Banks Peninsula is located just outside Christchurch and has some wonderful bays to explore with some great fishing, but 4WD tracks are limited out there. One little gem though, that can add some adventure into your beach combing weekend from Christchurch, is the Old Le bons track. This 4WD track climbs up from the inner harbor to the crater rim of the extinct volcano. From there you can grab some amazing views of the peninsula before dropping down into the local bays to find that perfect camp site. In the wet this track can get coated in mud, slippery rocks and narrow spots. In the Summer this trail can be a gentle off road adventure.

Great Track. Did it with my cousin in similar wet and sleety weather. Last sharp bend gave us trouble but with a bit of gas got through fine. Its a great track!

It is a cool we spot to escape the shore line for a change. Yeah! camera work can almost triple a tracks time haha hence why a little sceptical about finding another truck to join for trips. Worried they will get annoyed with all the waiting hahaha

Me and my boyfriend did this one! We went downhill though, definitely the wrong way to go but it was awesome anyway! First time out 4x4 and my truck got a mad dent on the side panel hahahaha!

Nice to know there are some fun tracks to explore on Banks Pen. My wife is a hill runner so I can drop her at the start! About to pick up a new Fortuner with Maxxis Razr ATs on 17s from stock so looking to try some local stuff. Might need to take a pruning saw with me to protect the paint eh!

There is another track local to the banks peninsula, not far from the Old Lebons track but its pin-strip city haha so I don't recommend. You'll love the lifestyle a 4WD brings you in NZ though!

Was look at Topo maps for walking tracks & trying to find out if Old Le Bons was public access, i guess this answers that question ;)

Use Walking Access Maps they show the areas that are public. Just do a search for WAM mapping

@@akaroamale475 yeah have used them before but often end up having to jump over several electric fences and such which doesn't feel very friendly to the public and could imagine coming across agitated farmers

@@phillvallace Yep thats the problem, Farmers like to claim what is public land as their own. Take this track as a good example. One farmer gets really pissed when the public use it, its not theirs and its none of their business who uses it.

What kinda mods do you reakon you need for it? Just got a wee swb prado with 31s at the moment would be keen to give it a go if I knew what I was doing!

I would be happy and confident to tackle this in my surf solo on 32" muds. During the dryer seasons I can't see why a swb Prado wouldn't have a problem with the trail.

Done today with a stock surf on 31’s, definitely needed some help on the slippery parts round some big rocks, but doable

Track itself could be done In like 30mins on a god day. Allow 1.5 hour return to Akaroa I’d say.

@Lost Sheep Adventures Is this track available for a factory VW Touareg? What do you reckon?

Depends your history with 4 wheel driving. If its the first outing with the Touareg I would recommend Loch Katrine or similar. I would be confident my Surf would get through Old lebons on 32" muds easily in the dry though.

If I had a way to air up against once I’m back on the seal I might’ve. Once I get a compressor I will air down for most off-road trips, if not even just a comfort thing over traction.

@@lostsheepadventures Ive seen in later videos you air down, what compressor did you end up picking up? im on the west coast and do some beach driving so in the market for a reasonable compressor.

Hey @@MrBigbobsbeans, I Run a ARB high output compressor. Comes complete in carry case and all. Isn't required to be mounted and hard wired which makes for easy storage and removal. Does the job nicely, only compressor I've ever owned so can't compare but do highly recommend.

They are BF Goodrich KM2s. Believe the newer model is now KM3s

At the moment I'm running BFG KM2 33/10.5R15 But plan to move to Maxxis or Cooper once they need replacing

Truck came on them. Speaking with a mate though he reckons stay with the 10.5 due to the light weight of the Jeep they will bag out a lot easier at lower pressures vs the 12.5.

@@lostsheepadventures Yes, there are pros and cons, im buying some BFGs next week but cant decide haha. Which Maxxis are you looking at? I think i would try Coopers first, Ive had the Maxxis 764s, they are ok.

After some chatting and seeing some trucks running them I’m moving more towards the next set being Mickey T’s MTZ p3 or ATZ p3. Coppers are still a great tyre from what I hear though.

You may have possibly missed the turn off? There is a small track along the road sign posted "old Le Bons track"

Lost Sheep Adventures clearly, lol I’ve just got into 4WD and have been following your advice on KZfaq & wikiloc for day trips. I’m new to chch and have been doing solo missions. I have just done my mods so am ready for more fun... would love to go on a mission with you one day if you are still local, I have joined a club but they don’t go every weekend. Would Be keen to try Worsleys rd :-)

Only illegal if the cop who pulls you over is picky on the day. I love my stinker even though it’s not as aggressive as yours. The ruling is it can protrude over the bonnet height, no more than 20 degrees and there a calc for the amount of profusion (lol I forget)
