what this store does in a single day of sales. I don’t know what program the store uses to reconcile their daily transactions but total sales and total refunds would show up at the end of the day when the store runs their reports and assuming the manager was the one doing the deposit they would have noticed a discrepancy that large. If this employee was doing smaller refunds under 100.00 over an extended period of time, it would have been harder to catch.

8 transactions for 540k= $67,500 per transaction. So that means the credit card companies of the customers were approving transactions for 67k at a costume jewelry store? And the people shopping at these stores have credit limits above 67k? Not to mention her own bank or cc not flagging deposits of 67k? This does not add up. @@3sons66 you can change the price of an item to anything in some POS systems so she most likely bought the item then, when doing the return, marked up the item to an insane number. She manipulated their apparently faulty POS system by fraudulently returning items market up to pocket money for herself. I guess for POS system that doesn’t settle daily (it almost never does) but monthly would be hard to catch thieves till month end closing because that’s when a store would know actual sales made $10,000 but $600,000 returns lol 😅 That’s why the store you worked at put a fail safe or preventative measure that you needed managers approval for all returns as most POS system clears transactions monthly.

Since no one seems to understand how this works... you can manually "force" a credit on to a debit/credit card. You basically create an item worth $67000, "buy it" for cash you dont put in the register because you don't have it, return the non-existent item, and credit it to a debit card, which is deposited from the stores account to your bank account. Had she not been greedy and structured it properly; used a prepaid debit card with a stolen identity, had an accomplice, etc, she could have done this in smaller amounts indefinitely. The store probably wouldn't even catch on. It's a huge flaw in the credit card processing industry that is easily exploitable and has been around for about 20 years.

I started a gofundme for this poor girl who obviously doesn't have her basic needs met. I remember when I got my first Rolls Royce for 8th grade graduation, even though it wasn't the color I wanted, I still was able to get from point A to point B. I never forgave my insensitive parents for the PTSD that I still suffer from to this very day!

@@redman5158 it's the classic refund scam. she ran up a a fake a refund using her own credit card (or her friends). it's the most common theft in the malls. people get arrested all the time for this. I've worked in GNC where someone did this (not on a such a large scale)
