My dad rode in the 30's 40's and 50's. When I started riding many years ago he sat me down and looked into my eyes to make sure I was listening. He told me that one day I would know, without a doubt that I was in complete control of my motorcycle and that I couldn't possibly go down. He then changed his look and said "on that day get off and don't get back on until you change that thought." He said I would never be in complete control and that I had zero control of those around me. Smart man!

If you're not in complete control of your motorcycle, get more training, practice in a parking lot, or stop riding or something. That is an unsafe situation.

You know it is a funny thing, sometimes I have a plan for a video well in advance, sometimes the thoughts start to formalize over the weekend and on Monday I start to jot down ideas. Sometimes I am pretty confident about the subject matter and sometimes I am not. This was a video I was not confident in prepping for. Usually, when I am struggling with a message I run it by my wife, she is a good sounding board and I trust her judgment. I have had several other videos that I struggled with the prep for and all of them have had the biggest impact upon the listeners. One of those was the video telling the story of my eye injury. I wrote, shot and edited that in one day. Once I was finished I asked my wife and girls to watch it with me before I decided if I would upload it. They gave an enthusiastic thumbs up and I still was not sure, but I hit the publish button and went to bed. That video continues to resonate with viewers 2 years later and God has blessed it. At this point in MCrider, I have come to recognize that struggle and accept it. Because I know that the struggle causes me to step back and God to step through. It is my prayer that this message resonates with those who need to hear it. I know I will get some flack from unbelievers in the KZfaq comment section, I know I will get some flack from the wheelie crowd, etc. All of that just rolls off my back. What I am concerned with is being obedient to God and not letting myself get in the way. KZfaq is a funny business. Some creators get 1,000 subscribers and they want 10,000. 10,000 leads to 50,000 and so on. Sometimes I forget how many people watch these videos and the reach that it has. Then I meet a real person who follows MCrider. Our paths cross at the motorcycle show or somewhere in town and I put a face to one of the numbers that KZfaq uses to measure success. The faces that I have met resonate so much more with me than the numbers and it causes me to check myself and my motives. So I will continue to speak my heart. I will try to tell the truth as I see it, always giving room that I may be wrong or don't see the complete picture. When it comes to sharing my faith, if it bothers you, you will just have to deal with it, it is who I am and I would not be honest with you if it was not a part of my story on MCrider. But, in the end, it is the love of motorcycling and for me, obedience to God, that draws this thing together. Thanks for being a part of it. See you on the road, Kevin

Hey there, Kevin, I'm not religious in any way, and have my doubts that there is any sort of divine entity at all. I get road rage in a car. I drive fast. Never had an accident. Everyone told me i should not get a bike because of my road rage. I'm a new rider. Once i got in the bike, my road rage disappeared. A video on mc rider i watched the day i got my bike changed my mindset. It said, cars are the predator and motorcycles are the prey. That simple statement has kept me cool headed in the worst situations with aggressive car drivers. No need to get worked up, rather get it off the danger zone and go about your day.

Same situation with me, I had 3 motorcycles in my 20"s, wrecked the last one when I was 29 years old. Excessive speed and lack of road strategy contributed to that crash. I called it quits after that because I now had a family and the beginnings of my career, so very limited time for motorcycles after that. I got my next bike at age 66, now retired, and I now have two bikes at age 67. I am much wiser now, and totally believe in training, riding skills, and road strategy, hence my desire for supporting MCrider. I truly enjoy riding much more now, so much more than I ever did when young, and do not need the "excessive speed thrill" any more. I love just cruising around, sober, and alert, just enjoying the road, and the scenery. Like Kevin said, there is just nothing quite like it! Ride safe.

When I first started riding, I watched several of "those" KZfaqrs. But as I learned proper street riding skills, I realized they were not displaying their skills, but were poor riders themselves. I continued watching them for a while to observe what they were doing wrong, and then stopped watching them at all. Now I only watch what the safe riders do (like Kevin) and learn from them.

I know a lot of us are rejoining the riding ranks, and we are some of the most prone to having an accident. So, these videos are invaluable to help us be able to ride without early funerals and not scaring our wives to death. “....you should take the bus.” I choked on my coffee. 😂 Seriously, though. I saw myself in one of your examples. I took the basic rider course to get my endorsement, on a 250cc Honda. From there, I practiced in a parking lot on our 1450cc Ultra Limited. That was tough. From there, bought my Road King. I was hell bent on skipping the “starter bike”. I don’t ever recommend other new riders to follow my example. I felt I could handle it only because 1. I’m surrounded by skilled riders that would never allow me to develop bad or dangerous habits and 2. I have enough self discipline to have practiced a ton before allowing myself street time. There’s no need to rush through the process and put myself in danger prematurely.

My first bike was a '79 shovelhead harley. I don't recommend that to be anyone's first bike lol. But, like you, with discipline and a level headed group of riders around you it can be done. I have always recommended new riders after me to go for a good reliable starter bike for awhile.

I'm in my mid 40s , finally got my permit last year. I've ridden dirt for years , and who hasn't taken a buddy's bike around the block ? I know I don't know squat and the road was a little spooky at first. Even having to stop and go from a stop sign required more attention than I thought . I'm riding a borrowed Yamaha wr 250 from Dad and he's got a ktm rc390. He used to race with his brothers , so as far as learning control I've learned alot from them. I don't know it all and realize I have a long way to go as far as the basics of street riding. Haha sometimes it feels odd because this is a dual purpose bike and I feel like I have to run somewhere. That comes from the dirt , where you have to pop out on a road for a little stretch to get to the next trail and don't wanna get in trouble. 😅

I took my rider training on a 250cc Yamaha. There was a petite little 16-year-old girl in the class, doing everything perfectly. Turns out she had been riding with her parents for a couple of years under her learners permit. After we all passed the test, her parents came on two big Harleys, the mom got on behind the dad on one, and the girl got on the other, and off they went. She had been well-trained. Thank you, Kevin, for this sage advice. I have been riding for 50 years and the two times I went sailing off my bike through the air were caused by drivers of cars who were absolutely at fault. And as I lay in the road and they stood over me apologizing I was completely aware that (a) I had been smart to buy a very good helmet and (b) the accidents were completely avoidable had I used more awareness. Always be aware that 'cars are the predators and motorcycles are the prey'.

Yammie was taking the turn on the inside, oncoming lane... from my perspective. He has a 'Busa' now and 'seems' a tiny bit more reserved. Few, like 'Yammie', ever receive a second chance to live. Many more are never able to walk, eat solid food, let alone ride. God has a plan for Yammie. Not sure what it is at this point, but he most definetly has some future purpose.

What an inspiring and motivating video. I’m 64 , live in Spain, and my very first bike is a Honda PCX 125. I love it and honestly don’t want a bigger bike. Some will laugh at that, but, for me it gives me the pleasure I thought I would never have as used to be scared to ride a bike. Now with Kev’s help and videos, I think I am doing well on road craft and it is only thanks to his instruction and videos that I’ve progressed quicker than I thought I would. Kev, thank you and please never stop....

I’m blessed to live in LA with great weather and can lane split to get thru traffic (mostly freeway but non freeways too), I see some guys driving way too fast, incl when lane splitting, they would rather be cool, would rather reduce their chance of being seen by wearing dark colors. As a former truck driver here’s my rules: Speed mngmnt (can’t be in a big hurry),space mngmnt (the space all around you, especially ahead of you, look far enough ahead of you and not just at the car ahead of you, leave enough space to be able to stop or give yourself an out), visual search (keep you eyes moving incl checking your mirrors), communication (be seen, wear bright clothing, stay out of blind spots, use your horn, never assume you think you know what the other guy is gonna do). Practice makes perfect. Stay within your comfort zone, don’t take risks. No distractions (fiddle farting with radio or music or phone). I like your “image of God” wisdom Kevin. Gods love is in us, it’s up to us to share it!

Good one Kev, you have summarised perfectly some major groups of riders there who i see out on their bikes as soon as the weathers good. I applaud yourself and others such as The Rider Guider in Australia who are doing great things to help keep motorcyclists safe by showing all the hints of what to look for and where and when to look, it's just a case of getting the message across to those that need it. I know what you meant about the way riding a motorcycle is sort of a spiritual thing, it is a really great feeling and i feel lucky that i have spent now 41 years riding and being in awe at the worlds creation and to be a part of it. Keep up the good work. With regards from the UK.

I would hate to put up a name and be wrong, worse yet, to have it give some kind of negative check against MCRider/Kevin. I think he is a great guy and offers great advise every post. I have been riding a few years longer than he is old and have never heard him give advice that I disagreed with. I would hate to get him in trouble. It would be easy enough for you to look up on the net. Look up KZfaqr that crashed two Triumph Daytona's in one year and you will likely see who I believe it is. The guy has no shame or compassion for anyone but himself, not even the people he hit that he could have just as easily killed. Y'all ride safe.

Great stuff Kevin. Thanks for bringing this info. One thing I found out along time ago and you mentioned it in the video. Just about anyone can twist the throttle and go fast in a straight line. However, it takes control and self discipline to ride slow. My sones are starting to get into bikes and so as part of their training I took them to a parking lot and we had "slow races". They initially thought it was dumb but once they saw the amount of control you had to have to ride slow they quickly realized the ole man knew a thing or two. Keep up the good work. Ride safe!

But anyway, I think in order to become old and wise, You first must survive being young & dumb, The good Lord has shown a lot of mercy to me over the years.
